Unfortunately I believe Emm would have likely would have left her spear & shield where she hid in the tall grass... Trying to make friends (Even charmed friends) while bristling with weapons is not usually successful. Still has her scimitar strapped on, tho!

EST: An old giant island acquaintance returns...

#62 Post by Argennian »

~ The southern trail strike team's quickly-laid plan seems to be going well enough. The big crossbowman, apparently a sergeant of the Karagonian Navy, is magically fast asleep and snoring soundly in the sand whilst the charmed falconer soldier seems to have completely bought the now even more charismatic druid's story, hook, line and sinker. In fact, you can say he's completely enamored of her and now also her exotic, bee-taming, High-elven sister...

With mighty Chaska, apparently the trained hawk of one Lt. Brom, on her shoulder, Emm steps over to join Lauranna just west of where she emerged by the northern treeline and trail head, leading the charmed corporal away from his magically-slept sergeant. Cutler reaches the man, and just as he's about to set down his captured crossbow and check him over, another of the island's giant diverse denizens decides to show up for an unlikely, impromptu beach reunion of sorts...

Emerging from the far eastern treeline and brush is the front half (almost 20 feet) of what appears to be a giant monitor lizard! It's mostly dark grey in color with a lighter belly and flicks it's long, pinkish tongue towards those ahead of it on the beach barely some 50 feet away. It has a hungry look in it's eyes... well in at least one, as it appears to have had it's left eyeball removed in what must have been some incredibly painful and traumatic event...

Although she did not notice any signs of the giant reptile's approach ahead of time, Caelvanna was still scanning the cove for danger with a readied finger on the trigger when the massive island reptile emerged east of her, some 70' away...

***************************************************

*** Need a d6 initiative roll & Declared Actions for the party for Round 1! ***

(~ please include any potential attack rolls, if being made)

OOC: okay gang, no one in the party was surprised by the giant monitor's appearance, at least not in the initiative-mechanics sense of it, so we're going off of rolled initiative. Let's see, I think Lauranna might be the only team member present to have already met this old chap! :D

POP: Because Caelvanna was separate from the others and on station ready for trouble, I allowed her a separate surprise roll & a spot check (with unknown modifier) to see if she, by chance noticed any movement within the eastern treeline and brush ahead of time of the creature's appearance. If she would have, she could've potentially readied a shot and taken that in the surprise round.
But regardless, since she was not surprised, and had her specialized missile weapon loaded and to hand, will get her High Dex bonus of +2 to the party's rolled initiative for Round 1.

So noted and thanks for the honest clarification, Rexx! ;)

While Caelvanna didn't want to betray her location just yet, the arrival of this giant lizard forces her to action. She emerges from the brush she had been hiding in and begins taking steps towards the others on the beach, firing off a series of arrows at the beast while it is still a distant, unengaged target.

When Lauranna spots the beast, all she can think is Oh Crap. She remembers the last encounter with this giant reptile and it was not so good. The speed and sheer power of the giant could make quick work of her. Her thoughts shift from killing the beast to simple escape. But that plan, however, poses it's own set of issues. Steeling herself for a fight, she hides from the one good eye of the thing, drawing her daggers looking for and opportunity to attack once the beast is engaged.

Damn! Of ALL the times... The Druid's brain scrambles for separate action when the plan was going so well. Cutler, get clear!

Emm turns quickly to Chaska: Get to safety! Stay out of harm's way! She then glares at the huge beast, anger that would wither a Warrior in her dark eyes, and begins a familiar chant.

Speak With Animals

What are you doing here?? Looking for food? Take that sleeping one, he's of no use to us. Take him and go!

EST: Encounter 18: The party greets the giant lizard...

Another Encounter with the Giant Monitor: Round 1

Initiative
Party: 6
Lizard: 3

~ The giant monitor lizard's sudden appearance at the eastern side of the cove causes the party to quickly spring into action...

Before everyone else has had a moment's chance to react to the newly-arrived island menace, Caelvanna stands up from behind cover and sends her readied flight arrow zipping through the cool, coastal air. It sinks deep in the creature's neck (6dam), causing it to jerk back in surprise. The specialist archer then begins to move away from her covered fire position and towards the others on the beach as she draws her next arrow and prepares to fire again...

