All six Hobgoblins react pretty much as one would expect > raised weapons, braced for combat, jaws set. The Hobgoblin leader sniffs the air and takes a good look at Nokrugh. "Illneval's avatar? Horse shit! Prove it or you come with us!"
The other two Hobgoblins can be seen leading the half-orc's horse back up the hill, one on either side, holding onto the bridle.

Nokrugh tilts his head back and starts roaring in almost uncontrollable laughter at his lousy idea. "What in Illneval's name was I thinking" he says to himself. Moments later eyes wet from laughter, he finally pulls himself together. Slowly approaching the leader the smile on his face is replaced by one that leaves no doubt to his intentions. Eyes locked on the leader he takes his time to revel in the fury swirling in him like a vortex. Muscles swollen and twitching he draws his sword and charges the leader shouting "ILLNEVAL TAKE YOU!"

From the Complete Fighter's Handbook: At any time, the Berserker may choose to Go Berserk. This isn't an instantaneous process—he must spend a little time to "psych himself up." It takes a full turn (ten combat rounds) to Go Berserk. In that time, the character is growling, moaning, uttering imprecations . . . it's impossible to be quiet when trying to Go Berserk. He may also be fighting during that time, meaning that he can start to Go Berserk on the round the fight begins, fight for ten full rounds, and then be Berserk on the eleventh round.
From the DMG: A round is approximately one minute. Ten combat rounds equal a turn (or, put another way, a turn equals 10 minutes of game time).
A full turn hasn't passed since you first sighted the Hobgoblins - they were only 90 feet away when you first saw them. Plus, you didn't declare your intentions to go berserk. Instead, you tried to hide and keep quiet, using your horse for a diversion. So, Nokrugh is not berserk...yet. But that first attack is a damn good one!
rtdersch wrote:"ILLNEVAL TAKE YOU!"
The Hobgoblin leader raises his sword as Nokrugh attacks, but the Half-Orc is faster and stronger and his bastard sword takes the Hobgoblin's head clean off, spraying its companion's with gore!
For a couple of seconds, the other Hobgoblins are too stunned to move, then one gives a battle cry and they attack! Three come at Nokrguh trying to impale him with spears, but his sword whirls and he ducks and dodges, and manages to avoid all three!

OOC: Darkstar can attack now!

Round 2:
Nokrugh laughs and attacks again, but this time it is his sword that is knocked aside, as the hobgoblins converge on him. But Nokrugh is fast and strong and with Illneval's blessings, he avoids all three spears again. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4284512/
However, the two Hobgoblins that went after his horse, are now behind him...with nets. And Nokrugh feels the weighted cords fall over him completely, and his sword is tangled...and he realizes he is in real trouble now!

Need attack rolls from Darkstar for two rounds and a Strength check from Nokrugh!

Darkstar is amazed at the fury and speed of the half orcs initial attack and he switches targets to the other hobgoblins now that the leader is dead.
Too tired to move Darkstar fires at maximum velocity hoping to use surprise to his advantage.

Attack 1:
[1d20+4] = 16+4 = 20[1d6] = 5

Attack 2:
[1d20+4] = 1+4 = 5[1d6] = 6

Attack 3:
[1d20+4] = 13+4 = 17[1d6] = 6

Attack roll and dmg are both in each roll.

Feeling the net begin to weigh him down he knows that struggling will only make it worse and that it needs to come off quickly or he's dead! He grabs one side of the net and lifts doing his best to not get tangled in it. Lifting and swinging the net around he attempts to entangle the three hobgoblins with spears.

They wanted to see proof that Nok was Illnevals "avatar?" Well...I couldn't make this next part up.

Str Check:[1d20] = 0

Can't believe you made me re-roll that. Not quiet as good but good enough:

Str Check part deux: [1d20] = 2

As the Hobgoblin leader's head leaves a bloody arc through the air, an arrow shaft whistles by catching the second Hobgoblin in the neck, spinning it around...until another arrow pierces its skull, dropping it dead. A third arrow thunks into a tree high over the head of the third spear-wielding Hobgoblin.
The three Hobgoblins with swords, turns and tries to find the hidden archer, while the other two Hobgoblins (who retrieved the horse) continue their attacks on Nokrugh.
rtdersch wrote:Feeling the net begin to weigh him down he knows that struggling will only make it worse and that it needs to come off quickly or he's dead! Can't believe you made me re-roll that.

The re-roll was justified because it's not possible to get a "0" on a d20 even with a glitchy dice-roller.

ROUND 3

When Nokrugh swings the net from his shoulders, he is somewhat surprised to see only two remaining "spear-goblins" standing in front of him - the other lies on the ground, dead by arrows. With a grunt, he hurls the net at the Hobgoblins, missing the creatures, but entangling one's spear in the thick cords. Nokrugh attacks w/net: [1d20-4] = 14-4 = 10
The two Hobgoblins (who initially threw the nets) draw swords and attack. But one stumbles and misses by several feet, while Nokrugh's armor turns the blade of the second. Hobgoblins attack Nokrugh: [1d20] = 2, [1d8] = 7, [1d20] = 13, [1d8] = 2
While one of the Hobgoblins struggles to free its spear from the net, the other spearwielder, jabs Nokrugh hard in the stomach, causing the Half-Orc to wince in pain. Hobgoblins attack Nokrugh: [1d20] = 15, [1d6] = 2

