Episode 3: Caston's Defense

#1 Post by Norjax »

...

You finish gathering the supplies and field dressing the stag. Your return to Caston is uneventful and your comrade Blixx greets you. He listens to your account of battling the electrified deer with much curiosity. Mysaurus is pleased to receive the bounty of the stag. Caston’s leader indicated that the harvested deer affords you a barter surplus and the foraging mission earns you a trip to the town’s healer.

You enter the hovel of the healer. The room is filled with cages of poultry livestock and a bearded, middle-aged man greets you. He asks you to sit on some stools while he performs a Transference of life energy from the chickens into each of your wounded party members.

Heal Kapok = [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6

Heal Nor-jax = [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3

Heal Bart = [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2

Heal Luke = [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5

Caston’s armorer was able to fabricate three (3) crude breastplates that give a +1 bonus to armor class when worn.

It is late afternoon, and Caston's defense is being finalized. The stake pits have been dug and are being covered.

Do you have any actions to declare before the defense assignments are issued?

Current Hit Points:

Kapok = 48
Nor-jax = 54
Blixx = 38
Frank = 63
Bart = 46
Luke = 43

Blixx Mutant Human

Blixx is amazed by the creature the party returns to the town with and of their swamp-adventure. He breathes a sigh of relief everyone is back in one piece. He will keep diligent watch for the "enemy" and try to obtain a flask of "coffee" from the tavern.

Luke, human form

After the battle and gathering of branches, Luke transforms back to his human form.

He thanks the healer, dons breastplate, prepares for the upcoming battle.

Nor-Jax, MA gorilla

Nor-Jax will just have the blacksmith put a sharp edge on his axe. He'd like to see if a breastplate would fit him as he mostly fights up close and personal- like.

OOC: I think the additional weight would be a detriment to Kapok, especially when there is no sunlight and he moves at half his movement rate. Plus, it would go against his idiom.

Frank, Pure Human

If there's no objections from his fellow party members; Frank will take up a breastplate and strap it on.....

OOC: If somebody else really wants the last one; no problemo!

Your assigned defense zone is shown on the map. You have approximately 50ft. of wall to defend and the green zone indicates your field of fire for missile weapons. Each hex represents 20ft., so consider this when engaging with ranged weapons.

Image

While on the palisade, you are granted a +1 AC bonus against missile attacks from outside the walls. If any attacker gets inside the walls, the AC bonus is negated.

Here is the presumed list of ranged weapons per character. I have added any modifers that affect "to hit" rolls:

Please look this over and let me know if any changes are required.

Luke, human

Luke surveys the land from his wall post, weapons at hand, breastplate strapped on. If he can find any big boulders to bring up, he'll do so, intending on dropping them down on wall scalers. He'll ask the cantina kitchen if they have any boiling grease he can have in a big pot, for the same purpose. Luke feels heroic, like those heroes of old he saw once in a screen show in his youth... who were they? the mighty habbits of minus tyrant?

Blixx Mutant Human

Blixx has a Flintlock with 12 shot and powder Rifle, black powder 1d12 Normal 400 ft./800 ft. However it would be folly to fly while trying to take a shot and reload. Once he spots the enemy he will take to the wall for protection and stability. Would he be able to obtain more powder or shot? Also once the enemy reaches 90' of the wall Blixx will see who is trying to use mental powers.... and then shoot them :)

Frank, Pure Human

Frank thanks Caston for the extra arrows and proceeds to string his Longbow. He then sets out the dozen or so arrows he was given and places them in easy reach along the palisade wall for quick shooting. He makes sure his own quiver of arrows is snug and secure in its spot along his back and he then tests the bow's pull to make sure everything feels alright with his weapon.

Surveying the terrain with a careful eye; he mentally notes landmarks that are about 100 to 120 feet out and then he does the same for landmarks about 50 feet out for so. His plan is to hold fire until opponents are within about 120 feet or so and then start up the barrage; hoping that his aim is truer with his Longbow than it was with his sword against the Electric Elk....

Powder and shot are very rare. There are none available in Caston.

Blixx Mutated Human

Blixx hovers letting the breeze buffet him gently. He is very excited about the upcoming raid and also quite afraid he could let everyone down. The blasted Sun with it's harsh light Albinism has made it even more difficult to scout lately. Blixx hopes the Ant Lord will try his assault in the cool hours of night. Night Vision He checks the action on his musket, and affixes a strip of cloth on the wall, so he can gauge the wind later. He has to make every one of his 12 shots count.

Kapok, Mutant Plant

Kapok stands still as a statue on the rampart of the wall, looking the part as much as feeling it. Only his eyes scan the area before them, jumping to signs of movement here and there as the wind picks up bits of trash and blows it around.

He has selected visual markers that indicate ranges where he know he will have a better chance with his bow (he won't fire until his target is within medium range). His plan is to alternate between firing his bow and using his mental attack on what appear to be leaders or even the big Antman himself.

Nor-Jax, MA gorilla

Nor-jax uses his telepathy to help lift large rocks to the battlements to later drop on the attackers. He then then takes a place on the battlement next to his pile of spears, shuffling impatiently and occasionally scratching under his new breast plate. He tries to remain vigilant but more times than not he finds himself absent-mindedly staring at a cloud, or a tree, or a rock.

Bart, Mutant Human

Bart, eyes shut, appears to be sleeping standing up, a bolt notched and his arm crossed, cradling his crossbow.
Every few seconds a sharp click emits from between his snores.

...

Kapok, Luke, Frank, Nor-jax and Bart take their positions on the wall and anxiously await the upcoming battle.

Luke and Nor-jax find 3 large rocks each (no boulders) and Luke acquires a medium container (5-gallons) of boiling grease, but isn’t sure how to keep it heated.

Tension runs high among the residents of Caston, and everyone busily prepares through the afternoon and into the evening. Blixx takes up position flying outside Caston’s walls 30ft. in the air surveying the defensive perimeter with his night vision. To the limits of the map.

The wind picks up and the torchlights inside the walls flicker violently. Cloud movement under a half moon plays shadows across the ground. Sentries on other parts of the wall shout out false alarms adding to everyone’s anxiety. A light, possibly a flaming arrow, rises from the west and arc into the northern sky. Several horns, seemingly all around the town, blare out from the distance. Hollering, babbling and animal shrieks grow louder as the horn blaring increases in frequency.

“It shouldn’t be long now,” says a gruffy-looking human named Kragg. He is the only Caston resident on your section of the wall. “The Ant Lord wants us to know he’s attacking, hoping we will break with fear. We won’t give him that satisfaction, will we?” Kragg appears to say this more for his sake than to inform you.

Flying over the field outside Caston, Blixx begins to see shapes moving side to side at the limits of his vision. The dancing shadows make it hard to tell direction, but several shapes slow down and begin moving towards Caston. Shrieking sounds emanate from the shapes and Blixx sees five giant, chicken-looking creatures make a beeline towards the northwest wall. Sensing no mental powers within range, he flies back to Caston signaling the defenders and taking up his position on the wall.

Unless otherwise indicated, those who are holding fire to a certain range have declared their actions. Those who have not delayed their attacks will fire when targets reach maximum range.

Kapok, Mutant Plant
Mind Thrust, (3d6 damage, WP 15)

As soon as he has a visual of the beasts, Kapok attempts his Mind Thrust attack on the one farthest ahead.

OOC: This attack does significantly more damage than an arrow, so he'll use it every other round when possible.
