Kerowyn Hucrele
At the mention of the apple, Aubron becomes intensely focused on the Lady's story. "Solonor is good, and he will help us to find your children. This I swear," he says in a quiet tone. Kerowyn places her hand on the elf's shoulder, takes another sip from her next glass of wine, and smiles.

"I don't know if you are aware, but I am an accomplished entertainer," Sky says to Kerowyn, attracted by her apparent wealth, and looking to enhance her mood and solidify her confidence in her decision in selecting them to assist her -- for a reward! Sky retrieves her lute and sets it on the table. "But first...there is the simple matter of this infernal spot!" she calls out, launching herself from the table, and racing over to a red spot taunting her on the floor; attempting to smack it with both paws.

"And YES!!!" Kerowyn proclaims loudly, apparently losing interest in watching the cat tricks. "Tsssh -- thsh -- the apple... it WORKS!!!" she proclaims as she swings herself in her seat to face Kelben "And I'm gonna buy it again!"

"We will do everything within our power to return your children to you," Klilxuac says, smiling and trying to turn on the charm. "I don't know if others have anything they may need to do in town before we set out, but I would imagine we should be able to be on our way fairly soon." Kerowyn turns her attention from the gnome to the half-dragon. "I knew my. I knew my... I kn. I knew my trust in you guys was worth it!" she stutters. "Schtop by my store before you leave," she says. 'I might need something you have. I mean -- I might have something you need." she says, laughing.

Klilxuac continues to provide Sky some exercise and shifts the red dot just before her paws slap down on top of its original position. Sky watches intently as the dot escapes her grasp. "Blasted thing! How did it escape? It can only be....dark magic!" she says as she watches the light travel back to the table. "Ah! There it is...." she says excitedly, eying the elusive dot until it rests upon the one called Farador. Her pupils slowly dilate until only inky black remains. She crouches down, her tail twitching almost imperceptibly as she lies in wait. "You will not escape this time, spot!"

"Excellent!" Kerowyn says loudly, and the timing of her proclamation was seemingly without cause, or prompting. Her responses are apparently very much on delay.

She informs the group that if they need anything, she may have it, and they're welcome to check in with her store. If not, she bids the group adieu... and finally succumbs to her stress and alcohol cocktail -- her head collapses solidly onto the solid oak of the table's surface.

Before long, a light, peaceful snoring sound is heard.

Qelgrax Klilxuac

While it might be helpful to pick up some additional supplies, I'm not sure how much good it will do us to stop in at the store, unless we are willing to purchase items. Nobody there will know of her offer to us, and even if Kerowyn were to awaken, she may not remember the offer anyway.

Kelben replies to Qelgrax "I was more or less thinking about finding out how reliable a source our passed out drunk friend here is. As well as seeing if they have any more information on the healing apple."

Farador can't help but notice the glimmer of determination in the tabaxi's eyes, and her intent seems obvious. "Now now," he says, eyes narrowing at Sky. "Let's not right now," he warns her, raising a cautionary hand. Just to be safe, he stands from the table and backs away a step. "We can play later, but we have some things to get to first."

"Uh, what about her then?" he asks the others, gesturing to Kerowyn. He scratches the back of his neck. "We should make sure she gets home safe. Ask the barman where she lives. I don't like the idea of her sleeping off her drunk in such a public place..."

Qelgrax Klilxuac

Standing up, the dragonborn lets the spell drop. I agree that we should get more information about this "magic apple."

Approaching the bar, Klilxuac engages the bartender in quiet conversation. Will she be okay?
Do we leave her here or should we take her someplace? Someone that can come get her? We wish to make sure no harm befalls her in her current state. She also mentioned something about purchasing "magic apples" from goblins, and this may have something to do with the disappearance of her children. Unfortunately, with the amount of drink she has consumed, I am not sure how much we should believe.
Do you know anything about this?

Kelben agreeing with the dragonborn entirely gets up and follows him over to the bartender listening quietly to the conversation.

