Caelvanna stealthfully breaks away from the rest of party and seeks a concealed position off to the side of the main group. If missile exchange is necessary, her experience has taught her that, instead of launching arrows directly over the members of her party in front of her, a better strategic position would be to have a more clear shot at her target from an angle so as to minimize the risk of injury from friendly fire.

Once she finds her desired location, ideally at least partially concealed or hidden by bushes, plants or another form of tall vegetation, she keeps herself low, arrow nocked and ready to fire in the direction she suspects the danger is coming from.

Lauranna continues to her left, into the undergrowth, moving slow enough to be quiet, out of sight and watching for any possible foe.

[1d100] = 68 move silently
[1d100] = 12 hide in shadows

AT1: OOC for party

#43 Post by Argennian »

OOC: Ok, I have declared actions from most but still want to give Xaxyx and Nyctos an opportunity to respond here. I'll answer a couple of clarification questions posted previously in the interim. (I'll also be happy to explain what those dice rolls were for once we get down to it!)

tkrexx wrote:Emm draws forth a tiny sprig of mistletoe and an oak leaf from her pouch.
Approximately how long is our line? Emm is at the rear, how far to the front? For spell range purposes.
The line was originally spread out over 50-60 feet but had sucked up a bit when everyone stopped. The distance from the frontline (Gentleman Billy and the old knight) back to the last person in rearguard (Lauranna) is approximately 45-50 feet or so, so Emm would be @ 5 feet or so from Lauranna and @ 40-45 feet from the frontline.

Mitch, do you, or the players, make these type of rolls?
I posted a more lengthy response to this in the OOC/Questions? thread but yeah, the DM will make most of these rolls for the thief class PCs.

Griffo moves a few paces away from the line in the opposite direction from Caelvanna. He then starts to move towards the head of the line being as unobtrusive as possible.

Encounter on the Coast Trail; Surprise Round 1 (to Party)

#47 Post by Argennian »

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: just after midnight)

As everyone continues to ready themselves, the elf with the funny hat suddenly stops and calls out in common, "Cover your eyes!" A mere moment later, he lets loose a beam of incredible white light from his still-pointed wand. It perceivably slams into the dark, swirling fog permeating the trail ahead. Although most of you cover your eyes or at least look away, the brilliant burst of brightness still takes you by surprise. A low rumble reverberates throughout the area in response, in a way that could be described as angered or even pained, in comparison to before.

You blink, squint and begin to slowly regain the focus in your eyes. The light formed by the wand ahead suddenly becomes a bit duller, adding much more clarity of detail to your vision. A deep voice bellows out just in front of Bog’s position. "Enemies to the sides! Make ready!"

The party members immediately check their flank and see what must be dozens of small, dark humanoids to each side. They are perhaps 80-90 feet out from the trail, spread out in a skirmish line, and must have been advancing on the party. Although currently some stand and others crouch, they all have their heads turned to the side in what appears to be an attempt to shield their eyes from the light. All of them are armed with various types of weapons: spears, swords, axes and bows. Those with bows have them mostly trained in the party’s direction but at present are currently looking away. The party definitely has the drop on them…

State your Actions!

(some PMs going out tonight...)

~ Although everyone had to avert/block their eyes, readiness from your declared actions still applies here. There are at least 2 dozen of these dark-colored humanoids to each side (north and south). There are 6 archers that can be seen to each side. The remainder of them all have melee/thrown weapons as described above. Distance will be considered at least 80 feet out.

Every party member gets a free action this round.

(Alethan’s die roll of 4 ensures that the party is not surprised The percentile roll? Who knows as of yet? ). Those that are specialized with their readied missile weapons will get their extra shot off in this round (ROF of 5/2).

~ Everyone, please declare your actions.

Party counters: Following what Super DM Ron does in his games (thanks, SDMR! 8-) ), I’ve added counters below that show the party’s current HP/Status, WIH (Weapon In Hand), and MO (Marching Order). Current MO is reflected by whose closet to the front (Bog) and whose furthest in the rear (Lauranna).
- please advise if there's any changes or updates needed.

- Caelvanna/Griffo: you stated your PCs were on opposite sides of the trail. Please pick which side your PC is on: north or south.
- Note: if any PC went further than 10' off the trail in the previous round, please list north or south in your next post.

