Lashingport Chapter One

#1 Post by tooleychris »

Signs have been hung in and about the Capitol city of Lashingport claiming to offer work. Word spreads that a noble has procured land and is looking to clear it for the building of a stronghold. Whispers and rumor hint that this might allow access to the new city of Elizabeth Bay and it's surrounding environs. The city has been off limits except by invitation or labor until now. It's location isn't even known by the general populace.

The day of gathering finally arrives bringing the curious and the adventurous from far corners of the realm.
Over a hundred people gather before the offices of Sirius Max, some merely wanting to see what causes such commotion, others to seek employment.
Image
Max is escorted out of the government building by a knight, 2 guards, and a fourth who appears as nobility.
He steps to a table lined with scrolls and smiles to the crowds. Raising his hands for silence he speaks:
"Hear now the words of this contract drawn by Lord Byron. For those of you unlearned in letters, it is imperative you understand what lies herein before signing! he clears his throat as the crowd settles.
Image
"Proclamation of Intent.
The fore signed doth sweareth allegiance to the words of this document. To serve the lord Byron and his officers in clearing plots of land for the establishment of civilized expansion. 100 Silver Crowns are to be afforded signee per month of service.
As witnessed by Sirius Max."

Image

He places the scroll on the table. "What this means to you, written and unwritten, is that any whom volunteer for this service are obliged to do as ordered by officers of Lord Byron for the purposes of clearing land of any foreign or domestic hostiles. You will be compensated 100 silver per month of productive service. You will not know or speak of your destination, for it is secret. You will reach this land by ship, the first week of which you will not be allowed above deck. If you are easily sickened by ship travel, look elsewhere. At any time after your first month you wish to return to port here, you may on the next available ship returning. As an added incentive, the lord has bid me grant any who service faithfully for the period of 12 months may be granted a small plot of land if the mission succeeds."
He sighs and clasps his hands.
"I cannot express enough the importance for secrecy on your destination. If you are able to somehow discern your destinations location, you are advised to keep it to yourself...at grave penalty. I hope we are of like mind?"
He unrolls another scroll.
"Each volunteer will receive a copy of the fore mentioned document as proof of your employment. I advise you lose it not as you will not be paid without it and are like to be arrested. If you understand and wish to volunteer , please step up, state your name, and place your mark on my copy of the document as well as your own."

The crowd seems to whisper amongst themselves for a bit before a trickle of Volunteers start to leave their mark and collect their copy of the scroll. As the procession dies down the crowd begins to disperse, leaving only 12 who had signed iinto employment.
"This is all then?" Sirius sighs. "Very well." he addresses the remaining. "You're all afforded lodging for the night in the Grey Goose Inn. Providing your scroll to the innkeeper will grant you room and a modest meal. I wouldn't recommend partaking too heavily of spirits as you will be waken early to board the Amberlynn sailing vessel, which is even now being loaded with supplies for Elizabeth Bay, your new port of call. From here it is a three week journey and while you will be fed, rations will be minimal minus what you bring with you. Your first months wages will be granted apon arrival in Elizabeth Bay for provisions. I do recommend you buy such provisions as you deem necessary there as the lord has frozen profit margins in the bay. What you pay for a coil of rope here, you shall also pay there. However, outside of the bay prices are set by demand and greed. Are their any questions? "
the topic is unlocked for questions but this is not officially the start.

"Eh, I gots me a question. " shouts a dark skinned man in leathers.
"Ah, yes...Mister...ah..." asks Sirius.
"Axle'll do." he answers. "There be women there, eh?"
Sirius smiles sadly. "Indeed, Elizabeth Bay is a thriving community, despite the rough surroundings. Several dozen families have been colonizing there for years, many craftsman and women were hired for the needs of the bays growth. Several women have volunteered in the past to take their... professions there and there they remain still. But do not doubt that you will have more than minimal time for fornication or carousing. You, and those before you, are hired for services. If such is not rendered...you are...replaceable. "
"Aye." respond Axle. " 'Services' was what me had in mind." he laughs.
"Indeed." responds Sirius.

The night in the inn is uneventful. There is tension and excitement intermingling among the volunteers. Some chat about rumors, gossip, what they've heard about Elizabeth Bay. Most keep to themselves.