With a look of dreaded recollection to her High-elf visage, Lauranna draws her dual daggers of death and steps into the obscuring floral protection of the northern treeline, intent on not only hiding from the massive reptile's one good, probing eye but also repositioning herself for a potential sneak attack from cover.

Emm calls out to Cutler to get clear at the same time that Chaska takes flight from her shoulder. The still-spelled majestic avian apparently considers it's own survival and getting clear well before the druidess has the chance to instruct him to do so. She instead focuses on the massive reptile and begins to cast another spell...

Cutler spins around and fires the loaded crossbow he was just about to set down in the sand. The cook's spinning, acrobatic shot is hurried but the heavy quarrel manages to find the giant lizard's forward left flank and sticks in halfway (3dam), causing it to flinch yet again. Caelvanna fires off her second arrow immediately after, but the streaking missile misses the mammoth monitor to the right and flies off errant into the eastern treeline.

"Look out! Get back!" cries the charmed Karagonian corporal as he draws his sword and takes up a defensive position in front of his newly-met druid best friend. The young man's eyes are wide with fear as he considers the giant island predator staring them down hungrily.

Despite already being wounded twice and not having the best track record when it comes to encounters with Karagonian escapees, the giant monitor flicks it's long, pink tongue one last time and begins charging towards the party. The creature moves quickly for it's size and girth and begins to cover the short, sandy distance with unsettling speed. It appears focused on Cutler, who positioning-wise, just happens to be the closest warm-blooded meal...

Having already realized that she needed to seize the moment to avoid potential disaster befalling her, her companions and their well-laid plan, Emm continues casting her latest speak with animals spell as the giant monitor closes on them. Caelvanna fires off her third arrow before the druid finishes casting but the missile bounces of the beast's tough hide and sails off to impale a tree further back.

Just as the overgrown lizard is about to attempt a hungry bite of Cutler, Emm finishes casting her spell and brings the mammoth island predator to a skidding halt in the sand a mere dozen feet away from the Seahawk's beloved cook. She uses her druidic powers to nature speak with the giant island reptile, who shifts it's one good eye from the now dual dagger wielding cook to her as she speaks to it and relays unknown instructions.

Although her companions cannot understand what she's saying, Cutler appears to be on the same page. He quickly realizes that the druidess has used her magics to stop the giant predator and sheaths his coveted magical blades. He then grabs up the still-sleeping body of the Karagonian sergeant, and in an impressive Olympian display of strength and dexterity, swings him in a circle and heaves him in front of the hungry, waiting giant. The massive monitor seems unimpressed until the man begins to stir.
"Wha... what's going on?" the soldier exalts, having been awaken from his magical slumber when he hit the sand.

The poor man's movement and confused exaltation seems to be enough to ring the giant lizard's instinctual dinner bell and it scoops him up quickly in it's massive maw. The man screams in both surprise and pain and begins to thrash about in futile desperation.

"No! Sarg!!" the charmed soldier cries out, suddenly switching from frozen in fear to emboldened to action. He lifts his sword and begins to move towards the giant reptile in an apparent attempt to strike out at it and get it to drop his commanding officer...

Caelvanna, undeterred by the giant lizard, attempts to approach the beast on its missing eye side, and looks to drive her short sword into its scaly hide.

Lauranna continues to get in a position to enter the melee, depending on what transpires here. Perhaps the beast will go with it's meal.

Another Encounter with the Giant Monitor: Round 2

Party Initiative for Round 2: [1d6] = 5

Initiative
Party: 5
Lizard: 2

~ The poor, surely-doomed Karagonian sergeant continues to flail and gurgle-scream blood in the massive, toothy maw of the leviathan predator while it chews on him excitedly...

In one fluid, well-practiced motion, Caelvanna slings her coveted short bow, draws her ever-sharp elven sword and begins to stalk to her right to circle the blind flank of the giant monitor while it's transfixed on the druidess. Although out of sight and unseen by her compatriots, Lauranna continues to do the same thing, stalking further east within the northern treeline to be able to get into a position to strike near the creature's back right flank. Emm also continues to use her druid magics to nature-speak with the overgrown lizard in a language that only the two of them can understand...

