OTHERSPACE: Episode One - Between a TIE and a Hard Place

#1 Post by max_vale »

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….

A small team of Rebel Agents race across space in a small freighter, on a mission to rendezvous with the Alliance transport Celestial. They've been ordered to dock with the vessel and escort its special cargo to a hidden Rebel safe-world in an uncharted sector of space.

But the Empire also has a special interest in the cargo and even now Imperial forces comb the galaxy in search of the Celestial. What awaits the Rebels at the end of thier trip may be more than they bargained for and more than the galaxy is ready to handle…

The five Rebel members of Black Team; Professor Clark Jones, Zinn Valimar, Gavin Storm, Zuul Ksska and newcomer Vale Starcloud; were all just coming out of hyperspace aboard the Light Freighter Out Runner; when they literally ran into an Imperial TIE fighter.

As the TIE went spirialling into space, half aflame, Zinn in the pilot seat and Gavin in co-pilot seat suddenly came to life; powering up shields and weapons and scanning the area to determine what they had just run into. Essentially, they found themselves in close proximity to a Star Destroyer and the other 11 TIE fighters of a squadron they had just slammed into during some kind of patrol or exercise.

Clark, Zuul and Vale were all in the small lounge behind the 2 seat cockpit and everyone's eyes immediately went to the ladder-well that lead down to the cargo deck and more importantly to the Twin Laser turret station. Before anyone could speak though, a massive Turbolaser blast zips past the small freighter and a voice crackles over the ship's comms….

"Unidentified freighter…..you have entered a restricted area of space. By order of the Galactic Empire, identify yourself immediately and come to a full stop. Any deviation will be dealt with accordingly. Our next shot will NOT be a warning."

Vale Starcloud looks wide-eyed at the others in the lounge. Over the warning alarms he says incredulously, 'An imperial cruiser? Who's idea was it to send our rendezvous through restricted space?'

He looks to the gun hatchway. 'Fighting would do us no good, but we might be able to escape. I'm afraid I would only get in the way if I tried to help.'

He braces himself in his seat and tries to see what's happening in space, outside the cockpit screen.

"I agree," Clark rumbles, "to fight here would be futile. But can we escape?" He directs the last question to Zinn.

Zuul opens one eye, grumbles something about space travel, and seems to nod off.

Unknown system in Restricted Space; Outer-Rim territories; Rebel freighter Outrunner

Zinn curses upon seeing the squadron of TIEs and the Imperial Star Destroyer. "Too many to fight, but we can certainly try and have this ship live up to its name"….He punches up the ship's engines to maximum power and yanks the freighter over hard and on a course directly away from the Imperials. His maneuver caught the enemy by surprise and thier return fire misses, though some shots are close enogh to visibly streak past the cockpit.

"Fly this thing for a minute Gavin, just dodge those TIEs while I plot a hyperspace jump from the navacomputer"; Zinn says to Storm and he proceeds to wheel his chair to the side and start furiously punching up information on said computer*.

In the lounge area, Clark and Vale clutch thier seats tight and hope for the best while Zuul seems to be….snoring?….

*Zinn is the only one with the Astrogation skill, which is used when plotting a non pre-packaged hyperspace jump. The Difficulty number in this case is a 15 and as he has a skill of 5D in it, he's the best choice….really the only other character with even 3D in MECH is Gavin….and those odds aren't great, so I made this choice….hopefully it's cool.

Vale holds himself upright as the ship dips and swerves by grasping onto an exposed thermo-coupling nearby. 'Well now you've certainly got their attention. I hope you're right about this ship's speed. The Empire uses rather unsavoury methods of interrogation.'

Unknown system in Restricted Space; Outer-Rim territories; Rebel freighter Outrunner

Professor Clark lurched to the ladder running down to the cargo hold where the turret seat had been installed, nearly falling several times as Gavin jinked and juked the ship all over space to avoid incoming laser fire from the TIEs. He staggered over to the turret seat and strapped in as he felt the ship shake and shudder as some of the Imperials shots found thier mark. As his targeting sensors came on-line, Clark worked the controls and got ready to dish out to the Imperials some of what they had been dealing….