The next morn finds the peoples roused and fed a hearty breakfast of Ham, eggs, and corn mash with sweet apples.
They are then herded and taken to the docks to board a rather large sailing vessel. The AmberLynn.
Image

The living quarters are spacious but spartan. Every passenger has their own locker and hammock. But after a few days of being restricted from above decks, it does become tighter feeling.
Image

As promised, meals are provided twice a day and the volunteers, having grown more aquainted with one another, start to form their own social groups And try rto entertain themselves.Image
The half dozen guards and crew members keep to themselves but the rest share and learn what they will with one another.

And just when the dull edge of boredom threatens to drive into the heart of the passengers...

A guard stumbles down the stairs and shouts: "All HANS ON DECK!"
As Kana makes for the stair he corrects himself: "Sorry lass. Crew only. "
Other guards scramble up deck and Kana asks:What the hells is going on?" as other passengers start to gather.
"We've caught up with a capsized ship." states the guard.
"Oy! Sa whattav it?" asks Malcome the halfling. "Ders bounda be a wrecker two in da oceans."
"Quite right, master halfling. " answers the guard. "But this one has changed course. "
as the last of the crew scrambles on deck the guard adds, eying the passengers: "Your curfew isn't lifted yet. Passengers stay below decks."
He turns to run up the stairs.
HERE'S HOW COMBAT WILL WORK. EVERYONE PLACES THEIR CHARACTER NAME AT THE BEGINNING OF THE POST WITH THEIR DEX SCORE. UNDER THAT GOES DECLARED ACTIONS AND A SKILL ROLL WITH THE SKILL TOTAL SCORE IF APPLICABLE. IF IN MELEE INCLUDE EITHER A DODGE ROLL OR PARRY ROLL WITH THE SKILL SCORE.
EXAMPLE
Axle (16)
Will attack the pirate with his axe (65%) rolls: 1d100=15. Damage roll: 1d6+2=4
Dodge(45%) rolls: 55

You can guage your level of success on each roll with following method:
CRITICAL: 01-05
SPECIAL: equal to 20 percent or less (round up fractions) of skill.
SUCCESS: A D100 result equal to or less than the Adventurer’s percentiles in the skill
FAILURE: A D100 result higher than the Adventurer’s percentiles in the skill
FUMBLE: A D100 result of 99 and 00 if the percentiles in the skill equal 100 or less, or of 00 only if the skill’s percentiles equal 101 or more.

And so it begins: ACTIONS?

Caltus, the Elven Mage (14)

Damnable rules!, Caltus mutters under his breath, as he scoops his book up from the table and makes his way back to his locker.

Will make his way back to his locker and insure he's packed for a possible 'swift disembarking action'.

***Rafo, Dwarf, Ship***

"To hell with these rules! Rafo yells. We been on this boat floating around for days. Now there is a ship out there besides our own and it being viewed as a possible threat. I will not be caught down here, below decks, if there be trouble a brewing."

Turning away from the stairs and rushing to his quarters to grab his gear, Rafo barks out one more complaint. "If there is a trouble starten than I be the one starten it!"

After gathering his supplies, Rafo rushes back toward the stairs. Before ascending the wooden flight of steps toward the top deck he breaths in deeply and relaxes. "Now here I go..."

Malfiac, in his silence, shall remain below deck, following orders. He looks upon the others in their commotion, some more forward with their thoughts then others, actions even speaking louder. Malfiac shall wait, and defend those who listen if need be. He shall make sure he has all his possessions on hand, especially his contract, and then prepares himself (equipping armor and weapon if needed).
Even a child that receives one bit of praise has the ability to excel in a single talent, and those who receive regular encouragement can feel confidence, achieve success, and become leading members of society. Because they don’t believe they are worthless, they don’t need to raise a fist and have vengeance against fate or the world at large… ~Inspector Lunge

"I'll not hide below when a stinking dwarf rushes ahead.!" spits Edario as he strings his bow and slings a strap quiver of arrows. "I'm with you!"

"Wait!" pleads Gera. "I'm excited to see the sun again as well, but we have rules. A contract!"

