Keep on Keeping on; The Battle

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

Back To The Front
Go Time!
Evening, Partly Cloudy, Warm

Carl follows Othrod as commanded, they sneak up to the tower and wait for Thamansa's fires to start burning. Ondrake goes along too, ready to run around to the front gates where he will make his grand entry.

Kermut, Horsefly, and Shozbot stand at the opening in the secret tunnel, also waiting till the fires start before trying the trapdoor into the stables.

Thamansa flies up into the night sky, staying out of the torchlight below. She drops her gourds of oil onto any rooftops that she can see are clearly wooden and will ignite quickly. After she drops her first few handfuls of dried gourds, that shatter and spray around quite well from her elevated distance, she gets one a little too close to a well lit entrance, hitting a lamp and igniting with a small burst of flame. Any people nearby start to panic, rushing to extinguish the dangerous fire before it can spread any more. The flying bugbear dives back down to the others to collect her second armful of oil filled gourds, redy to splash the tops of the towers next. (If that is still her plan, please indicate which towers she wants to hit first. Thanks!)

Thamansa want to make sure the fire is wide-spread. Since it appears that only one building is currently ablaze, she'll first firebomb the other courtyard buildings. Then she'll target the Southwest blue-light tower on her third sortie.

Kermut

Boredom sets in quickly as they wait for the keep to become a blazing inferno. Rooting around in his nose, he pulls out a greenish-yellow glob. Inspecting it briefly, he pops it into his mouth and sucks it off his filthy claw.

Othrod

Whispering to Carl, "We got flames, time to act." Seeing flicking light from the inner yard Othrod starts sneaking up to the cracked section, motioning for Ondrake to start for the front gate.

Once up to the crack section Othrod uses the ring on the section that looks weakest.

Ondrake squeezes his grip on his ‘club’ and nods eagerly. “Finally!” He starts towards his front gate.

Go Time! Round 1
Evening, Partly Cloudy, Warm

With no real starting point discussed, the invasion starts off with a bit of confusion. Thamansa retrieves a few more incendiary grenades to drop on the houses and buildings, causing the fires to spread rapidly. When she flies a bit close to the towers however, she starts to hear cries from the guards and soldiers, followed by the telltale whizzing of arrows flinging past her in the dark sky. It appears that at least some of the guard posts have spotted the pesky bugbear in mid flight.

Kermut keeps his protein levels high as he waits for the order to attack. Horsefly uses his goblin trickery to speak with his bag of snakes, instructing them not to bite him when he reaches in for them. "Sure, sure. Just put us in a nice new area with lots of food for our babies and we will be happy." Shozbot looks crazed and unstable as he waits his turn up the ladder.

Othrod nods to Ondrake who takes off running for the front gate, sticking close to the base of the wall as he circles around the front of the keep. The bugbear leader looks at the minotaur next once he spots flames in the inner courtyard. He gets the pair into position and points his new ring at the dilapidated tower wall, willing it to move. At first, the ring does nothing, enraging the huge bugbear. But once he feels the magic of the ring surge, his hope for victory is quickly restored. The ring pulses and glows, its magic power taking a full minute to build. Once the long wait is over, a powerful magical force that the bugbear cant explain rushes from the ring, slamming into the tower's base with the force of a tidal wave. The massive tower moves in towards the courtyard, hitting the central wall as it starts to come apart. It topples back and forth for a second, causing Horny Carl to throw his arms up as if they would protect him from the collapse. The panic from the people trying to put out the fires seems to escalate in a hurry as the tower begins to fall in upon them.

The trio in the tunnel hear the tower start to topple as the sound of breaking rock echoes throughout the secret passage.

The tower is obviously going to fall in, it just takes a while, apparently. :)

Thamansa collects another load of firebombs, casts Invisibility on herself, and flies over to the blue-light tower to sneak in and take a look around (assuming she can run Flight and invisibility at the same time).

Wait a little more to let everyone go where others cause distraction, the gnoll says in Orcish. Then we sneak in. Start killing, he says with a fang-baring grin.

Go Time! Round 2

As if Thamansa's fire wasn't enough for the humans of the keep to worry about, once the tallest tower begins to fall, utter pandemonium breaks out inside the walls. Watching as the huge stones start to crumble and fall, the monsters outside revel in the screams of horror coming from beyond the walls. The tower sways back and forth for a second, not sure which way it should fall. The bugbear leader is perplexed when he doesn't hear any screams coming from inside the tower he was sure must have been filled with guards. Loud popping noises begin to sound as the tower implodes upon itself, falling almost straight down as it tips towards the inner courtyard. One by one the floors of the tower collapse in on themselves as it drops, revealing support beams that had already been cut. Othrod wonders if he has been set up when he doesn't see one guard fall to his death inside the maelstrom of falling stone.