The charmed soldier begins to move towards the giant monitor and raises his longsword as if he might actually swing on it. Before he can get close enough to try, however, Cutler comes flying in from the man's left flank.
"No! It'll kill you, too!" he cries with fake concern as he tackles the young man hard, pulling him down to the sand and easily wrestling the blade from his hands. The grizzled cook then secures the man in a one-armed headlock of sorts and begins pulling him back and away.

The giant lizard watches the Karagonian soldier and escapee interaction unfolding just in front of it with it's one good eye, but instead of joining in the melodramatic scuffle, appears compelled to follow the very suggestive directions that the druidess is applying. It spins around to it's right and begins to depart the hidden southern cover with it's juicy, gurgling prize.

Already committed to her course of martial action, and not wanting to miss the opportunity to draw more of the massive reptile's blood, Caelvanna lunges in, jumping over the creature's swinging tail as it spins about, and takes a swipe at it. Her aim is true and the sharp, well cared for blade catches and slices open the beast's lower, right rear flank (4dam), causing more of it's precious reptilian blood to spray out.

The massive monitor flinches from the blow, but instead of turning to confront the aggressive Wild-elf fighter, continues to lumber off to the east with it's chain armor-entombed morning meal. Dripping fresh blood and sporting two new projectiles sticking out of it's tough hide, it crashes back through the eastern treeline and disappears from sight with the thick flora...

At the great lizard's departure, Emm rushes to where Cutler has wrestled the guard to the ground. Cutler is right, there is nothing any of us could do! You saw how the beast shrugged off arrows and even a well-placed sword strike. It would have killed us all! She tries her best to calm the young Warrior, adding: Everyone in your detail knows there are dangers on this isle, everyone knows the risks. At least now our friendship will remain a secret. We don't want any others to know of our presence yet. The Sergeant would surely have reported us to your superiors.

Cutler lets the shocked soldier up to his feet, also grabbing his hand axe & dagger from his belt in the process.
"You won't need these when with us. I'll keep 'em safe," he explains with a fake smile and penetrating gaze as he slides the soldier's longsword through an empty belt loop and stuffs the dagger and hand axe into his belt line.

The charmed soldier looks as if he wants to disagree but one look into the cook's hard, 1000-yard stare dashes his intentions on the rocks of false hope. He turns to look back at Emm, unsure of everything that's happening...

At least now our friendship will remain a secret. We don't want any others to know of our presence yet. The Sergeant would surely have reported us to your superiors.
The charmed soldier's eyes begin to get watery as he takes in Emm's explanation and looks back at the eastern treeline. "His name was Milbur. He was a close friend of me father's, from the war. He was like an uncle... and always looked out for me after me pappy died. Helped me get a commission to the Gallant too," the young man explains before looking back up to the druidess.
"I... I promise I wouldn't tell the lieutenant or them others about you and the others, I swears it! I'll just tell em that we was attacked by that giant lizard and that it got Sgt. Milbur. You can trust me, you know you can trust me!" he begs and pleads, looking from Emm to Cutler to Caelvanna and then over his shoulder to try and find the druid-queen's High-elf sister still hidden somewhere within the northern treeline.

Circling up above the cove, the still-spelled hawk caws down at the procession the beach. Cutler leaves the sergeant's fired crossbow in the sand and heads over to the navy longboat to have a look-see at what's inside...

Emm nods and winks to the Elfmaid, but keeps her voice on the Guard. You're a good boy, I know you will never betray us. You see Caelvanna there, but you did not see her before. We like to tease her about being the ugliest of all the Sisters, Emm shoots the Wild Elf a comical sideways glance, But she is also the strongest and most lethal among us. She leans close to the young guard, whispering. And she doesn't like men much, so try your best not to irritate her, okay?

The Priestess notes Cutler rifling thru the longboats contents, then returns her gaze to the guard. I have one final question, before I give your standing orders. You said that your raiding party was after some coin, skeletal remains, and the nest of a great bird. Tell me of this, especially the bird. Quickly, now, for our time runs short!

