Lysander, Paladin

Lysander whispers, "Oggle! Oggle where are you?". He waits a moments and listens for anything. Me returns to the platform which connects to the rope bridge and again looks for the dwarf.

Lysander sees nothing when returning to the platform and looking out over the bridge, but Jase finds a spot of blood here and there, along with some footprints, that leads to the northern door. Peering through the door, you see the following:

Ancient frescoes decorate the walls of this room, which might be octagonal. It's difficult to be sure of this from your vantage point because walls partition the room. The art is not of the sort customary for a king's tomb. Each of the interior walls that you can see shows images of men and women of many races carousing in a tavern. The outer walls near you depict a gold dragon defeating a red dragon. To the right and left are statues, one in the image of a beautiful princess and the other shaped like a knight ready for battle, sword raised and shield readied.

There is no sign of Oggle...but as you stand there looking into the door, you think you hear the sounds of something (or someone) being dragged across the floor - it comes from behind the walled partitions.

Lysander, Paladin

Certain that it is Oggle being drug away, the paladin rushes past the partitions. Lysander assumes he is heard due to the heavy armor he wears, so he makes to attempt to move slow or silent.

ooc: Moving in a NE direction assuming Lysander is the blue dot in the SW.

"Wait on us, ye damn fool!" Thurgrum hisses as Lysander goes charging off, sword in one hand, torch in the other. And no sooner has the paladin disappeared around the first partition, that the sounds of fighting are heard.
Surprise roll: [1d10] = 2

Lysander runs around the first partition and arrows start flying toward him out of the shadows! Hobgoblins attack: [1d20] = 10, [1d20] = 15, [1d6] = 5, [1d6] = 4 One glances off his helm, while the second arrow punches into his thigh all the way to the bone! (4 pts)
Turning his torch toward his attackers, Lysander spies two hobgoblins quickly trying to reload their bows. Suddenly, two more rush past him on his left and engage Thurgrum and Jase with well-honed blades. Thurgrum's shield deflects one sword, but Jase is not so fortunate, as a hobgoblin blade opens his chest and gut with a hard blow. Hobgoblins attack: [1d20] = 3, [1d20] = 19, [1d8] = 4, [1d8] = 6

Lysander rushes to Thurgrum and presses the fight from the dwarf's side, cutting down the hobgoblin attacking the Dwarven priest with a swipe of his bastard sword. Free of a foe, Thurgrum turns on the hobgoblin trying to kill Jase, and smashes it in the side of the head with his hammer, knocking it to one knee. Jase quickly drives his longsword in the hobgoblin's back, killing it.
Thurgrum & Jase attack: [1d20] = 16, [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5, [1d20] = 17, [1d8] = 1

The young ranger jerks his sword free and steps aside as the hobgoblin falls face first to the floor, but then a black-fletched arrow punches through the ranger's thigh and he joins the hobgoblin on the floor, howling in pain! H2 attack: [1d20] = 17, [1d6] = 2

Edit: I goofed in my previous post, attributing damage to Thurgrum instead of Jase. Now, it is correct.

Lysander charges the hobgoblin as it tries to refit another arrow...but it never will again as the paladin slashes it across the face and chest with his sword and then skewers it for the death blow.

Breathing hard, Lysander and companions hear no other sounds in the tomb...but they know that at least one hobgoblin archer is still unaccounted for...

The paladin looks to Thurgrum, "See to Jase". He then moves to the north and searches behind all of the partitions for Oggle and the hobgoblin.

Lysander checks the partitions...and when he rounds the farthest one to the north, an arrow smashes the wall beside his head...revealing the last Hobgoblin who shot at him earlier. H1 attack: [1d20] = 4, [1d6] = 3

The True God seems to hear your battle cry because you cut down the hobgoblin with a mighty slash of your sword! There are no other foes visible and the double doors are open. In your torchlight, you see some blood smears on the floor...