The tower eventually crashes into the courtyard, the huge rocky debris crushing several humans as they scatter for cover from the now breached outer wall. Though the effect wasn't as destructive as he hoped, likely because the tower had already been totally abandoned, Othrod and Horny Carl can now see directly into the ground floor of the keep. The destruction and the debris field the fallen tower causes inside is rather massive, killing at least a couple of the guards inside in the process.

Thamansa makes herself invisible, retrieves her last 3 oil bombs, and heads to the corner tower with the blue light inside. It seems that her goblin friend wasn't kidding when he told her that the upper floor was clear, as she finds only an empty round stone room at the top of the tower. The room has a bright blue light illuminating the balcony from the back wall. The light is obviously magical in some way and appears to be coming from a crystal ball sitting on a stand at the back wall there. The lanky Bugbearess doesn't see any doors or hatches in the floor, walls, or ceiling of this room.

Ondrake takes advantage of the noise and confusion distracting the guards on the walls as he rushes around to the makeshift front gate of the keep. There he finds one lone guard outside the iron bars set up as a weak barrier to prevent unwanted access to the inner courtyard. The guards on the walls and catwalks all seem to be looking at the destruction inside, but this lone guard spots the giant coming his way and nearly soils himself at the sight. He attempts to get out a verbal warning to the others nearby, but the noise of the starting battle swallows up his frightened alarm.

Shozbot seems anxious to get up the ladder to the fight when Kermut cautions those inside the tunnel to be patient for a bit longer yet. They hear the tower fall outside, echoing throughout the stone walls around them.

In Orcish, the gnoll urges the others to take action. Sound like big dumb guys making trouble. Now, time for us to sneak and murder humans! I go last, close door behind me.

Themansa stands on the balcony overlooking the Keep, taking a moment to appreciate her handiwork. Does she hear screaming? How many humans are in evidence? Is the fire spreading nicely?

She goes back inside to inspect the crystal ball. Does she have any insight into it's magic? Is it merely a continual light spell? Something more? Just in case it is trapped, she does not touch it herself, but pulls out a sack and prepares to scoop it up if she feels that is a safe course of action.

Horsefly,
The old goblin has been fidgety, waiting for the fun to start. He's the second one up the ladder, scampering like a monkey.

Thamansa takes a moment to admire her handiwork from an elevated position on the blue balcony. She can see her fires spreading as a dozen or so humans run around in the dusty ruined carnage trying to put it out. And yes, there is plenty of screaming to be heard.

Shozbot throws open the hatch at the top of the ladder to even more panic and confusion above. He enters the stables and the animals inside freak out. The orc doesn't let that bother him in the least, charging over towards an opening in one wall that leads out to an open courtyard. Horsefly quickly climbs the ladder next, sticking his head up through the hatch to a very strange sight. The goblin doesn't see any horses like one might find in a normal stable. These animals are all horse sized, but one has black and white stripes, another looks deformed, with 2 huge humps atop its back. And so on...... Kermut mounts the ladder and climbs up behind the goblin shaman. There is a small stairway which leads up to a normal wooden door at the back of the ground floor level of the stables.

Othrod and Horny Carl stand on the ledge just outside the smashed walls and newly destroyed tower as dust and small debris rain down upon them. The bugbear is hesitant to enter the keep, wondering if something is wrong. As they stare into the destruction, a human voice calls out from the top of the lower wall. "MONSTERS! There are monsters at the outer wall!!! They are coming in where the tower fell!!!!!" The pair can see movement through the dusty chaos inside. They hear the sound of a crossbow fire as Carl takes one bolt to his shoulder from somewhere on the wall. 2 dam

Ondrake smiles as he crushes in the skull of the poor lone guard at the gate with his magic leg bone club, killing him easily with one heavy blow. He sees another guard just on the other side of the makeshift gate, and 2 more appear on the catwalk 20 feet above him. That pair fire crossbows at the giant, but both of the bolts fly wide. These men also begin shouting about giant monsters coming through the front gates. Ondrake spots a small human sized door in one of the grates. None of the bars or grates look like they would stop the giant if he wanted to tear through them to access the inner courtyard.

Thamansa turns around to investigate the blue ball behind her when suddenly a thin ray of light appears in the room. The tiny beam is coming in from somewhere outside. It enters through the balcony and hits the blue ball directly in its center. The Bugbearess has absolutely no idea what might be happening in here now.

Screams of anguish begin to ring out above the din, warning all around of the immanent invasion.

Othrod

Othrod takes off at a run, heading to run up the rubble and onto the wall. Once on top of the wall he will try to take out the nearest guard and work his way to the opposite tower.

If needed.
