The Lone City in the Wildlands - OSRIC/AD&D 1e sandbox[open]
OK, The Lone City in the Wildlands is on!
Hi,
There are a couple of excellent sandbox campaigns going on right now on the Unseen Servant. I'm posting to see if there's interest in another sandbox, based on OSRIC (AD&D 1e clone) rules. The basic premise is this:
You’ve lived your entire life within a few miles of the city of Alleborg, a relic of the ruined Masmurian Empire. Or at least, you’ve been there since the traitor king fled several decades ago. The Council runs the city state now. Their Guards of Alleborg have managed to maintain enough of a buffer around the city to provide for their needs, but little contact has been maintained with the outside world. The Guards are never bored for long. Dangers abound from all directions, and the raids from humanoids on farmers and livestock at the edge of The Perimeter have seemed to increase over the last few months. It is under this backdrop that you see this notice posted:
“Men and women wanted to form small parties for exploration outside The Perimeter. No wages. Hazardous training provided. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor, recognition and possible wealth in case of success.”
***********
I will shamelessly steal a couple of concepts from the excellent games that are being run.
1) Private forums - I've enjoyed dmw71's approach of using private forums. It increases the feeling of exploration, and makes it easier for characters to reveal only what they want to
2) Keehnelf's The West Marches Approach - I had heard of this before, and keehnelf has implemented it with resounding success. Alleborg will serve as the jumping-off point for mini-adventures (at least at the start). There are several advantages to this, the biggest being that when IRL issues get in the way of playing, a character can go on hiatus instead of holding up the whole party.
Other notes:
- This game wouldn't kick off until just after Christmas.
- It will be a sandbox, but there will be a railroad only at the beginning. It'll be high risk, high reward. Players have the option to bypass this if they want.
- I hope to have a post a day frequency on weekdays
- There will be some house rules. Some notable ones include:
Substitution of the monk class for the assassin class
Critical hits/fumbles will be used according to the method found here (with some adjustments) - http://www.epicwords.com/attachments/9232. as players increase in ability, the likelihood of a critical hit increases while fumbles decrease.
Please let me know if there's interest, or you have questions.

Re: The Lone City in the Wildlands - OSRIC [gauging interest
I've been considering whether to do a poll in my game asking if folks would like to switch to private forums or not. Good luck! I'd love to say "me, me!" But I am...committed if I find myself with extra time I will certainly jump in though.

I would certainly be interested. I'm really digging the sandbox approach. (Pun firmly intended.)

Interested. I like this type of sandbox approach, where choices are many, but at the same time limited by how dangerous the outside world is.

I would be interested in a some OSRIC sandbox time.

Count me in Alebelly!
I kind of regret not jumping on the other sandboxes until it was too late.
I actually have a few archived characters that I made for fun in the unseen servant so I should be able to fill any gaps class wise, just need to tweak the character I use a bit (background and such).

I don't know how you keep so many high-quality games going at the same time. Please feel free to pop in at any time.Keehnelf wrote:I've been considering whether to do a poll in my game asking if folks would like to switch to private forums or not. Good luck! I'll go ahead and ask Toni to set up forums, and I'll start posting character generation instructions and house rules. Again, this game likely won't kick off until Dec 28 or so.

Just FYI, arch-duchy of Vaul is always recruiting if you find yourself with spare posting timeMonkeyWrench wrote:Count me in Alebelly!

Great! I'm not planning on having a cut-off necessarily, but will cap the initial, short railroad at 8 players. I'll also obviously cap it if I get in over my head.
The campaign ID is 230. As soon as a forum is created, I'll begin posting house rules, character creation, description of what your characters will know, etc. Please link all dice rolls to this campaign number.
In case you can't wait to get started, the basics of character creation are: roll 4d6, drop one for each attribute. At this point, you can either 1) rearrange as you like or 2) "play it as it lies" - if you do this, you are rewarded with an additional 2 ability points that you can put to any score (as long as it doesn't take the natural over 18). OSRIC ability minimums apply to the character classes.

Edit (after sobering up this morning): I'm going to lurk in this game instead of attempt to take a player spot. I just joined another game so I have enough on my gaming plate for now. Thanks!

Winter is coming...
Re: The Lone City in the Wildlands - OSRIC [gauging interest
Yenny Lufts is a clumsy female gnome cleric who is exceptionally wise, reasonably strong (for her size) and only slightly slow-witted. She seems fairly average for a gnome, as far as looks and personality go (although who knows what average is for a gnome) and she desperately needs to earn a little dough. Plenty more to follow once the appropriate forums are up and running.

I think I need to wait a bit before joining any more games, but I'm definitely keeping this on my radar!