HPs/Status: Bog 9/9 ; Caelvanna 8/8 ; Emm 6/6 ; Griffo 10/10 ; Hartnid 9/9 ; Ulrich 8/8 ; Lauranna 3/3 ; Thalion 5/5

MO(from first to last on trail): 1: Bog (crouching near trail at least 30-35 feet back from Billy/Knight)/Griffo (off to the ?? side but had almost made it up next to/as close to the front as Bog), 2: Caelvanna (to the ?? side of trail) 3: Thalion (moved into brush on the ?? side of trail), 4. Hartnid/Ulrich (standing together on or near trail), 5. Emm (crouching near trail)/Lauranna (totally obscured in thick brush off the trail)

Emm's eyes widen in terror. This can't end now, we're so close! To Yorn: Away from the brush! To the trail! Grasping the greater mistletoe she recalls the words her Master taught her and begins chanting.

Entangle spell centered 80' north, middle of the invaders' line, hopefully snaring some of the archers. (spell range 80', AOE 20' radius, duration 1 turn)

1 greater mistletoe marked off.

Good roll, Alethan!

Bog catches a glimpse of a huge beast in the fog out of the corner of his eye. Hoping the holy warrior and his companions can take care of it, he decides to close up the ranks with the attacking humanoids.

In order to avoid being in the path of friendly fire, he will stick to the western side of the clearing, moving south about 60' , to put just 20' or so between him and the attackers. He won't throw his spear until the next round, hoping that others with better ranged weapons or area of effect spells can make an impact first.

If an attacker charges him, he will set his spear against the charge.

Looking south Griffo see's the spear wielding Half-Orc move into action In an effort to guard the Half-Orcs flank, Griffo Takes aim on the shapes that appear to be archers beginning with the ones in range of the Half-Orc. He will fire at the humanoid until it falls down at that point he will move to the next target.

Three attacks this round I believe there is a -2 to hit at my current range of about 65 feet. If this is not the case please let me know so i can get that +2 to hit back heh.

To Hit [1d20+5] = 12+5 = 17, Damage with Short Bow [1d6+2] = 5 <-- My macro left out the +2 on damage and I adjusted
To Hit [1d20+5] = 10+5 = 15, Damage with Short Bow [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3
To Hit [1d20+5] = 4+5 = 9, Damage with Short Bow [1d6+2] = 6+2 = 8

Tugging on his cousin's sleeve, Hartnid will attempt to lead his cousin to follow after the wand-wielding elf. Should any enemies seek to engage the magic wielding figure in melee, Hartnid will attempt to interpose himself, striking with his flail.

Thalion pauses for a moment to take in the situation.

He glances first at the large creature... then at the line of small humanoids.

Just as he was about to flip a mental coin to decide upon his next course of action, a brief flash of memory fills his mind.

His face darkens as he scowls. Quietly cursing under his breath, he silently resumes trying to circle around the flank of the small humanoid creatures.

Caelvanna draws a bead on one of the archers amongst the group of dark-colored humanoids to the north. She lets loose on the bow string once her trained eye fixates on the selected target.

A confident grin crosses Caelvanna's face as she lets loose with her first arrow.
To hit with short bow (51-100 feet) [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20
Short bow +2 damage [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6

Her grin, now more menacing than confident, never leaves her face as she lets loose a second arrow (ooc: at the same target, or a second archer if the first shot resulted in a kill).
To hit with short bow (51-100 feet) [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21
Short bow +2 damage [1d6+2] = 3+2 = 5

However, she curses at herself for allowing herself to become too over-confident and is quickly snapped back into reality as she watches her third shot misses long.
To hit with short bow (51-100 feet) [1d20+2] = 8+2 = 10

Re: Encounter on the Coast Trail; end of Surprise Round 1

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: just after midnight)

(End of Surprise Round 1)

The party springs into action as the opportunity to do so is afforded them. The bright light at the front continues to dim, as if being consumed by the darkness.

Emm casts Entangle as close to the middle of the north line of humanoids as possible, apparently capturing at least 8-9 of their number within the spell’s radius, including 2 enemy archers.

Griffo, standing just to the south side of the trail, quickly fires off arrows in rapid succession, dropping one of the two humanoid archers to the far right of the enemy’s southern line with his first shot and injuring the other with his second while his third goes wide. On the north side of the trail opposite the halfling, Caelvanna follows suit, firing three arrows off quickly. Her first and second shots drop both archers to the left side of their northern line and her third shot sails off into the darkness.

