Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Berry manages to shrug off his pack, but before he can dig out a torch, the huge spider lunges down the lattice of webwork, advancing with disturbing celerity.
There's not really a viable way to put my plans into a sealed envelope. You'll have to trust that I want you to win, but would find coddling you to be boring.
So, depending on the conflict, I've already chosen my actions and my weapon. Feel free to do your thing.
As for Order of Might, I'm not sure that's something you get for free. You might go in, trying to capture it, only to find out too late that you can't. Today is a freebie, though. Order of Might: 4

Aoife steps to the front of the group, checking her helmet is securely fitted.
Arms up lads, this one's live!
She raises her warhammer, ready to strike.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Berry tries to avoid killing at all costs if possible as it flies in the face of his ideals.
So I vote for a drive off. And maybe put me in round 2 of the conflict.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Not the easiest doing this on a tiny droid phone
Spiders aren't inherently evil, so I don't think it triggers my belief, but I do agree that if we camp we have to kill it.
I'm happy to wade on in, although I wish I had some armour more than just bracers.
Hai! Spider! You've bitten off more then ye can chew!
I dropped my pack and stick outside and drew my sword, so I'm ready.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Okay, here's the proposal - please check my math and weigh in on the idea.Ludanto wrote:Also consider, with regard to Kill conflicts, are you willing to die to get rid of this spider?
It's also more dangerous than you are. Order of Might 4 means it hits harder, maneuvers better and recovers faster than you.
This should be a feasible combat - I was going to suggest we try for a kill conflict, but with Ludanto's point above, I don't think we're willing to die to get rid of this spider. So, lets do a Drive off.
Drive off: Attack and Feint use Fighter, Defend and Maneuver use Will. That means everyone has something to offer; we can all participate effectively.
I suggest:
We appoint Aiofe leader for the fight. She rolls disposition: Fighter 4D +5D Help +1D Fresh = 10D +5 Health.
We then have the first three actions. I think the Spider is telegraphing its intent to attack, so we open with a Defend and then counter with two attacks of our own. We come out strong and see if we can end it in the first turn.
Action 1: Defend - Allric with B6 Will +1D Fresh +5D Help (the wizard dazzles it with his lights intimidates it; what stats for lights as the weapon?)
Action 2: Attack - Thag with Fighter 3 +1D Fresh +1D sword +4D help
Attack 3: Attack - Aiofe with Fighter 4 +1D Fresh +1D warhammer +4D help
Next turn it would go to Berry, Beren and Rabon if this round doesn't finish it off. Note that there's 5D help on the Defense but only 4D help on Fighter because Allric doesn't have a fighter skill to help with. If Allric steps out, then we can get Thag or Aiofe to repeat an attack at the end of the second turn, but we have 4D Help on the disposition.
Thoughts? If everyone weighs in, then I'll leave it to Aiofe as this Fight's Captain to decide final order.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Then I suppose we can do this thing,
I like the set up. I can lead with defense in my action, since my will is good and also defender trait.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Cool, I'll roll for disposition then!
[1d6] = 6, [1d6] = 1, [1d6] = 3, [1d6] = 2, [1d6] = 2
[1d6] = 3, [1d6] = 2, [1d6] = 4, [1d6] = 5, [1d6] = 3
Oof, not great - only three successes! So our disposition is 8.

jhrrsn, there are 6 of you. Who get the extra two Hit Points?
Marullus, as for lights as a weapon, +1s to Maneuver, but only if at least one orb isn't being used for light.

I'd say Thag & Aoife are probably best off getting the extra points!

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
jhrrsn, what's the final lay out for the first three moves? Do you want Allric to do the first defense (B6)
or Berry (B5, Defender Trait)?
Are the other two moves good as proposed?
Ludento, after he posts the three moves, can you reveal move 1?

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
As soon as you guys are ready.
Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Yeah, I'm happy with the order suggested (Allric leading). Let's go!

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Maneuver, Nature 5, +2D Spider Legs!
Spiderman Euver(1/2):5,6,2,3,1
Spider Maneuver(2/2):2,3
2 Successes!
The spider suddenly changes course, running up the side of the wall as it tries to get behind you and block your retreat!

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
The wizard stands before the spider, hemming it's every move with the floating Motes. He thinks hard, trying to out think his adversary and predict each pathway despite the spider's alien thought processes, sending the group's hammers, swords, and poles to head off it's long-legged maneuvers. With a dramatic flourish, he causes the light motes to flare and slams his staff on the ground, yelling at the beast in his most imposing voice: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"
6D Will +1D Fresh +5D Help -1D Thoughtful = 11D,
plus one check earned.
Allric Defend (1/3) [1d6] = 1 [1d6] = 2 [1d6] = 4 [1d6] = 3

5 Successes. Margin of Success = 3. Disposition 8+3=11.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Don't get too excited. Disposition can't go higher than it started (8).
Feint, Nature 5, Spider Legs +1D
Feint fails! Lay into it!
The spider waggles its forelegs again at Thag, shifting first left and then right in unpredictable crab-steps, and then lunging at him, testing him for weaknesses.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
This is the first time I've done a conflict, so correct my math.
Fighter skill = 3D, Fresh +1D, Sword +1D to one type of action (I choose Attack), +4D from help
So 9D to roll
Attack vs Feint is an Independent test, so all my successes come straight off it's Disposition.
If I use my Grim-Visage trait against me to take a -1D penalty I can earn a check so we would be able to camp. Taking it now makes sense since it can't hurt us.
So final test will be 8D
If possible I move to get between it and the stairs, to chase it towards the door, poking it's hideous bloated posterior with the tip of my long sword.
Drive it toward the door my friends - Rabon, Allric, get ready to close the door after it flees. With a hearty laugh, Chase it away, friends, it's not worth eating.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Thag's word slashes the hideous thing, scratching a wound into its chitinous hide! It's screams a weird, clicky scream and tumbles across the floor from the blow! Then, suddenly it is up on all eight, hairy limbs again, and leaps bodily upon Aoife!
ATTACK!, Nature 5
Spider Attack!: 6, 1, 3, 2, 3
Bah! 1 Success! At least it wasn't a bite!
Aoife loses a hit point, but she's still up.

Re: Session 1: The Dwarven Monastery
Can I roll for my leather armour to resist the damage? I'll roll here, let me know if that's not right. Otherwise I've got my helmet, which I'll use to remove 1s.
Armour
[1d6] = 2
(Needed a 4+, so I'll use my helmet).
Okay, I'm also going to use a trait against myself - Scarred. So 9 dice; 4 Fighter, 1 Hammer, 4 Help, 1 Fresh, -1 Scarred.
Attack
[1d6] = 4, [1d6] = 5, [1d6] = 1, [1d6] = 6, [1d6] = 6
[1d6] = 4, [1d6] = 3, [1d6] = 5, [1d6] = 6
Hoof! That's more like it! 7 successes.
Aoife struggles against the beast's writhing mass as it tries to pin her down. As her movement becomes increasingly constrained, she begins to panic... Suddenly, visions of Hollifort come racing back to her - how powerless she felt as the guards took her family away, and the tight ropes and manacles clasped around her young body.
From beneath the spider, you hear a low, growling scream that builds into a bloody rage as Aoife throws the beast off her and lays into it with her hammer, striking over and over as her friends take shots where they can.
Having made some space, she stands - grinning wildly.
