About this project

#1 Post by ToniXX »

The idea is we build a town based on input from people in our community. People submit ideas for individual establishments that would be found in this town. Each shop would need the basics: what is the establishment? Who runs it? (complete with OSRIC/1e NPC stats) What service does it offer? And, maybe most importantly, give a plot hook that centers around this establishment and/or its proprietor; something that could be used to begin a greater adventure, or serve up a little action between larger quests. Something like this can be used by DMs as a drop-in town for their own world.

The end result will be published somewhere as a free PDF, or maybe even a Lulu.com printed piece (sold at cost).

Some example establishments are:
  • Inn
  • Tavern
  • Magic shop
  • Temple (not a ‘shop’ but offers services, etc)
  • Guild - Traditional guilds: thieves, assassins, mages, etc
  • Trades guilds: armorers, fletchers & bowyers, builders, masons, tailors, shipwrights, etc.
  • Brothel
  • etc.
For inspiration, I looked through the 1ed Forgotten Realms material, specifically, FR1, Waterdeep and the North

I'll edit this post as we come up with more concrete ideas about this project.

Also note that if/when this gets released, you will get credit for your submission, but otherwise you are giving up rights to your entry. Thus, if you plan to include your submission in another project, hat project also has to be free of rights.

Just keep the concept of 'copyleft' in mind. This is taken from the copyleft Wikipedia entry:
Copyleft is a form of licensing and can be used to maintain copyright conditions for works such as computer software, documents, and art. In general, copyright law is used by an author to prohibit recipients from reproducing, adapting, or distributing copies of the software. In contrast, under copyleft, an author may give every person who receives a copy of a work permission to reproduce, adapt or distribute it and require that any resulting copies or adaptations are also bound by the same licensing agreement.
In regards to the bold sentence at the end of the quote, our licensing agreement will simply state that credit for entries must be retained. Otherwise, anything can be done with the document.