The druidess offers the charmed soldier some incentive to remain where he is, detailing that he best not irritate her Wild-elf sister. The corporal looks over and sees Caelvanna appraising him with her own 1000-yard stare. He gets the message loud and clear.

Emm regroups with Lauranna and Cutler at the longboat and the High-elf magic-user/thief discusses their proposed plan and the relevant details of making it a believable one. The cook nods his understanding and adds his opinion that they should bring the charmed soldier back to the ship with them so Shanny can work her own magics on the man, to find out what else he knows about the Gallant and her crew, and why they're here...

The charmed soldier snaps to dutifully at his new best friend's query requests. "Aye, there was rumored to be an old shipwreck that the lieutenant was speaking of before we arrived here. The captain of that vessel and his cargo was something of interest to him and the wizard Fellan. He had hoped to look about for that more after locating and capturing the great bird...

"That great bird was said to be some kind of very rare, intelligent owl, or something like it. One of the wizard's ravens spied and tracked it back to it's nest somewhere up there,"
he explains, pointing north and up to the high peak at the center of the island. "Said it was very valuable and could be communicated with if they could take it alive, so they could learn more about the island and garner any intel on recent comings and goings..."

Emm's eyes narrow and darken with new anger. They are after the Great Owl! And there is no way the Druid can warn her raptor friend. She just knew those ravens were up to no good! She turns and slowly paces away from the guard a moment, gathering her thoughts, weighing options, and looking to her Elven friends, showing them the consternation she feels. Finally she turns back, and when she speaks there is no humor in her voice nor manner.

You have done well, my friend. This is how we must progress from here: We will need all written correspondence your bird has carried. You will dispatch another message immediately, informing your scouting party of the revered Sgt Milbur's unfortunate death by the great lizard, and urgently request a timely withdrawal. Every day hence you will send Chaska to a location I will reveal only to him with a message detailing all Karagonian activities that day, and all plans for the next day, on and around this island. Each message will be on blue colored paper. She replies at his questioning expression, You are resourceful, you will find a way. She stares hard into the young man's eyes. Know this: The Great Owl is Mistress of this Isle, and she is not to be trifled with. If your friends find her, they, and all with them are doomed. She comes for her enemies in the night! Those who now search for her have sealed their fate, there is no use of telling them any of this. I tell you only because I don't want you to be among her victims. If and when you return here, stay with the longboat. Do not seek her out.

The Priestess turns her eyes to the hawk, beckoning the avian to return to her.

Speak With Animals Can't believe I've used 4 of this spell today!

My friend, I fear I must ask a terrible favor of you. I am sorry, but I beg you to remain with this Human dolt for a short time yet. I need you to carry correspondence between he and I, so I may know what plans his ignorant masters make. Can you do that for me? Each message for me alone will be the color of the sea. There is a hidden cove, almost an hour west of here, as you fly. It will appear empty, but circle over and call. I will find you. She pauses a moment. And, if you are able, if the chance ever comes when nothing can see you, and you can safely do so, kill every raven you can.

Returning her gaze and voice to the Corporal, Emm quizzes him one final time. I have only 3 more questions for you right now, then we must begone. How many are in that scouting party of yours, and who are they? Tell me of this Wizard Fellan. When he answers, she comes uncomfortably close to him, her eyes locked on his. And what is your name?

~ When the charmed corporal drops the dreaded intel bomb, Emm takes the blast full force. Anger and fear explode in a massive adrenaline shot of realization that threatens to disintegrate her cool, island-queen exterior. The druidess has to turn around and walk it off, lest their continued collective subterfuge be for naught.

Lauranna walks away as well, her plan being to clean up their tracks and any evidence that she and the others were here at all. The High-elf magic-user/thief gathers a thick, leafy branch from the northern treeline and begins wiping away her and her fellow southern strike team members' tracks from the sand.

Caelvanna keeps her coveted and reloaded missile weapon to hand and her keen Wild-elf concentration and intentions on being ready to shoot anything that enters the small southern cove while Emm figures out a way to work it out. She remains speechless for the operation, choosing instead to do her talking with her blade and bow.