OOC: Need TWO rounds of actions from Darkstar...and Nokrugh's actions for Round 4+

From Darkstar's point of view, he grins in satisfaction as his arrows find their marks, but grimaces to see Nokrugh surrounded. As he readies another volley of arrows, two things happen within seconds of each other:
> A warhorn sounds from down the ridge and he turns to see a large group (meaning at least a score) of Orcs rushing down the hill toward the unsuspecting Hobgoblins and Nokrugh. Their markings indicate they are the Orcs who chased him through the night.
> To his left...not 20 feet away...the air shimmers and hums...and suddenly there stands five companions: Greystone, Purvan, and the human Thaleese, along with Cumber and Wood, elves from the Lynx Clan! Cumber points down the hill at the charging Orcs, as Wood nocks an arrow and prepares for battle!

ACTIONS NEEDED FROM EVERYONE!!

The sound of the warhorn makes Darkstar's spirit crumble until the appearance of help causes his spirit to soar. He hopes that it will be enough and that his summoning of help with the coin will not end with them all dead.

All thoughts are pushed out of his mind as he begins his deadly rhythm of nock, aim, draw, release over and over again. He targets the hobgoblins first and will switch to the orcs once Nokrugh is clear.

Round 1:

Attack:
[1d20+4] = 5+4 = 9[1d6] = 6
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 1+4 = 5[1d6] = 1
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22[1d6] = 2

Round 2:

Attack:
[1d20+4] = 7+4 = 11[1d6] = 3
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 4+4 = 8[1d6] = 5
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 10+4 = 14[1d6] = 4

Purvan recovers his senses as quickly as he can when the air stops spinning and shimmering. Suddenly seeing Darkstar right there ahead of them, with his bow to hand and firing off arrows, the half-elf quickly pulls his short bow and makes ready to join in.

Seeing Cumber point and Wood making ready too, Purvan will look to fire arrows off at the approaching orc contingent.

Purvan: To Hit, short bow (+2 Dex bonus/-3 non-proficient,-2 medium range penalty) [1d20-3] = 17-3 = 14 (hits AC6), Damage [1d6] = 5

Purvan: To Hit, short bow (+2 Dex bonus/-3 non-proficient,-2 medium range penalty) [1d20-3] = 1-3 = -2 (sigh...), Damage [1d6] = 6

OOC: Marking off 2 more arrows!

~ Hedge, was assuming the orcs to be at medium range with the above rolls. If not, please adjust as necessary.

And then let me know if I shoot myself with that second shot, good sir!

Arrows start flying in all directions and Nokrugh's not entirely certain at least some of them aren't meant for him. Using the confusion to his advantage he retrieves his bastard sword and hacks at the nearest hobgoblins while maneuvering his back to a tree so that he only has to guard his front.

Round 4:

To hit:[1d20] = 9 Damage:[1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

Round 5:

Darkstar fills the air with arrows, striking three times, killing one Hobgoblin and wounding a second. Then...the Orcs charge around the ridge and the reinforcements "gate" in and he knows things are about to get ugly.

ROUND 4

Seeing Cumber and Wood preparing to fire, Purvan unslings his shortbow and lets fly. His first shot drops a charging Orc, tumbling it end over end. But as he draws a second arrow, his bowstring snaps, cracking like a dry twig! Cumber and Wood send a barrage of arrows into the charging orcs, wounding three. But instead of slowing them down, the Orcs are able to see the elves on the side of the ridge...and several break off and charge right at you!
Thaleese pulls the familiar wand (at least to Purvan) from her belt, and points it at the Orcs now coming at them. The wand magically spits out two energy missiles, and they weave around the trees to slam into one of the Orcs, killing it in its tracks.

H2 meets Nokrugh's attack with steel on steel, and as the sparks fly, the Hobgoblin presses up against Nokrugh and says, "Listen to me, breed! We are not trying to kill you! We were sent to bring you back with us!"
H1 grimaces from an arrow in its shoulder and says through jaws clenched with pain, "We won't survive these fragging Orcs if you don't help us! Our shaman sent us to find you, so stop fighting us and help us!"

@ Nokrugh >
With the exception of the one attack by the spearwielder, who now lies dead nearby, none of the Hobgoblins have seriously tried to hurt you...and the Orcs will attack at the end of round 5...and...you are about ready to go berserk, assuming that is still your goal...

Greystone decides the orcs are too great a risk to ignore, so he begins firing into them, going for the closest ones first...

Round Four:
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 5+3 = 8
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 4+3 = 7

Round Five:
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 17+3 = 20
Damage, Flight Arrow [1d6] = 2

To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+3] = 15+3 = 18
Damage, Flight Arrow [1d6] = 4

Once the orcs close in enough for melee, he will switch to long sword and knife...

Darkstar switches his point of attack from the hobgoblins to the incoming orcs. He figures hobgoblins will be easier to deal with if they actually survive the orc attack.

Round 4:
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15[1d6] = 1
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 5+4 = 9[1d6] = 6
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 7+4 = 11[1d6] = 5

Round 5 (unless anything major changes Darkstar will keep pumping out arrows)
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 2+4 = 6[1d6] = 5
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 19+4 = 23[1d6] = 3
Attack:
[1d20+4] = 6+4 = 10[1d6] = 2

Locked
