The Alchemist Lab

#1 Post by tooleychris »

The party leaves the cave and dead wyvern behind and makes their way further north, up the gradual sloping mountain path.
Another two hours passes and the noon day sun beats heavily on you. Up ahead you spot a line of boulders with what appears to be birds feasting on dead corpses!

Craxzus will draw his Short Sword and move quietly around behind the big stones on the left side. As he moves off he will cast "Cloak of night"

the spell fails but you only lose the MP on a critical failure.
edit: you don't lose spells like in AD&D

Ruken, from the distance he is at, tries to determine how long the bodies were dead. "If the bodies are well past their decomposition phase, we may just be dealing with your average carrion feeders. However, if the corpses are fresh... I'm not getting any closer."

Those of you inching closer can see scavenger birds peeling greyish flesh from the bodies which wear furs of various animals. There are 2 broken spears littering the ground. Previous combat is evident.
Ruken has trouble deciding if the flesh is grey with age, because their is ample blood still present and quite red in the sunlight.
From a closer vantage you can see their are at least 3 bodies, although you can only see the legs of one whos torso hides behind a boulder. A fourth body is tucked between some large rocks as well.
Even moving slowly Tyrion has trouble hiding the chink chink sounds of his ringmail armor.

will wait and see if Craxzus recasts spell as he has a different vantage where he was going. Blazeguard?

Eirenaios gets close to the bodies and tries to to find something distinguishable like a symbol on their attire or shields if they have any or if their clothes are more associated with bandits or common folk. He will search the body for anything interesting that might shed a light on the reason of their decapitation. He will check the wounds to try and discern what caused their demise and what weapon or animal could have caused it.

Physik(70): [1d100] = 42
Insight(42): [1d100] = 17

then he will move aside and leave the others to conduct their own investigations while he digs a hole big enough for the bodies.

Thorgrim will cautiously advance and stop behind the rock to his right. He will draw his crossbow and wait until he thinks Craxzus has had time to get close enough and then loose a bolt at the birds. Even if he doesn't hit anything, he figures that will distract them and give Craxzus a better chance to attack.

"These may be fresh kills we are looking at. I advice caution my elven friend; the birds do not seem friendly," He says to Eirenaios in a whisper.

Ruken begins to make his way to some cover (western rock pile and trees), trying to find a good hiding spot so as to be out of the way of combat.

Ruken whispers a warning as Eirenaios moves to examine the bodies. As he advanced most of the birds are startled and fly off with only a few remaining ,eyeing the elf as they feast nervously. The three bodies closest are orcish and the one tucked into the rocks is an elf wearing leathers. A crossbow rests on his lap.
Craxzus casts his spell and moves, hidden, to the left of the bodies and boulders.Thorgrim takes a good vantage spot and aims his crossbow.
Tyrion clanks a little closer, axe at the ready.
Eirenaios stoops to examine the bodies and can finally see around the larger left boulder:

Craxzus rounds the boulders on the right as Eirenaios stifles a squeal and also sees:

The squid headed, caterpillar looking beast lunges toward Eirenaios, its many tentacles reaching out hungrily.

Tentacles attack7 [1d100] = 83 Tentacles attack8 [1d100] = 36
Two of the tentacles slash across the elfs body secreting a gel.

Eirenalos Resistance [1d100] = 82 [1d100] = 70
Eirenaios falls limp to the ground.
Thorgrim quickly changes his aim from the birds to the monster but his bolt misses, clanking off the boulders to the left of Craxzus.

Surprise round over. Round 1 Actions!

Craxzus casts his spell and one of the caterpillar looking creatures begins writhing in pain, squeels escaping its tentacle covered maw.

Resistance roll [1d100] = 57

Ruken remains in his hiding spot.

Throm leaps into action but his hammer misses and slams into a nearby boulder sending dust flying.

Tyrions axe finds it mark, the beasts chitinous shell only absorbing a small amount on the impact before being cleaved. Yellow goo covers the dwarves arms.

Thorgrim has success with his blow as well, severimg several of the things tentacles!

The injured creature grabs Eirenaios' body in its remaining tentacles and begins dragging him away towards the mountain.

The other writhes in agony still.

Round 2 actions!
