Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
I am cool with the point buy, as long as there are no complaints from anyone.
I think that would help a few guys that have already rolled as well.
And it would likely make the characters more balanced.
Speak up if you don't like this idea!!!

Is there a minimum score we need to assign to each class? Can I have the world's ugliest monk to save some points for increasing dexterity, for example?

Point buy is fine with me.
Are you suggesting that we make sure we have characters who are above average in capability?

There is a minimum number you must abide by!Zhym wrote:Is there a minimum score we need to assign to each class? Can I have the world's ugliest monk to save some points for increasing dexterity, for example?
I just cant remember what it is.
I think it was an 8, but I will recheck my math to make sure that still works for all classes.
Lets stick to a low score of 8 for now until I have time to do the gosintas.

The characters.....not so much.Monsieur Rose wrote:Are you suggesting that we make sure we have characters who are above average in capability?
The players......definitely!
Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
Of course, the downside of a point buy system is that you're likely to get a lot of PCs with stats like (17 16 15 8 8 8), (17 17 14 8 8 8), or (16 16 16 8 8 8), which is kind of boring. One way around that would be to allow more points but make higher-level increase points cost more, but that makes it harder to figure out what a good starting number would be.
Another system I liked was everyone got the stats (17 16 15 14 13 12) to arrange as they liked.

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
Would that count as a complaint?
Ya, I don't think there is a "perfect for everybody" system out there.
We could do 17, 16, 15, 9, 8, 7 if you think that would be less....."boring".

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
That would be more interesting, but you can't do a monk, ranger, or paladin with those rolls. A monk needs the fourth-best attribute to be at least an 11. Rangers need four stats of 13 or better (two 14s, two 13s). A paladin needs a 17, 13, 12, 9, and 9. If you want to allow all classes with one set of rolls, (17, 16, 15, 13, 9, x) would work.OGRE MAGE wrote:We could do 17, 16, 15, 9, 8, 7 if you think that would be less....."boring".

I’m fine either way. 72 point buy is good if others are into it. I’m also happy to make due and play something else with my roll - not a big deal.

I guess the "point buy" would have to do then.Zhym wrote:That would be more interesting, but you can't do a monk, ranger, or paladin with those rolls. As I said, I don't believe there is a perfect system.

It's settled!
...right?
I'll write down my stats for my Gnome thief/illusionist as if it is...

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
I mean... can I just go with my rolls? I feel like for a 1E BTB game we're already spending too much time discussing how to roll stats.

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
Go with your rolls!
If your rolls suck, go with a 72 point build.
This ends the ability score rolling discussions!

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
Ability score rolls: [4d6c1] = 9 [4d6c1] = 8 [4d6c1] = 4
Ability score rolls2: [4d6c1] = 10 [4d6c1] = 14 [4d6c1] = 9
horrible. Trying again
Ability score rolls: [4d6c1] = 13 [4d6c1] = 9 [4d6c1] = 13
Ability score rolls2: [4d6c1] = 14 [4d6c1] = 9 [4d6c1] = 13
Tremendously mediocre
72 point build sounds really good right now
Has anyone decided on what they are playing yet?

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
I will switch from a druid to a fighter and go for tough SOB. Can I run a half-orc fighter? Also if I do the points is the 17 max before or after racial modifiers? I was thinking a 18/% Str and 18 Con (17+1 for half-orc).
Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
I mean, it has the 17, 16, 15 like the proposed method; it just has 9, 10, 11 instead of 8, 8, 8.
I'm happy to wait and see what everyone else builds and then fill in whatever we are missing or light on.

Re: Pre Launch Char Gen Discussion
Now I'm thinking of abandoning the monk idea in favor of using my second set of rolls for a different concept:
Name: Bluto
Class: Fighter
S: 14
I: 8
W: 7
D: 9
Co: 15
Ch: 13
Description: Fat, drunk, and stupid
Equipment: Toga! Toga! Toga!
Yeah. This might work.
