ECOLOGY
Buccaneers are found on seas, rivers, great lakes, and oceans. They live by raiding coastal towns and capturing ships, selling the booty elsewhere. Most are Neutral fighters.

Pirates are seagoing men who plunder other vessels, raid coastal towns and engage in illegal slave trades. They are noted for their evil acts and cruelty toward prisoners. They also freely at- tack each other if there is a chance for profit. Most are Chaotic fighters.

The number of buccaneers or pirates that ap- pear depends on the type and number of ships they are sailing. Choose a type of ship to match the terrain. Buccaneers and pirates are organized as shown on the table.

For every 30 buccaneers, there is an additional 4th level fighter as leader. For every ship, there is a 7th level fighter as captain and a 9th level fighter as commander of the fleet. There is a 30% chance that a magic-user of level 10-11 is with the commander, and a 25% chance that an 8th level cleric is present.

For every 30 pirates, there is an additional 4th level fighter as leader. For every 50 pirates or 1 ship, there is a 5th level fighter captain. For every 100 pirates or 1 fleet, there is an 8th level fighter commander. For every fleet of 300 or more pirates, there is an 11th level fighter (Pirate Lord), as commander of the fleet, and a 75% chance for a 9th or 10th level magic-user.
Buccaneers and pirates may carry their treasure with them or have maps showing where it is buried. The treasure given is the total for the entire buccaneer pack or pirate fleet, and may be di- vided as desired. Pirates may also (25% chance) 1d3 prisoners with them awaiting ransom. Well-defended coastal towns often serve as havens for pirates and buccaneers. These are law- less and dangerous places, full of possible adventures.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Paralytic
Once the Giant Slug has made a successful bite it injects a paralytic toxin so that it may eat its victim, alive, in peace.
Save vs. Poison:
  • Success: Victim is able to move at half speed for the duration of effect. (-2 attacks, +2 Initiative, ½ speed)
  • Failure: Paralyzed
Duration: 2d6 rounds

Malleable
The Giant Sea Slug’s skin is very rubbery and malleable and secretes a viscous clear sticky slime. The slug can squeeze itself through any hole down to half it’s diameter at normal speed. Holes down to ¾ its size can also be traversed but speed is reduced to ¼.

Mucus Barrier
The Sea Slug secretes a highly viscous outer mucous layer that acts as natural barrier from the harsh sea environment and protection from predators. This thick viscous layer of slime is tenaciously sticky making it very difficult to remove without the aid of someone or something else. Any who get the mucous on their hands will be unable to hold on to anything until the mucous is removed. A full round and the aid of someone or something else is required to remove the slime. The slime itself is filled with tine Sea Nymphs that fluoresce in moonlight giving off a yellowish-green light equal to that of the active moonlight.

Weakness
Although the Giant Sea Slug is a persistent fighter with a voracious appetite and covered in a thick maddeningly impossible to remove layer of slime, once they have been damaged enough to reduce their HP to half, their internal cavity is no longer able to support its form and the organs quickly loose cohesion and ooze out, at which point the Sea Slug can no longer fight and begins to die slowly.

ECOLOGY
The Giant sea slug is a sightless omnivore that roams the sea floor with a voracious appetite. Anything not quick enough or smart enough to get out of the way becomes a meal. Adult Giant Sea Slugs roam the ocean floor in small pods. Twice a year, in mid summer and mid winter, pods will merge into massive herds of slugs to mate for several weeks and then disperse again to forage. The soft opaque eggs, several inches in diameter, are fixed to the giant stalks of Bull Kelp until they hatch several weeks later. The young Sea slugs feed on the Bull Kelp for several weeks, growing nearly a foot in length, and then migrate to the shores and freshwater inlets to forage, quickly growing in size over the coarse of several weeks, until they become 5’ long juveniles, at which time they move away from the coast and onto shallow sea shelves where they roam in packs for up to a year marauding anything that happens to get in their way, living or dead. Occasionally, when food sources are scare, a juvenile pod will enter a fresh water tributary causing havoc among local villagers and their livestock. Juveniles stick to the sea floor during the day and forage the shallower areas at night. Adults stick primarily to the deeper parts coming to the surface only occasionally.

Giant Sea Slugs have both gills and lungs as juveniles for better survivability. Once their size surpasses 7’ in length they move to deeper waters and their lungs transform into internal gills chambers and water is pumped in and out instead of air.

Both adults and juveniles have an outer row of sharp pointed teeth, like that of an eel, and several inner rows shaped like those of a shark that bite and grid away at their prey, taking large chunks at a time and swallowing them whole. A successful attack by a Giant Sea Slug accomplishes several things at once. The outer teeth latch into their prey and begin pumping a paralytic while the inner teeth begin to cleave away at the flesh.

The Giant Sea Slug’s outer mucous layer acts as natural barrier from the harsh sea environment by preserving internal hydration and acting as protection from other predators. The thick viscous outer layer of slime is quite sticky and very difficult to remove without the aid of someone or something else, making it quite effective against other sea creatures. Any creature who attempts to bite into a Giant Sea Slugs ends up with a nasty tasting mouthful of slime that cannot be spit out or swallowed, at which time the slug turns on its victim. The slime also contains a tiny invertebrate sea nymph that slowly feeds on the slime secretion. This is a symbiotic relationship of sort. The sea nymph slowly removes slime while the Sea Slug secretes it, thus a new layer of slime is continually being produced. The tiny Sea Nymphs fluoresce in moonlight giving off a yellowish-green light equal to that of the moonlight. On a night with a clear full moon a single juvenile Sea Slug can light an area roughly three times their size.
