The Rushmoors, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Nine. Early morning. Monday, October 24th, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, foggy

Image

Glistening green death rises from these forsaken marshes, come to kill the heroes of Briarsgate.

"There are too many of them. We should fall back before they flank us," Hoom counsels as calmly as he can manage.

Pip retreats to Urdur's side as he feels the living ooze eating through his shirt! An eerie, wet chill touches his flesh!

Image

Wanting to burn it off Pip, Urdur opens his waterlogged pack and finds his torches soaking wet.
"Gods damn it," says Mouser as he pulls a torch from his pack and gets it alight. He holds it between Hoom, Urdur and Pip, staring with alarm at the horrendous translucent mire wriggling upon Pip's chest. "One of you do it!"

Ten feet away, Grothnak unflinchingly fires two more arrows. They sink to the feathers into a rotten chest, both impaling an unbeating heart. (Z4) But the dire corpse doesn't stop.

Long Bo weaves another incantation, bringing the power of nature to bear against the unnatural. Moments later, four wretched carrion are ensnared by the druid's living prison of writhing, grasping flora! (S7, S8, Z7, Z8) They join the ghoulish chorus of dead men whose screams echo across the silent bog.

Telkis mercifully shatters the horrific remains of Avril's dead father with a fell handed morningstar strike. (S1)

"Thank you, Telkis... For doing what I could not." Avril says. She reaches for her father's ring but hesitates. She dares not touch the crawling green that coats the lifeless bones of her beloved parent, even as they are swallowed up by the dark swamp water. Avril grabs her hand to stop it from probing those black depths.

The slime finds purchase upon the end of Cranach, and Telkis looks for higher ground. 15 feet behind him, a tree rises from the water. 45 feet to the southeast, a fallen log. (see map)

Ingrid's iron mace misses a noxious living skeleton (S2) and her right foot gets stuck in the thick slimy mud beneath the icy water. (Fumble: Take no movement next round)

Brevos' green tainted blade whistles between the broken ribs of a grisly carcass as the ranger retreats another 15 feet.

Noble Pelias tries to drive back the vile hellions with the holy might of Heironeous and finds to his horror he has no power over them in this place of absolute evil!

Suddenly the emerald infestation of hateful undead turns as one and glares with bottomless malice at Ingrid Esthof.

Image

And then they lunge for her.

A pair of ghastly green cadavers (S4, S6) lacerate and bludgeon Brevos who blocks their path to Ingrid, grievously wounding him! (-10hp)

Two more heinous revenants fighting to reach Ingrid (S9, Z9), try to claw their way through Grothnak. One draws blood from the half-orc's side (-5hp), transferring some of the unnerving viridian slime onto Grothnak's armor!

Another verdant dead man (S2) labors to carve a path through Pelias to Ingrid's flank but the paladin's shield turns back those murderous talons.

A trio of revolting slimy carcasses breaks through and reaches Ingrid (S10, Z4, Z10) but none can breach her defenses nor lay a grasping dead hand upon her pale throat.

Bo knows that his magic wont hold these monsters forever. He also knows that backing away from the fight will likely get others killed.

He moves forward, skirting the first circle of ensnared undead to the east, and behind those already engaged in trying to kill Ingrid. He keeps his eyes and ears sharp for any more approaching monsters as he tries to get behind Brevos. He can only hope that he can get to the injured man before he falls.

He spins his spear around in his hands as he approaches, now clutching it more like a staff. He knows all too well that trying to poke a spear tip at a set of bones is not exactly the most prudent way to fight them.

He watches the actions as he draws near, wondering if he should help fight or try to heal the ranger instead.

"Stay alert everyone! It seems that these things can pop up around us at any time! I am coming up behind you, Brevos!"

Ingrid Esthof

Swinging her mace at the nearest threat (S10), the cleric only makes a half-hearted attempt as she momentarily panics and focuses her efforts at extracting her foot from the swamp floor. I'm stuck! she exclaims, ripping her foot free of the muck, grateful her boots are tied on securely.

The Rushmoors, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Nine. Early morning. Monday, October 24th, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, foggy

The quagmired heroes fight for their lives against the heinous necromancy of the forsaken swamp.

Grothnak and Pelias drive back another savage assault with scimitar and shield, but Ingrid is wounded by a nightmarish, grinning skeleton (S10) that claws murderously at her gut. (-5hp)

In a bloodcurdling attack, two macabre green cadavers (S4, S6) mercilessly butcher Brevos in a ghastly spray of crimson. (-10hp)

The valiant young ranger succumbs to his wounds, slowly slipping beneath the green coated waterline, out of sight!

Image

Long Bo sludges through festering water and mud, trying to reach Brevos in time to heal him without being hacked apart by friendly blades. Avril follows in his wake but the pair of healers find only two vile skeletons where Brevos had been! Bony talons wet and red with fresh blood, they leer over a rippling, bubbling grave of dark water. Ten feet to the west, carrion men strangled by living plants shriek with hellish ferocity.

Her soul filled with bitter malice at the discovery of her father's fate, Avril draws the sword her father had given her, swings it within an eyelash length of an odious skull and says through clenched teeth. "Bo, please aid noble Brevos while I handle these two fiends. Go now. I'll cover you."