The halflings come back strapping sword and loading crossbow. "El yes. Now weez atalkin! " says Malcome, heading for the stairs with Silvia.

"Kana! " pleads Gera further "Tell them!"

The sulking woman, Kana, merely waves her away. "Following their rules got me arrested or I wouldn't be here in the first place. Let the dogs have their fun. I care not."

Finally she looks to Thorgrim
"Master dwarf, what say you?"

"Bah, a contract does me no good if I'm at the bottom of the sea.", Thorgrim grunts. "But I imagine there'd be a bonus waiting if we're the ones to turn the tide of battle." With that he grabs his battle axe and stomps after Rafo.

Some of the passengers rush topside and notice the crew are all gathered at the port side of the ship.
One of the guards notices the new arrivals and barks "Hey! Get you back ta the berthing!"
but Captain Alethan countermands him. "Leave them be, Orick. They're up and nothing to be done about it, now."

Image

As the passengers go to the rail they see the cracked hull of a overturned ship. It is indeed heading toward them.
It creeps closer and the tension rises. All attention focused on the hulk when someone yells "BEHIND!"

Turning, those gathered give a collective gasp as they see what has climbed over the starboard side.

The slimy fish things rush forward on flappy feet.

Caltus, the Elven Mage (14)

Caltus will ascend the stairs topside, hopefully not into the middle of the creatures advancing from starboard. If he sees one of the creatures as he nears topside, he will freeze. Otherwise he ends up at the top of the stairs (wherever that is).

Rafos net is poorly thrown landing on the deck in the middle of the advancing Kuo-Toa, who pause to look at it, wondering what it was intended to do, then continue to charge.

Kuoa-Toa 1 attacks Bevil: Spear [1d100] = 37 and Bevil easily sidesteps the thrust countering with his own.
Bevil Attack Long Sword [1d100] = 63b ut the swing is unbalanced and slices wide of the scaly creture.

Kuo-Toa 2 leaps at Thorgrim, long, sharp teeth snapping [1d100] = 75 but the dwarf is too quick for the thing to connect.

Malcome slices at #3 shouting curses [1d100] = 5
Kuo-Toa#3 Dodge [1d100] = 73
and Kuo-Toa#3 nearly dodges into Malcomes blade as it rends into the beast spilling stinking innards on the deck!
"Sufferin da halflin fury now, eh beasty?!" he screams.

Malcomes damage [1d6] = 1+1
Malcomes damage [1d6] = 5+1
Major Wound against Kuo-Toa #3 [1d100] = 99 It slinks to the deck, scrambling in its own gore.

Rafo charges Kuo-Toa2 as it leaps to attack Thorgrim.
Guard Long Sword attack against Kuo-Toa #1 [1d100] = 64 and misses.

Kuo-Toa #6 attacks Axle [1d100] = 74 but the rogue is too quick.

Kuo-Toa #7 attacks Axle with a spear [1d100] = 87 and misses horribly.

Kuo-Toa #4 attacks guard [1d100] = 99 and...
Kuo-Toa #4 fumble [1d100] = 73 ...gets it stuck in the guards shield, which the guard wrenches away with a laugh.
Guard Long Sword attack against Kuo-Toa #4 [1d100] = 83, but misses his own swing in the attempt.

Thorgrims own axe swings skillfully at the surprised Kuo-Toa who brings his spear around to parry
Kuo-Toa #2 Parry [1d100] = 67 far to slow for the attack.
Thorgrims Axe Damage [1d8] = 3 + [1d4] = 4 +2
Thorgrims Major wounds roll [1d100] = 72 His axe severs the Kuo-Toas right hand causing it's spear, and still gripping claw, to slide across the deck..
Caltus sticks his head through the doorway to see the action.

Caltus, The Elven Mage (14)

Damn, that light is bright up here! Caltus exclaims and then turns his attention to the little abominations bounding about on the deck, Finally a chance to exercise a spell out in the wild!

Casting a Sleep spell this round, to take effect first of next, on #7. #6 would be my alternate target if my primary is killed before then. - Sleep, Lev 1, range is Sight, resistance is POW (17) vs. CON, duration is 60 minutes - target's CON.
