The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Midnight. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

Image

In the byzantine warren of winding halls and passages in private areas of the desecrated temple, the heroes fight two battles on two separate spiral stairs.

In the stairwell between the ground floor and the second floor...

Hoom, recently freed from his iron cage, hurls darts across the open shaft at one of his former captors (A4). Two of the three steel spikes sink deep into the acolyte's black mask and he slumps to the marble steps, leaking blood.

Seeing this, Telkis changes targets. He is joined at the top of the stairs by Avril and the two pull their bow strings taut and rain arrows down upon another adherent of abomination (A14).

Image

Telkis' arrows splinter on the stone wall but Avril plunges one all the way to the feathers, into the cultist's eye socket. Shrieking his death knell, he topples over the railing and plummets down to the stones below with a sickening cracking of bones. A growing pool of crimson surrounds his shattered, silent form.

Urdur weaves an arcane spell of beguilement and domination upon the remaining disciple of damnation (A15). Then the dark gnome says, "You are so weary from all this fighting. Sleep here on the comfortable stairs."

The final black-robed cultist nods and carefully lies down.

Then Mouser cuts his throat.

No enemies remain in this stairwell.

Urdur's dog (M, formerly H2) runs down to its master and licks his face in a joyous reunion. The other hound (H1), confused and afraid, races down all the steps to the first floor and is gone!

Ingrid suddenly appears next to Avril and Telkis at the top of the stairwell. Somewhere far behind Ingrid, to the east, are the other heroes. Perhaps they still draw breath.

This map is a 30' tall, spiral stairwell connecting the church's ground floor to its second story. PC positions are depicted by their initials. A=Acolyte.
Movement is halved for climbing stairs. It's 100 feet of travel, three revolutions, to ascend the 30 feet to the top.
Missile Weapons: Firing up: effective range is doubled. Firing down: effective range is halved.

Elsewhere, in the stairwell between the church's second story and its bell tower...

Black sorcery breathes unholy life into the ghastly corpses of the inhuman Red Cloak tribe.

Image

Grothnak snarls for aid and fires arrows down the stone well. One impales the disgusting face of the undead Goblin Man that Pelias had disemboweled (ZG4). The macabre horror does not fall.
The half-orc warrior's second arrow misfires. (Please Save vs Dex on d20 or drop your bow.)

Standing in the trapdoor in the ceiling, Long Bo the druid glances around outside the belltower again. The shadow in the courtyard below is gone now. The mob of villagers, carrying pitchforks and torches, grows nearer. They will be at the front gate of the Church of Merikka in four or five minutes. Bo remembers the gate:

Image

The grey druid climbs down the wooden ladder from the ceiling trap door into the stairwell and slings a stone down at a loathsome, unliving Goblin Man, missing it clean.

Once more, a bloodcurdling voice echoes up the stone shaft, profaning this house of worship anew. It utters black words to pierce the frail veil of this reality and call for aid from a fell, unnameable master:

"'Ai! 'Ai! Fhtagn! Ftaghu! Thanarak!..."

Heinous blasphemies echoing around him, Pelias' sword clashes against that of the vile, hateful Goblin thrall (G1) sending sparks flying. The insidious, abhorrent degenerate sees an opening and thrusts his black sword at Pelias' heart, missing only by the grace of Heironeus.

"...Vulg'th! Shogg-Shuggli! Zhro!"

The evil spell reaches a crescendo and the remaining bloody cadavers of Goblin Men pull themselves up out of death's embrace. The dead rise, all except the skeletons that had been burned by fire.

The revenant that had been decapitated by Grothnak (ZG8) carries its horrific, blood-soaked head as its eyes loll and its mouth gapes without sound.

Image

The lone living skeleton (S10) outpacing them, the grisly, charnel house Goblins begin their terrible climb. The dreadful cadavers stagger upward on broken bones, leaving trails of fresh blood as they ascend higher and higher, to kill the heroes at the top of the spiral stair.

"Yes, let's go," says Telkis. "Come! The others are in the tower!" he yells down at the late arrivals. "Hoom, Mouser, glad to see you aren't dead!" He then smiles and flashes the secret Gnome hand signal to Urdur, then hurries off after Ingrid to help Grothnak, Pelias and Bo...

Hoom Feethos:

Hoom ascends the stairs and retrieves his thrown darts.
ChubbyPixie wrote: he yells down at the late arrivals. "Hoom, Mouser, glad to see you aren't dead!"
He looks up and waves to Telkis wonder the meaning of his statement. Was he really happy to see the pair alive? Or was he happy to see us alive so he and the other, that lived, can enact revenge for leaving them in that darken undead nest of ghoulish monstrosities. Surely they would would seek reprisal for removing their only means of escape, by setting a blaze their only exit to freedom and leaving them to their suffocating deaths? Either way Hoom was not going to turn his back anytime soon to the group. He waits for Mouser and Urdur to ascend first so he can have a two person buffer.

Urdur Shimmerstone, gnome illusionist
"Who's my good boy? Who's my good boy?" says Urdur to his dog Mittens, rubbing his belly as he does so. If he has any dog treats, Urdur gives one to Mittens.

Upon seeing the other gnome's signal, Urdur tries to remember. Was that the signal for Hello fellow gnome! or Don't trust the halfling!? Seeing no halflings around, Urdur assumes the gnome meant the former.

