Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Darkstar nods in appreciation at Greystone. He thinks to himself, "what will I do in the future, where does my path lay?"
When offered the choice of mount he at first moves to join the Owls and Min before narrowing his eyes and saying Stag.
He wants to see this Redhorn up close.

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Before they leave, Greystone strips off his leather armour and buckler and puts on the Bracers AC6 and Thumb Ring of Protection +1.
He offers up the potions of speed and invisibility to any of the party members who could use them and haven't taken much else by way of loot. If nobody wants them, he'll hold on to them.
He slips the Dagger +2 from the woman onto his belt, removes his Knife +1, and then offers the Knife +1 and the other Dagger +2 up to anyone who wants them.
OOC: He will now wield long sword in one hand and Dagger +2 in his off-hand. His high DEX (18) and the bonus of the dagger should reduce his penalties to zero for both weapons, which will leave him with a +1 To Hit for each due to high STR.

Yes, you have them!
The journey to the stone archway is swift by air, by land, and by magic. While most of the companions travel with the Lynx clan, Darkstar travels with the Stag. Redhorn, the Stag leader, is tall for an elf and bristling with muscle and sinew. He barks orders to his tribe from atop a huge stag, and they follow without hesitation. He gives Darkstar a brief glance before leaving the great cypress trees and then dismisses him as easily.
The three clans arrive at the stone archway almost at the same time, with the Lynx elves arriving first, then the Owls, then the Stags. All is quiet in the glade > the dead oak is still there as is the rest of the trees and foliage from the last time the archway was opened. The Keepers waste little time spreading out their clansmen as they stride forward to the archway.
The sun is directly above the glade as the three place their hands upon the stone archway and begin to recite an ancient elven script:
By the Lady, by the Light, by the powers of Day and Night
The Keepers Three invoke the ancient Rite
To banish Darkness, to banish Evil, to banish Demon and Devil
We hold steadfast in our Fight
The Keepers Three invoke the ancient Rite
When the script is first recited, the stone archway shudders with small pieces of stone literally rolling off of it. When the script is recited a second time, the archway groans like that of a giant waking from slumber, and the trees around the glade sway and rock as if a mighty wind is blowing through them...but there is no wind, only the chanting of the Keepers and the beating of your hearts.
When the script is recited for the third and final time, the archway blasts forth light, causing those around the cry out and shield their faces! The Keepers are shouting the words to the rite and there is an ear-piercing keening coming from the stone they are touching. A keening which turns into their screams!!
The archway splits and bursts...sending shards of rock zinging through the glade. Those nearby are find themselves bleeding from tiny scrapes (1 hp) and their ears are ringing from a high keening sound. But where the stone as burst and fallen, there remains a shimmering portal...a last desperate attempt of the forces of darkness to not loosen their hold on these woods.
Suddenly, blackened tentacles erupt from the portal, grabbing many of those standing around...including the Keepers! The air is filled with an unholy stench of decay and filth as the slimy, squid-like appendages grasp and grab, dragging more than a few of the unlucky elves back to whatever hell spawned it!
Many of you find yourselves caught up in the battle...fighting for your lives!
ACTIONS!!
Winter is coming...

Also, forgot his elven bonus for the longsword, so he'll still keep his +2 bonus To Hit with that. So no loss on the main weapon and an additional attack per round. If nobody wants the other +2 Dagger, he might consider dual-wielding them, instead, to ensure there are no problems with hitting certain creatures that can only be hit by magical weapons, but I'd prefer it if someone else put it to use.AC: 1 (Bracers AC6, Ring of Protection +1, DEX)/5 (Bracers/Ring)

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
New weapon aside, Greystone would rather not engage the tentacles at close range, if possible.
"Everyone stay clear of the tentacles and fire with your bows!" he shouts as he pulls sheaf arrows out of his quiver and fires them at the tentacles in rapid succession.
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 17+3 = 20
Damage, Sheaf Arrow [1d8] = 5
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 13+3 = 16
Damage, Sheaf Arrow [1d8] = 6
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23
Damage: 16 (Critical Hit = automatic double maximum damage)
(Or does it do double the rolled damage? I couldn't tell from the rule. If that is the case, let me know and I'll roll it.)

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Dalivere quickly moves away from the tentacles and lets the elves launch there arrows. he waits and watches the portal waiting for something more than tentacles.
Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Lysander draws his sword and, praying that the others arrows are true, hacks at the closest tentacles that is gripping an elf (preferably a Keeper since they might be more helpful in the fight)
to hit [1d20] = 1, two handed damage [2d8] = 7doh! hopefully i didn't just cleave an elf in half

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Thurgrum will swing at one of those tentacles if it is close by; otherwise he will help pull others out of danger.
sure hope he doesn't have to swing:
[1d20] = 1 to hit
[1d20] = 7 save if need be