The man calls out for his companion, "Oggle!"

He turns his attention to the blood smears, following them with hopes of locating the dwarf.

There is no response to Lysander's call, so he hurries forward down a wide corridor to a door up ahead. He hears the labored breathing of Thurgrum and Jase not far behind him. He also hears Thrugrum say in a loud whisper, "That boy is gonna be the death of me if he don't slow down!"
You see more blood at the base of the door at the end of the corridor and you easily push it open to reveal a rather large room, the floor of which is actually below your position (red square on map). A ladder descends 15 feet to the floor below, and this is what you see:

A balcony on the north wall overlooks this wide room, which is lower and cooler than the previous areas you've explored, and a steep staircase leads from the balcony's west side into the chamber. Atop that stairway is a closed stone door. Swiftly flowing water runs in a canal that flows east to west through the area, and the moisture has made the room damp, the walls and floor slick with malodorous subterranean fungus. A narrow bridge crosses the canal at the foot of the stairs from the balcony. Flanking the canal on the north and south are rows of statues depicting shieldbearing soldiers saluting with their drawn swords. On the south side of the canal, two of the statues are shattered. Nearby lie the bodies of two humanoids.

Lysander stops, knowing he can't go any further without aid. He feels helpless with Lewis having fallen in combat, Oggle gone missing, and Jase nearly killed. He looks from the room back to Thurgrum, "There are two lying on the floor ahead. Hurry."

When the two catch up he'll cautiously approach the bodies.

After Thurgrum and Jase catch up, the trio descend the stairs and approach the bodies. Suddenly, the water in the canal begins to swirl...and take shape!

A graceful serpent of clear water rises from the canal, making a sound that resembles bubbling speech. It seems to say, "More intruders. Leave this place the way you came, or face the price of your folly, as have those before you."

Jase backs a few steps away, holding his sword, and Thurgrum holds up his hands and likewise takes a step back. "What you want to do here, boy?" he asks Lysander.

Lysander, Paladin

The paladin looks to Thurgrum and resonds, "We'll try and talk".

Lysander stands before the watery guardian and salutes it with respect. "It is not my intent to intrude, but a calamity has fallen upon the tombs above and I am bound to determine the cause. While investigating, an ally of ours was accosted and taken this way. Would you aid in his safe return?"

The strange elemental swirls in the canal, looking at each of you in turn and then speaks again. "If you pursue those who have thwarted me, good luck on your quest. While two others distracted me, the minions of Xeron took your ally through the northern door. As you can see, the others met their deaths. Now, begone."
"Good enough for me," Jase mutters, but Thurgrum grunts as he inspects the bodies of the two hobgoblins on the floor. "They be cold as ice in death," he muses, pilfering their bodies, and turning up two glass vials of blue liquid and a large bag of jewelry. "Likely pilfered from the tombs," Thurgrum says.

"May fortune be upon you, guardian", the paladin says to the elemental. He races to the northern door in order to pursue the kidnappers. "Hurry, Thurgrum. Hurry, Jase. We must not delay".

Nice job, Fearghus! With all that you've done thus far since entering the tomb - helping out, healing, defeating monsters either with sword or word, and leading the group, you've earned enough XP to advance to 2nd level! Please adjust your sheet accordingly.

With the moisture in the room, the door at the top of the stairs is difficult to open, but Lysander puts his shoulder to it, and with Thurgrum helping, the two manage to open it.

This area is a hall stretching from the southeast to the northwest. Statues along the eastern wall represent different figures, and each one is placed in front of a vault door. The nearest portrays a human wizard, holding her staff aloft. Second is a dwarf cleric brandishing a symbol of Moradin. The third and fourth are twin elves, one an archer aiming a bow and the other a warrior wielding a rapier and dagger. Statues to the east and west of the northern stone door appear to be made of black onyx. Depicting human warriors, they hold halberds crossed over the door. A single stone door is set near the center of the western wall.
