Some BX Adventure [Waitlist]

#1 Post by dmw71 »

A few days ago I started thinking about running a Basic (BX) game, so it's only a matter of time before it happens.

Posting Frequency: Daily
Number of Players: 4-6

My plan is to use the following rulesets:
BX.jpg
BX.jpg (178.19 KiB) Viewed 583 times
(Note: A player could probably get by using the free 'Labyrinth Lord' rules, but the default rules will always apply in the event there are any contradictions between the editions. The same would go for Frank Mentzer's BECMI rules, or the Rule's Cyclopedia.)

I started to work on a set of house rules the other day, and they are still very much a work in progress. There will likely be more than the following, but here are some of my initial thoughts on some 'big' topics:
  • 3d6 in order (I have some ideas here).
  • Maximum hit points at first level (and re-roll 1's for any level beyond first).
  • I will be implementing a spell point system (and, yes, clerics still need to wait until 2nd-level before getting their first spell).
  • I'm also going to be using Greg's (ToniXX) ability check method, which I think is an awesome idea.
What I run will likely depend on player interest.

Any takers?

Awesome!

Maybe the game will graduate to expert levels and we could end up running X4? ;)

Dave's DMing, Greg is playing, I gotta be in.
Y'all will have to be patient with me on this edition. If Greg wants cleric, I'll be a dwarf or fighting man (oops that's OD&D) or something.
--Ron--
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Nice.

We're up to three.
  1. Greg (ToniXX)
  2. Ron (rredmond)
  3. Rob (OGRE MAGE)
I'm hoping to get at least one (and up to three) more.

Moderator-run game?

B/X rules?

I mean... Do I have to say anything? Or is my participation just understood?

You'll make five.

So, do we cap it at five, or do we go for six? Thoughts?

P.S.
By the way, Greg, I may need that forum sooner than I thought. Hahahaha

How close are LL or the Rules Cyclopedia to BX?

LL is close enough that chances are good you wouldn't have an issue.

That's a good question. I've never really compared them. I imagine they're all pretty close. LL is the direct OSRIC equivalent, but they need to modify certain things to make it work (e.g. experience point requirements, etc...).

I have all -- BX, LL, and Rule's Cyclopedia -- so I can easily reference any of them. I suspect that the major rules will all be the same, it's just that the actual "B" and "X" books will be deciding factor if there are any discrepancies.

Makes sense. I went ahead and picked up the B/X PDFs anyway, but Basic is so, well, basic that I hardly ever find myself referring to the rulebook in Keehnelf's game except during character creation.

Now you just have to hope you live long to make it to the "X". ;)
