Making a new thread - the old one corrupted, and keeps deleting any post after Alethan's.

Earc enchants two small river stones, one for Akkara and one for Achaedany, which they tie with leather thongs to make them easier to carry. Combined with Earc's driftwood and Blackjack's bracelet, the group is well-lit for their spelunking adventure. Only Olaf doesn't carry a light source.

With Blackjack's gear concealed in the building foundation (please make a post on your private forum with a list of what is left behind so we have a permanent record) and the gemstones divvied up among the three men, the pair of female rogues seem mollified, if not fully appreciative of the paternalistic response to their concern.

Blackjack descends first (I am assuming, with a rope), gripping the handholds and working his way downward. The evenly-spaced lumpy protuberances make it easier than normal to scale the sheer surface of the well's walls and about 60' down he finds himself in a small chamber, about 20' diameter and roughly circular. The room is littered with leaves and debris, fallen in from above, but has little else distinctive. Akkara and Achaedany descend behind him, Earc and Olaf finally bringing up the rear, everyone making it down safely. The walls are punctuated with narrow, low tunnels -- most about 6' high and 4' wide -- which will require you to go single file. They branch out in every direction, eight of them around this small room. Peering down each hallway, you see that they wind and intersect a confusing web of branching passages.

How do you choose to navigate? Turn-by-turn won't work.

"Bit of an echo in dem halls," says Olaf.

"They don't be dwarf made," he says with a disdainful sniff. "No art be in 'em. Sloppy."

The old thread is fine; you just can't see all the posts without refreshing the cache. I'd suggest either using the Zhym's Workaround spell (ctrl-shift-R or cmd-shift-R depending on platform) or waiting until the problem is cleared up, hopefully later tonight. If you try to use the new thread to "fix" the problem you'll soon discover that this thread looks like it has the same issue.

'Blackjack' Amistad

I guess the passages roughly line up to the North South divides, without any other clue such as sound or light ahead, Amistad shrugs and picks a tunnel to go down,"West is best" he says confidently.

Earc of Toll's Tower

"Not that I don't trust your sense of direction, Blackjack, but... what's the plan for getting back to here?"

"Does anyone have any chalk?" Earc retrieves one of his candles. He will use it to try and mark the nearest wall to see if it is visible, at least if you are looking for it. If it is, then he will use that to mark their passage.

"Given the number of turns we might be faced with, I'd suggest always going 'forward' as much as possible..."

"Got me rope," says Olaf, holding up a rope marked at 5' and 1' intervals. "I could map. If anyone got what to map with."

Are we still using this thread instead of the old one, since the old one isn't corrupted (and has Olaf's droll echo joke)?

Earc

Earc nods, "I have some parchment and ink and a quill. I could try and keep track of our progress..."

OOC: I'm fine with just staying with this thread. It starts when we actually go down the Morlock hole, which is kind of a nice starting point for a new thread.

Wax doesn't mark that well on the hallway; nobody volunteers any chalk. A rope is offered, but you know it won't trail that long, given the honeycombing of hallways you see ahead. Olaf offers to try to map and Earc supplies the writing materials. (Earc, subtract the materials. Mapping slows to 1/2 movement.)

You can add any preparation, still. I need a little time to write up as you begin exploration This will be more of a Torchbearer mapping/movement process..

Earc of Toll's Tower

Earc passes mapping materials over to Olaf.

'Blackjack' Amistad

"Keep on the lookout for runes and symbols, maybe Akaraa can identify some Morlock alphabet. Wouldn't surprise me though if these ancient tunnels had a few surprises in judging by the quality of craftsmanship seen so far, you know, hidden pitfalls, sliding doors."

First, LL Basic logistics. You're moving at 90', then half-speed for accurate mapping. So, you're moving 45' per turn, or 270' per hour in the tunnels. If you want to search for secret doors or traps, you need to half that again, so I'm going to assume you tell me explicitly when you want to do so. (If you're going to stumble into a trap, however, humans and thieves get standard detection checks.) As you move, I'm going to give you times - how long you moved, listed in the post note below - until you encounter the next thing of interest. You can mark down the locations in relation to each other accordingly, and figure the length of tunnels between by changing time back to distance. You need to keep your own rough map this way for your own use.

After carefully considering the best way to go and return, the party establishes Olaf to measure and map and they slow down to ensure the dwarf's accuracy in doing so. Blackjack sets off leading westward through the honeycombed tunnels, Akkara and Achaedany following with crossbows at the ready. Olaf and Earc consult each other as they move together, flanked front and behind by the two wary rogues.

You note that the tunnels are all somewhat rounded, smooth-sided, and cut in straight lines, striations in the stone often running counter to them. You find that the tunnels criss-cross confusingly without a focus on making rooms, though it isn't terribly long before you come to the first chamber-like structure. The tunnel ahead of your widens abruptly, forming a medium-sized round chamber with a domed ceiling. What first gets your attention is the litter of fur, bones, and detritus which covers the floor, mounding in swales a foot or two high. Then you look up and note the rust-red and dirty-yellow plumage of bird-like creatures which hang upside-down from the ceiling. You estimate there is between two and three dozen of the creatures resting in that position and they are unaware of you as you watch them.

'Blackjack' Amistad

Hushes the folk with his finger tips. Some kind of hybrid bat, shame we have no druid to 'speak to animals with. How big are they? Small bat size, duck sized, swan, ostrich? It will make a difference (at least to any cooking pot!).

The light may startle them, Amistad covers his CL stones and pokes some of the heaped mess with his axe shaft, seeing if creatures (rats, worms) nest within.

Any of the tunnels have doors or curtains, open cave rooms would not be a completely safe place even for the Morlocks at a guess.

You'd estimate them to be duck-sized - about a foot long with a two-foot wingspan. Amistad pokes the midden heaps on the floor, finding them to be fallen waste, nothing within those he can touch. You've not encountered doors or other chambers as-yet.

You dim your lights, and your actions have not yet disturbed the creatures hanging above.

Earc of Toll's Tower

Earc pulls back from the entrance and whispers to the others, "We might want to leave these creatures be, go back to our starting room, and try a different path. If anything, it will ensure we are mapping properly. But we also don't want to disturb or fight anything unnecessarily. They could possibly warn the morlocks of our presence or, at the very least, weaken us if we end up in a fight."