Gavin Storm muttered under his breath about the unfairness of it all as he took the controls for the ship and spun them wildly this way and that….doing an excellent job of dodging most of the TIEs blasts. A few did manage to connect with the freighter, causing the ship to vibrate and the lights to momentarily dim as the shields were drained of half thier strength…

Vale and Zuul did thier best to stay in thier seats through all the action; the big Barabel recounting stories to the newest member of the team as the Jedi did his best to keep his mind calm and to NOT focus too much on the mating ritual details his teammate was sharing with him….

Zinn worked furiously at the navicomputer to plot a hyperspace course that would get them out of thier current predicament. He was about half-way there as he felt the Outrunner take a blast that would surely have destroyed it had it not been for the shields. Without consciously realizing it, he began muttering under his breath for the frieghter to hold together just A LITTLE BIT LONGER….

Zuul looks at Vale, giving him the once over. He then nods and smiles toothily at his new companion. "He likess you. Very attentive to his storiess. You would enjoy a stay on Barab, one day you will be his guest!"

"He must warn you though, Barab food can be quite aggressive."

Vale silently raises a wondrous eyebrow at Zuul. "Is it a Barabel custom to be so… forthcoming… with intimate detail? I had not realized the game animals on Barab had quite so many organs… sounds delicious!" He smiles uncomfortably and nods at whatever the Barabel giant says.

Zinn lets out a whoop of joy as the coordinates are accepted and the navicomputer starts spooling the jump. Swinging back to the flight controls, he says, "Thanks for the assist. Now, let's get outta here before these Imps turn us into glowing atoms."

Zinn starts making wild evasive maneuvers, bringing the ship around on the bearing for their jump out.

Unknown system in Restricted Space; Outer-Rim territories; Rebel freighter Outrunner

Professor Clark takes a shot with the Outrunner's twin laser cannon, narrowly missing a TIE fighter, but causing it to veer off of its attack run while Gavin Storm yanks the controls this way and that, maneuvering violently to throw off the aim of the rest of the TIE squadron that surrounds them and causing all of the Rebels onboard to clutch thier restraining belts tightly….

The evasive maneuvers work on most of the Imperial ships; green bolts zipping past the litle frieghter on every side; with only a pair of TIEs managing to land blows; one of them draining the last of the Rebel ship's shields and landing a blast right near the rear engines at about the same time that Zinn Vallimar, having completed plotting the hyperspace jump with the navicomputer pulls the lever that sends the vessel into said hyperspace….

The stars blur into white streaks of light and the then strange colors of hyperspace are visible from the cockpit for a moment or too before a strange grinding, popping sounds emerges from the hyperspace engines. The ship suddenly lurches out of hyperspace into the strangest section of space anyone has ever seen…

Instead of the ebony sea of space, a strange storm-gray field surrounds the Outrunner and occasional swirls of colored gasses break up the ashy expanse like bolts of lightning discharging in a billowing thunder storm cloud. No millions of pinpoints of light where stars would be, instead the pinholes are of shining black darkness that pepper the vast gray….not space…….OTHERSPACE….

'What a strange place. I've never seen anything like it before. Captain, where did you take us?' Vale Starcloud stands behind the pilot's chair in the cramped cockpit and looks wondrously off into Otherspace.

Without thinking about it consciously, he finds himself stretching his mind, probing the grey storm with the Force.

Gavin unfastening his restraints and letting the craft idly sit in otherspace "Don't ask me ask Zinn. All I did was evasion tactics. But blast it all now I gotta go see about the damages since we decided to open fire and took major damage. Least I can do is try and get shields back and repair what I can from inside." after saying his reply to Vale with haste Gavin heads off to assess the damage and attempt repairs. "I'll tape her up as best I can." are the final parting words.

Yes I am using my Starship repair skills

Clark looks out the viewport of the turret station in fascination. He racks his brain trying to figure out what theory could explain where he could possibly be...
