Chapter 5: Amazons of the Apocalypse

Chapter 5: Amazons of the Apocalypse

Realm of the Warrior Maidens of Sekhmet. Third Tier of the Great Pyramid
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Two. Midmorning. 14th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

The explorers of the Great Pyramid emerge from the revolving corridor into the hall of The Spear. They soon stand before towering stone doors adorned with Sekhmet, ancient Verulian goddess of women and war.

Image

Gronda of Zembabwei meekly complies with Kiri's request to go first. Head down, the wounded savage girl softly approaches the ominous portal alone, as Attila of Hyrkanea nocks an arrow and moves behind her.

Suddenly the titanic twin doors open!

Image

Spears bristle in the breach, and so do the fierce, armored women that wield them.

Image

Through the spare opening, at least six golden spearbearers are visible and behind them, the ceilings of a vast, torchlit chamber (23).

One lion-helmed amazon barks, "Barbarians! Send forth the women. Only the women! We shall not harm them."

Actions?!

Loche quietly suggests to the party that Gronda be our 'leader' for this encounter and have all of us answer to Gronda:

Wid ye kerry oot oor leader? us lads wid stravaig aboot wi'oot purpose! We ur bit men 'n' need tae follow Granda!

He hopes the rest will think this is a good idea and continue this.

Roan, Son of Rune

Already uncomfortable with Gronda leading the way, the Vanir is protective of her when the maidens of the Spear bark their commands. He does not fear these women. Perhaps they can help.
"I am Roan, Son of Rune. I too follow the way of the Spear. Can you help our...leader? She is injured beyond our means of healing."

Gronda steps forward with pride, reveling in the sudden power shift. She is ready to play the part and does so with a certain glee, thinking long on her own past.

"I am forth! My name is Gronda! I am the only woman and I lead this group of barbarian dogs! We have come seeking help. And offer help in return. These men are my companions. What say you to that, sisters?"

At spearpoint, Gronda says, "I am the only woman and I lead this group of barbarian dogs! We have come seeking help. And offer help in return. These men are my companions. What say you to that, sisters?"

Unmoved and unmoving, the female warriors snarl over the thicket of spears. One answers, "We say enter, sister. Alone. Leave your dogs here. For we shall suffer no man.
"No harm shall befall you,"
she repeats, ready to close the doors. "Now kindly make haste."

Garrin nods at Gronda. He knows there is no honor in senseless violence. He will not fight these women unless they attack first, or harm his companion.

Arthfael wonders again: if the warrior women suffer no men, where do little warrior women come from? He knows enough of the ways of birds and bees to know that when the sexes do not...intermingle...the species does not last long. Odd, then, that these should survive.

He waits to find out whether it will become necessary to befriend or kill these women.

Gronda turns back to the men and shrugs her shoulders slightly. Raising her eyebrows, she says only one word before turning again and following the women warriors through the door.

"Stay!"

Roan, Son of Rune

The Vanir barbarian bristles at the tone of the spear maidens, and actually bares his teeth at Gronda's command. But, he holds his spear, hoping things work out for the best.
To Attila, Roan replies with a smirk, "They smell the musk of my groin. And they like it...even if they are too proud to admit it."

Day Two. Midmorning. 14th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Gronda steps forth toward the dense grove of spearheads.

Image

The fierce wall of shields and spears parts like the sea before a prophet, forming a path through the doorway for Gronda and Gronda alone. The savage ex-slave enters the passageway lined with deadly weapons, and then the stone doors shut tight behind her and are double barred.

Only the male explorers remain in the corridor. Moments pass in banter and then Arthfael, Kiri, Loche and Mako hear quick footsteps followed by the distant, deep scrape of stone upon stone. The sounds come from behind them, in the direction of the revolving corridor.

Actions?

Image

On the other side of the barred door, Gronda stands in a grand, ornate chamber lit by large braziers (23). Tall walls are adorned with ancient imagery of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet and of Verulian queens of old.

Image

Eight armored amazons are with her, one manning a spy hole in the door, and another departing in haste through a secret passage in the north wall.

The remaining steely-limbed women surround her. They slowly lower their spears, if not their guard. The only amazon to have spoken removes her golden lion helmet and regards the dark ex-slave of Zembabwei. Her eyes widen at Gronda's many scars.

In an accented Common different than that of the Sons of Osorus, the albino warrior-maiden gently speaks: “Who are you, sister? What has befallen you? And how have you come to doomed Khemsa?"

Loche turns to Roan, Son of Rune and nods his head towards the noise.

Weel noo. That's a bawherr troubling. Mibbie th' denizens o' this pyramid git a whiff o' that crotch o' yers 'n' they're sealing us in. Roan, son o' rune, mibbie ye shuid gang check that oot. Th' mair... Agreeable ones shuid bade behind juist in trial this is a trap.

Translation / Subtitle: Well now. That's a bit troubling. Maybe the denizens of this pyramid got a whiff of that crotch of yours and they are sealing us in. Roan, Son of Rune, maybe you should go check that out. The more... agreeable ones should stay behind just in case this is a trap.

Loche pauses for a moment and continues: Mibbie they'll be frightened by yer unwashed barbarian manhood 'n' gied the pitch.

Translation / Subtitle: Maybe they'll be frightened by your unwashed barbarian manhood and run away.

He smoothly and expertly glides two daggers out of their sheaths to be at the ready for anything and glares into the darkness behind them.

Staring at the curious pale skinned, angelic looking woman is mesmerizing and even slightly uncomfortable for the dark skinned Gronda. She answers the white haired amazon with no aggression showing in her voice or her stance. She doesn't try to hide her obvious differences from these women and displays her skin tone, scars, and tattoos without shame.

"I am simply called Gronda, for I know not my real name. I have no fancy titles or long surnames to share. I hail from the south, a place called Zembabwei. Do you know of it?"

"My group was guarding a caravan attempting to cross the great eastern desert when we were set upon by the deadly wind and sands. We survivors found ourselves completely lost and in total desperation when we luckily stumbled upon the ruins of you're lost pyramid. Truth be told, I am surprised to see that your kind has survived in here. And so have the many deadly creatures that we had to fight to get this far."

The savage woman looks around again at the many great hieroglyphs filling the walls, giving each of them much thought as she does so.

I would like to hear more about you and your purpose in this place. Why do you say that your......Khemsa...... is doomed?"
