Scene 0 - The Arrival

#1 Post by mithrandir138 »

You ride into Luxor on the tail of a storm. Lightning traces streak across the starless sky, illuminating every cracked street and dusty alley – even the mortuary temple of Ramesses the III – in unforgiving clarity, before retuning the city to darkness.

You strive to make out the Chicago House through the plane’s oil-streaked windows, but it is lost somewhere in the warrens of crumbling stucco shops and stacked tenements that sprawl across the city like shards of dusty pottery.

The plane skids to a stop atop the broken and rutted runway just as the first drops of rain begin to fall.

You notice a bright spot light coming from outside the plane, and it seems to be searching the windows of the plane as it is still moving, and as you look out the windows you see three Luxor police cars waiting on the runway. At the end of the runway, by the terminal, is a fourth car, with a chauffer standing outside of the car with an umbrella. Fortunately, he doesn't seem to be harassed by the policemen, as they are all concerned with the plane now that it has landed and is taxiing towards them.

As the plane comes to a stop, five policemen surround the plane.

The co-pilot appears at the front of the plane he addresses the passengers with a raised voice so you can hear him over the sounds of the plane engines spinning down. He states that he has heard over the radio that the police were here to talk with the group heading to something called the "Chicago House". He shrugs and shakes his head as if he doesn't know what that is or why the police would want to have anything to do with the investigators. As he turns back to the cockpit, he shouts over his shoulder:

"I don't want any trouble, here. It's hell trying to charter flights around here as it is! The last thing my company needs is more paperwork and bribes!"

A small Egyptian man runs to the plane pushing with a small set of rickety wooden steps on wheels. He places them at the bottom of the small door on the side of the plane, scales them, and pulls open the door, and runs back down the stairs and heads to the other side of the plane (around the back).

The policemen line up near the door of the plane and are shining lights into the windows of the plane.

What do you do?

Handouts attached inline below for flavor and exposition. No need to explain how you got them or anything. Your backgrounds pretty much take care of why you are here. Since this is your first "move" for most of you in a CoC game, make sure to make use of the strategy thread and discuss/ask questions. I will help all I can, my goal is not to kill you, but I don't want to put you "on rails" either and lead you through the story. You will have consequences to your actions, but I will make an effort to be as fair and helpful as possible. Good luck (you're gonna need it.) I don't normally do this, but If you guys die too soon or something tragic and game stopping happens, we may talk about "replaying" a scene from the beginning to make sure everyone has a good time and a good first CoC experience.

Amelia Hall watches the police as they swarm around the plane. Better hold off doing anything rash, she thinks to herself as she watches the reactions of the plane's other passengers.

"Well it seems Dr. Bollacher has sent us a welcoming committee," says Professor Clarke, rising from his seat, lit pipe in hand, and putting on his somewhat worn jacket. As you'd expect, it has patches on the sleeves. He is the very picture of a dowdy college academician. "I'll wager they're here to escort us to the Chicago House. Quite thoughtful." He begins moving to the door of the plane.

Utterly domestic and routine, Professor Clarke has never even been in a plane before, much less one this stunningly modern. He's a bit out of his element, but you get the idea he'd be out of his element anywhere except for in a classroom or library. He digs in his pocket and pulls out a luggage receipt, holding it in front of him. "Now... where do we collect our luggage?"

After having engaged in some mild small talk during the flight, Jacob looks out and is unimpressed with seeing the police cars. "Great," he thinks, "They're probably just like the ones back one."

Turning to the Professor Jacob tells him, "I don't think they're here to escort us. However, I know I've barely been in this country for a day and haven't broken any laws that I'm aware of. I'll just ask them what the problem is when we get off the plane." As Jacob grabs his luggage and exits the plane, he'll turn to the pilot, "Thanks" and flip him a quarter.

Seeing the other passengers collect their things and begin to exit the plane, Amelia does the same.

"Oh," says Professor Clarke, slightly surprised and a bit confused. He leans over to try to get a better look out the window. "What do you think they want?... Well we can't just stay on the plane, can we? I guess we'd better see what's the matter... I'm sure everything will be fine." He clutches a briefcase pick up from his seat and begins making his way to the door."What did you say you do again? The name's Clarke. I'm a professor of archeology at the University of Chicago. Pleased to meet you, ah..."

Jacob extends his hand to the professor. "I'm Jacob Hosking, a private investigator from back in the states."

Jacob muses, I wish we had more time for this on the plane and ship but the contraptions are just so loud it's sometimes hard to hear yourself speak

Once Jacob gathers his belongs, he will exit the plane and look around and almost wait for the police to come to him. He'll feel around for his cigarettes and dig for his matches before trying to light one and look up a the sky as he exhales.

"Well, I'm still not quite sure what this Chicago House is all about but Rose is one of my best friends and I intend to do everything in my power to help her out. I just pray that the police presence does not bode ill for Rose...or us."

Latanya gathers her bags and quickly squeezes her way to the front of the plane. She exits in a rush and approaches the nearest policeman, "I was to meet Rose Bollacher here. Where is she? Has something happened to her?"

Professor Clarke exits the plane with the others, staying very near the group, like a tourist on a guided tour. He looks around at the foreign scene wonderingly, with a tinge of nervousness. He smiles politely at the nearest policeman. "Chicago House?" He says, a bit too loudly, gesturing with his hands in the shape of a house, as if this will help communicate his meaning.

Amelia

Amelia starts down the stairs, following the other passengers. Weary about being surrounded by cops in a foreign land, she decides to find out a little more of what's going on. She decides to fast talk one of the officers to try and find out why they are here.