Behind the lines, Hoom heeds his own advice and retreats from the terrifying wave of grisly corpses.

Water soaking his beard, Urdur Shimmerstone grabs Mouser's torch and holds it up near Pip's writhing green chest. Mouser wants to close his eyes. Instead he opens them wider. At the flame's proximity, the horrific miasma lets go, disappearing into the dark opaque waters with a dull splash.

Pip's shirt had been eaten through and his red flesh blisters and stings, but there seems no lasting damage. Urdur readies a flask of oil from his sodden pack.

Mouser hands Pip an unlit torch and flint, just in case. Then he suddenly cries, "Ingrid!" seeing the brave priestess faltering, besieged on all sides. Mouser bares steel and charges the back of one grotesque revenent with two blades (Z10), sinking Cat's Claw to the hilt between the shoulder blades. The undead thing howls and turns and Mouser wonders what he's just gotten himself into. Mouser dodges the dead man's hands and yelps to Urdur, Pip and Hoom, "Help!"

Between the water and the slippery mud beneath it, neither Grothnak, Ingrid, Pelias nor Telkis can land a blow upon their horrific, would-be murderers! Grothnak repels another fell attack with curved steel. (Z9)

Then one graveyard killer (Z4) brutally bludgeons Ingrid Esthof into unconsciousness. (-7hp) She too slips below the waterline into the evil swamp's waiting embrace.

Grothnak has only a second to decide what to do. Continue fighting zombies and skeletons, or help Ingrid? He chances a glance where the priestess sinks into the muck, dying and drowning. But the three monsters in front of him make up his mind: he must send the dead back to their graves while others help the wounded.

"Pip!" he barks as he swings his scimitar again. "Help Ingrid!"

Hoom having retreated to the rear of the group for safety, he hears the call for help from his comrade Mouser. Knowing that he still owes Mouser a debt of gratitude for not abandoning him in the cold dark dungeon below the temple, he moves back into danger to replay that debt. He moves swiftly to Mouser drawing his short sword along the way, before stopping next to him on his comrades right side.

A very concerned Bo chances one quick glance back at the group behind him, noticing clearly some members unwillingness to help out, further raising the druids suspicions about certain members of the current group.

Appreciative that the women in the party have a little more nerve for such things, he heeds the command of Avril, happy to have her protection by his side. Bo grabs at the sinking ranger in front of him, knowing full well that someone has to do some fighting in order for the group to succeed. As he reaches in with his hands to pull the man back above the waterline, he intones the words of a healing prayer to his god, hoping that it is enough to bring Brevos back to the world of the living.

"Die!"

Knowing where his talents are best applied, Telkis stays put and swings again at the nearest undead menace, determined to keep it up until he and his friends can retreat to safety: He'll keep an eye on the slime on his morningstar, and avoid letting it slip down onto his hand if he can.

The Rushmoors, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Nine. Early morning. Monday, October 24th, 576 CY

Image

In the accursed marsh of unnameable evil, two heroes descend into watery graves.

Avril valiantly buys time for Bo, that he might pull one of them back to the land of the living. The priestess draws the attacks of two green skeletal horrors (S4, S6) whose assault cuts her open (-3hp) and transfers two terrifying amoebic things onto her leather armor! She doesn't falter.

Telkis and Pelias repel bony claws that seek to disembowel them (S2, S10). A third fleshless nightmare (S9) hacks open Grothnak's neck (-5hp). Its green ooze joins with the writhing slime on the half-orc's armor, forming one large, frightful alien colony across his torso.

Long Bo heaves Brevos from the dark water, dragging him back as he utters prayers of healing (+6hp).
Brevos awakens, soaking wet and with a death grip on his sword. Its blade is as green and rippling as his armor's breastplate.

Pip pulls Ingrid and her mace from the water, saving her from drowning to death. Urdur hands his lit torch to Hoom and binds Ingrid's wounds before her lifeblood slips away. Horrifically, a thick emerald muck coats the left arm of her mail. The monk of Hochoch sees a twisted black tree emerging from the swamp behind him, but no other dry area.

Water at his chest, Telkis shatters a skull; pulverizing bone to dust with a slime-covered Cranach. (S2)

Hoom reaches Mouser's right side. "Grey what are you doing? This is crazy!..."

"I know. But Ingrid was in trouble. I must be getting soft. Stab this thing already, will you?!" Mouser replies over his shoulder as he skewers a fearsome, wounded cadaver, running it through. (Z10) The thing falls, and as 'Scalpel' is unsheathed from its dead flesh, the blade is green and quivering. "Never mind. Damn it. Where's that torch?"

Avril cuts wide, unnerved by the crawling viridian horror working its way to her skin.

Grothnak's scimitar cleaves open a corpse riddled with the half-orc's arrows (Z4), killing it. Grothnak narrowly evades another gruesome carcass (Z9), aided by his new ring.

The gleam of steel in Pelias' hand shears a leering skull from a spine. (S10) The blade returns green and pulsating.

The desperate, life and death struggle in deep mud and two feet of water rages on while nearby, ten dead men, bound tight by weeds and roots, howl and screech into the silent, primordial swamp.