Just behind them, the half-elf that had previously melted into the tree by side of the trail, suddenly appears and fires off three arrows towards the southern line, dropping both archers in the center and a humanoid with a spear standing between them. The one burly guard with the longbow, from the duo that are guarding the old man in the traveling seat, fires off two arrows towards the left hand side of the southern line, missing with his first shot and injuring one of the two archers there with the second. The other guard with drawn longsword, continues looking back and forth between the two sides and occasionally at what’s happening to the front while the old man appears to be fumbling with something on his traveling chair. The armored soldier that is standing guard over the young noble looks from side to side to see what’s happening and appears to chug a potion or flask of something.

Bog quickly maneuvers toward the humanoids’ south line, keeping low and to the far right to avoid missile fire from his comrades, and takes up a position about 20 feet away from them behind a thicket. Thalion the Grey has disappeared into the brush to the south side of the trail and can no longer be seen, as has Lauranna at the rear.

Up towards the front, the elf with the funny hat appears to stick the wand back in his beltline and begins making wide, sweeping somatic motions with his free hand. He continues to slowly advance towards the creature forming in the fog, his staff still glowing bright red and letting off angry snapping sounds. The knight with the glowing 2-handed sword raises it above his head and slowly steps forward and to the left, getting just a bit closer. The cousins Rachstaad, weapons ready and alert, move up closer to the front to protect the rear of the elf mage and those facing the unknown menace ahead. There is no sign of Gentleman Billy, the armored dwarf or the cloaked halfling anywhere.

At the rear, in response to Emm’s call, the old man, clutching the small girl to his chest, begins to move out of cover and over towards the druid.

Please declare actions for the next round (Round 2) and I need tkrexx to roll a d6 for the party.

OOC: No party loses known of. At present, there is no visual on Gentleman Billy, the armored dwarf, the cloaked halfling, Thalion or Lauranna.

Enemy casualties consist of:

Northern Line: (at least 6 archer, 18 warrior humanoids seen initially)
- 2 archers, 7 warriors entangled at center of line (by Emm)
- 2 archers dropped to the left (by Caelvanna)

Southern Line: (at least 6 archer, 18 warrior humanoids seen initially)
- 3 archers dropped (1 by Griffo,2 by half-elf in cloak)
- 2 archers injured (1 by Griffo, 1 by burly guard)
- 1 warrior dropped (by half-elf in cloak)

MO(from first to last on trail): 1: Bog (now on the south side of the trail, @ 20 feet from enemy)/Griffo (just off the trail to the south side and forward from his previous position), 2: Caelvanna (just off the trail to the north side) 3: Thalion (?? moved into brush to the south side of the trail and vanished) 4: Hartnid/Ulrich (moved up trail behind the elf and knight), 5. [1d6] = 3

Down! Stay low! Emm shouts to Yorn, worried that she has made him and the child targets for enemy archers. She quickly scans the area and sees no one is near the two except her. Her only hope is a gamble on those she does not know; nearest are the pair of Dwarves. Trying to be heard above the din, she calls: Sons of Moradin, rally! Defend the helpless!

Gripping the oak leaf, she will try a second Entangle spell at the near end of the Humanoid line on the north, centered 40' out, again aiming for archers. Attempting to minimize the number of foes getting onto the trail. If they are not yet 40' away they should enter the AOE and be neutralized, or if closer, I'll adjust the range. Oak leaf range: 40' AOE: 10' radius duration: 5 rounds.

1 oak leaf marked off.

"That makes 2 archers that you can see remaining on right end of line."

As far as Caelvanna can see, there are two enemy archers not entangled on the northern side of the trail, and those will be her targets.

Caelvanna lets loose her first arrow and tracks its flight towards its target as she nocks her next arrow.

To hit with short bow (51-100 feet) [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18
Short bow +2 damage [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4

ooc: If the first target is still standing, it will remain her target. If not, she'll attempt to take out the second archer.
She is less confident in her second shot, but remains hopeful that it will find it's mark (ooc: or miss by less than two ;) )

To hit with short bow (51-100 feet) [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14
Short bow +2 damage [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6