Cutler continues to rummage through the soldiers' items and gear in the navy longboat and chances a glance over at Emm to check her status as he reads the communiques that the trained hawk has been taking to and fro...

tkrexx wrote:...

The young soldier's pasty white, sweaty visage creases with more and more concern and dread as Emm lays out her explicit instructions. He retrieves the avian-delivered communiques nervously, trying not to meet the penetrating gaze that Cutler has reaffixed upon him, and hands them over to the druidess with shaky hands before grabbing up a quill pen, ink well and new piece of parchment from his pack to write out the message she requested he send out.

"Blue paper? But I have none! You know I would try my best to do as you bid but I worry that I'll be found out and questioned! The lieutenant is a very suspicious man, and will keep Chaska with him unless he has need of him. He will most likely continue to try and capture that giant bird before he decides to leave the isle here, even knowing the loss of Sgt. Milbur," he details, fear evident in his crackling voice and wringing his hands together in a gesture of hopelessness. "The wizard Fellan would not be pleased if we were to return empty handed. If we do, he would likely dispatch more soldiers and mayhap even see to the task himself!"

The last of his fearful pleas fall on deaf ears as Emm has already turned around and began calling for the trained hawk circling above to return back to her. It does so and she again uses her druidic powers to nature-speak with it and relay instructions that only she and the majestic raptor can comprehend*...

Cutler moves over next to the charmed corporal to reiterate the island-queen's instructions and convince him with a most wicked sneer that he'd better start figuring out a way to make it all happen. The poor soldier looks about ready to pass out from the strain of trying to do so...

tkrexx wrote:...
"There are five other men with the lieutenant. One a cleric of Dagda and the others are soldiers, members of the Elite Naval Guard. They're very tough and experienced...

"The wizard Fellan is reputedly a high mage of the Karagonian crown. He replaced the former wizard that was stationed aboard the Gallant for our current mission here at the Sprice Tridents. He is accompanied by his own entourage of henchmen and commands very powerful magics. They say he can read people's minds and knows when someone is lying. I fear if I were brought before him that he would look into my mind and find out about you and the others here! You know I would not voluntarily betray your confidence, but even if I said nothing, I fear he would somehow know!"

Emm moves up close to the charmed corporal for her last question, which stands him up straight but does not stop his shaking when he sees the hard look in her eyes. The lieutenant's trained hawk sitting dutifully on her leather-armored shoulder fixes him with it's own hard gaze.

"My name is Tal. Tal Brevins. My other friends call me Tally," he details with watery eyes and crackly voice...

Finish your message, Emm politely asks, her eyes trailing down. Add that you fear the great lizard's imminent return. I am sorry, Tally, for I have asked too much of you. Finish your message and wait here.

The Druid turns, head down, and steps toward her friends. The plan has worked up until now, but can go no further, she speaks in hushed tones, so the guard cannot hear. He is too stupid, and his superiors too powerful and well organized. And if this Wizard Fellan can indeed read minds... It seems Cutler was right, we must take him with us. Shanny can grill him, then at least he can be a suitable replacement for one of the lost members of the Seahawk's crew. We should take the boat, as if Tally was fleeing from the lizard. The Hawk will also accompany us. This will at least delay the raiding party somewhat.

Emm's eyes flash up to her friends, then downward again. You all know I cannot allow these men to molest the Great Owl, but we are unable to fight them at this moment. My blessings must be replenished, and altered. Gentleman Billy and Captain Billings will be most interested in whatever shipwreck and coin that the raiders seek, Again her eyes find her comrades, But I must kill all those in the raiding party. They must never reach another Karagonian ear.

The Priestess turns to check on Tally's progress, at this time mildly amazed the ignoramus is actually literate. He will send the bird with another message. Caelvanna, your eyes are better than mine. Follow the hawk's trail as far as possible, so at least we know the general vicinity of their position, and their search. She returns her voice to the bumbling guard. Where is the Gallant anchored?

Caelvanna will follow the hawk, per Emm's plan. "And you can count on me to help hunt down the raiding party," she adds with a perverse sense of pleasure.