Urdur retrieves as many of his thrown daggers as possible, and does a quick search of the dead acolytes for anything useful. Afterwards, he nods to his new companions. "I think we should follow the gnome."
How do we know you're not a donkey-brained man?

Bo pockets his sling when he sees the last living goblin attack the paladin.

He thrusts his spear into the thing from his higher vantage point on the stairs.

Spear Attack [1d20] = 18 Damage [1d6] = 4

"While my magic lasts, I will try to put a stop to that mob of villagers headed our way. They will be here shortly, so lets kill these things once and for all!"

Grey Mouser, 1/2 elven MU/T
Mouser wipes his dagger clean on a clean spot of his enemy's raiment and shrugs at the two behind him. "Up we go," he says matter of factly. Then heads up to meet up with the others. But keeps his dagger and sabre at the ready.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Pelias sighs wearily as he hears the goblins below rise again. But first, he must attend to the living one in front of him. "Your fiercest of blows cannot pass my shield. Lay down your arms, and I will spare your life. Or, end up like your friends below..."

If the goblin does not comply, the paladin will strike at the last remaining goblin again

Attack with long sword +1 (THAC0 19) [1d20+1] = 18+1 = 19, damage [1d8+1] = 3+1 = 4

Attack with long sword +1 (THAC0 19) [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11, damage [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

If he is successful in slaying the goblin, he will behead it and cut off its arms, hoping to render the goblin v2.0 impotent.

The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Midnight. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

In the church of horrors, high in the spiral stairwell to the bell tower, Grothnak fires more arrows down at the inexorable rising tide of undeath. One arrow pierces the chest of an horrific, necrotic orc with a shattered spine (ZG2).

And then suddenly, a living skeleton is upon Grothnak!

Image

The dry bloodless corpse (S10) tries to strangle the half-orc warrior to death, but its cold fleshless hands cannot find leverage for murder (only -1 hp).

Across the open shaft, Long Bo and Pelias savagely impale and hack asunder the last Goblin Man archer (G1) who dies refusing to surrender to the paladin's mercy.

Image

Below, but moving ever closer, the gruesome living dead Goblin Men continue their lurching ascent up the spiral stair, higher and higher!

In one minute more, they will be upon Grothnak!

Elsewhere, the battle in the other serpentine stairwell of the defiled church is ended. The surviving heroes find nothing of value or interest on the slain cultists. They collect their darts and dagger and race to help their friends in the belltower stair.

Ahead, they hear a bonechilling, fell voice: "'Ai! 'Ai! Fhtagn! Ftaghu! Thanarak! Vulg'th! Shogg-Shuggli! Zhro!"
The air itself is electrified with dread potential. Pitch shadows seem to crawl.

Avril, Ingrid and Moogeye are first to reach the chapel (11) where they killed Misha Devi and her legion of undead. They still lie there, bloody and broken. With Moogeye Comcra.

Another gothic statue surprises the heroes in the dim candlelit chamber.

Image

Strangely, it stands before the closed door to the bell tower.

No wait.

It's not a statue.

It's alive!

Image

It's the hooded priest. He could only be Father Abramos (FA), the shepherd of Briarsgate's flock. It was his voice they heard summoning heinous, unspeakable powers to his aid.

"Arise!" he commands with hatred. "Break them!"

Suddenly, dead bodies on the floor stir, except those that perished by flame. Skeletons the heroes had smote now rise at the bidding of the unholy, damned cleric.

Image

And horribly, so does Moogeye Comcra.

Figuring it worth the risk, Telkis attempts to rush between the two newly risen skeletons and jab the butt end of his morningstar, Cranach, into the gut of the now evil priest, hoping to take him down unconscious or at least silence him:

Pelias switches to his long bow, firing two arrows at the ascending zombies. He will attempt to fire at the same one, hoping to take it down.

Edited based on the OOC thread post.
Urdur is momentarily shocked by what he has just beheld, but he quickly gathers his wits. He makes an educated guess about fire cleansing evil, as he runs into the room. As he does so, he commands his hound Mittens, "Attack!" indicating the unholy priest.

Urdur runs into the room and pulls out his last flask of oil as he does so. He throws the flask at the newly risen undead. If there is still time in this round, Urdur steps back and lights a torch.

Throw flask of oil at zombies (Thaco 20) [1d20+2] = 4+2 = 6 :(

Bo loads his sling again and takes a shot at the zombie with the most arrows in it. He quietly wishes he would have gone with his first instinct.

Sling Attack [1d20] = 2 Damage [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5

Grey Mouser, 1/2 elven MU/T
Mouser rushes in with Urdur or right before/after him and (getting no good feelings from the shouts of "arise") jumps over any bodies and oil pouring. "Where's the bad guy...," he whispers almost to himself. Then he follows the north wall if north is "up" on the map, stashing his sabre and dagger as he goes, getting out a sling and stone. He wants to move to the east of Avril, Ingrid and Telkis to spread out the attack of the undead. Mouser is also looking to get close enough for a sling attack on Father A but not too close that he can't run away from any undead.

Ingrid stares in abject horror as their once faithful companion, Moogeye, succumbs to the call of evil and joins the ranks of the undead.

At the top of her lungs, Ingrid shouts a command of baishment, "Return her soul to rest!"
Ingrid attempts to turn undead: Turn undead: [1d20] = 3, [1d12] = 10 Sorry, guys!