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Not wanting to be in the way and already sarcastically nervous that all hell was going to break loose regardless of their greater numbers, Purvan decides that he and his fellow investigator should be well in the back ranks behind cover and simply observe the proceedings. He has his bow to hand and an arrow readied but hopes it won't be needed. Yeah, right...
When the archway splits and bursts, Purvan is already pushing Thaleese down on the ground behind the tree and out of the line of fire to protect her from being hit by any potential ricochets. When he chances another look and sees the black tentacles of death lash out from hell through the shimmering portal, his half-breed blood near freezes in his veins. Seeing the Keepers in trouble snaps him out of his momentary trance, and he moves out from behind cover, calling out to his human companion for action!
"Leesa, the elven elders are in trouble! We have to help!" Purvan cries as he brings his bow up, sights in on the unlikely target and begins firing arrows at the creature...
To Hit: short bow (+2 Dex bonus/-3 non-proficient penalty) [1d20-1] = 5-1 = 4 (miss), Damage [1d6] = 3
To Hit: short bow (+2 Dex bonus/-3 non-proficient penalty) [1d20-1] = 15-1 = 14 (hits AC6), Damage [1d6] = 4
OOC: marking off 2 arrows; had a couple of questions:
Q1: did anyone/everyone in the party take 1hp damage from the flying shards of portal?
Q2: was Purvan able to acquire more arrows at the Owl clan village before they departed on the mission?

Yes and yes!Argennian wrote:Q1: did anyone/everyone in the party take 1hp damage from the flying shards of portal?

All hell breaks loose in the dead glade as the tentacled horror writhes about snatching elves and either pulling them into the portal or ripping them apart! The chanting of the Keepers has turned into screaming while waves of eldritch power burst from them and into to the stone archway.
The companions, and the remaining elves who have some of their senses, fling arrows and themselves into the fray to help the Keepers. Greystone's arrows are the most deadly, managing to "deaden" at least one of the tentacles while causing another to release its hold on one of the Stag elves. Thurgrum and Lysander drop their weapons...and lose them as tentacles grab them and threaten to crush their bodies.
Tentacles grip the stone archway as the devilish beast attempts to pull itself through. A loud moaning sound bursts from the portal and the Keepers intensify their chanting. But from the looks of things, it may not be enough. Until...
The glade is suddenly bathed in greenish light as a being a pure power strides forward > it is the Lady of the Forest! Her robes are flowing ribbons of diaphanous silk and she is wreathed in ivy and thorns with a staff in one hand and a blazing sword in the other. She has not come to soothe and comfort...she has come to fight!
"STAND WITH ME, MY CHILDREN! PROTECT THE KEEPERS! THE DARKNESS SHALL NOT PREVAIL THIS DAY!"
The Lady of the Forest charges into the mass of tentacles, cleaving them asunder with her sword and blasting them with the power from her staff, summoning the forest itself to come alive and fight for her! The elves shout until they are hoarse, joining their goddess in the fray, overcome with battle lust. Thaleese screams a battle cry, pushes away from Purvan, and charges after the Lady of the Forest, slashing this way and that, trying to get to the goddess' side.
The glade shudders under the tide of battle as the elves and the tentacled horror fight and die, scream and cleave their way along. The Lady of the Forest stands in the crumbling archway as the Keepers, seeing their goddess, intensify their chanting, pouring everything they have into their work.
Suddenly, the stone archway begins to burst apart! A few pieces at first, then more and more, swirling into the vortex created by the beast attempting to come through. The Lady of the Forest drives the beast backward with a bolt of lightning that shakes the trees and temporarily deafens those in the glade. And the beast begins to retreat!
But the vortex it leaves in its wake begins to draw those closest into its embrace. "CLEAVE TO ME! SAVE YOURSELVES, MY CHILDREN!"
The Lady of the Forest stomps her feet into the ground and her legs become trunk-like trees as she roots herself to keep from being pulled into the vortex. Several elves grab onto her robes and legs, holding on for dear life. The Keepers cry out as elves grab them attempting to keep them from being sucked into their doom. Thaleese is caught up in the vortex as well as Min and Tohmal, who are holding onto their father, Celadon, crying out for help!
Time is fleeting > only a few seconds remain to save them...
Winter is coming...
Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
"Darkstar," Greystone shouts, "use your arrow from the Lady! And shoot true!"
He fires three more arrows into the tentacles attacking the Lady of the Forest.
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 7+3 = 10 +1 short range = 11

Damage, Sheaf Arrow [1d8] = 8 (If it hits...)
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 6+3 = 9 +1 short range = 10

Are Lysander and Thurgrum still being grappled by tentacles?
Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
In the background away from the bloody melee Dalivere thinking quickly weaves the words to one of his new spells.
He will cast his Web anchoring it between two trees, between the vortex and the forest elf spirit woman, to catch any elves that cannot hold on.

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
Darkstar hears Greystone's cry. He had completely forgotten about the gifted arrow from the Lady. With a cry he yanks off his quiver and searches to find the magical arrow.
He finds it, nocks it and with a silent prayer to his father takes careful aim at the hell spawned tentacles. He lets the arrow fly.
[1d20+4] = 16+4 = 20[1d6] = 6
With his arrow cast he then will move to help Min and Tohmal save Celadon.

Re: Neverwinter Woods > To Find the Keepers
"NO!!" Purvan screams as he throws his bow down and rushes to save Thaleese. At the moment, he cares naught for his own welfare, the mission or what will happen with the elves. All he cares about is her. In a cold and heartless world, she's the only real, true love he's ever known.
Once he grabs hold of her, the half-elf will do anything and everything he can to pull her out of the vortex. He'll trying to anchor himself to the Lady of the Forest with his legs & feet if he can. But no matter what happens, he will not let go of her...