Sky
Holding back

After what seems like an eternity, Sky's eyes return to normal. She blinks twice and then smiles at Farador. "Hmm, looked like you had something on your face earli'er. No matter." She stands, moves over to Kerowyn and sits down close to her. Very close to her. She sniffs and wrinkles her nose. "There goes my audience" A thought crosses her mind. "You think she would show some appreciation if we take her home?"

"You think she would show some appreciation if we take her home?"
"Aye, she might at that," Farador replies, still wary of Sky but less so now. "Least we can do is fetch her a blanket. Barman, do you have a safe space for Miss Hucrele to rest in the back?" If there is such a spot, Farador will gladly carry her there and blanket her with his cape.

After that business is concluded, he turns to the others. "Now, where do we even begin to ask about crazy magic apples?" His brow furrows. "Sounds like some wive's tale to me."

Ol' Boar Inn
"Now now," Farador says, eyes narrowing at Sky. "Let's not right now," he warns her, raising a cautionary hand while slowly taking a step back from the table. "We can play later, but we have some things to get to first."

A strand of Kerowyn's rolled hair falls into a spilled pool of red wine on the table. "A shame that stress would drive a woman to become the town drunk," Kelben sighs, shaking his head at the sight of the passed out woman. "We could try to find out how reliable a source our passed out drunk friend here is... and if we can find any more information about this healing apple she mentioned."

"Uh, what are we going to do with her?" Farador asks, gesturing to Kerowyn. Standing up, the dragonborn lets his spell drop as he head to the bar, causing Sky's eyes return to normal. The she-cat blinks twice and then smiles at Farador. "Hmm, looked like you had something on your face earlier. No matter." She stands, moves over to Kerowyn and sits down close to her. Very close to her. She sniffs and wrinkles her nose. "There goes my audience," she sighs.

"Will she be okay?" Klilxuac ask, engaging the bartender in quiet conversation. "Do we leave her here, or should we take her someplace?"

"I'm afraid I saw this coming,"
Garon confesses, but assures him that this isn't a regular occurance. "She's been waiting for a group of outsiders for days now, and I'm sure is undoubtedly relieved to have found a party interested in taking up her cause... you are going to help her, right?" Garon goes to pat Klilxuac on the shoulder, then awkwardly pulls his hand back before making contact with the deep, reddish scales. "No worries. I've already sent a dishwasher to fetch a couple guards to provide her a safe escort home," he adds, trying to recover from the embarrassment. He assures Klilxuac, and Kelben who had snuck up behind the half-dragon, that handling her in her current condition is not their responsibility.

"She mentioned something about purchasing 'magic apples' from goblins," Klilxuac asks before concluding his business with the barkeep. "Know anything about that?"

"Magic apple; not apples. There's just the one." Garon corrects. "Well, one per year. Every year. For at least the past dozen years or so. Always on the summer solstice," he adds. "Ms Hucrele would know better than anyone, as she probably has more wealth than the rest of the town combined, and is the only one of us that can outlast the goblin's greed."

"Then, when Sir Braford last arrived, and he vowed to find the source of these magic apples, Kerowyn's children couldn't conceal their excitement at the opportunity."

"That, I'm sure, is why she's convinced her children are with him, and why she's betting they went to the 'sunless citadel,' as that is where the goblins have been establishing roots of late."

Aubron

Aubron considers the barman's information some more. This is a strange occurrence, but I am feeling the pull to track my quarry. But, maybe some others around town know some more information. Also, the Lady offered something that may be of assistance, after she wakes of course, Aubron thinks to himself.

Turning to the group, Aubron says, Clearly, the town knows of this yearly gathering of the magic apple. I'd like to find out a little more information about this magic apple, so perhaps there are others who can give assistance. Garon, what kind of shops can we find in Oakhurst, and do you know anyone else who has more knowledge about this magic apple, aside from the Lady here?

Kelben looks intrigued further by this magical healing apple "Sounds like these goblins found a cash cow and are milking it for all it's worth. We really should gather a bit more information on this apple they has been sold here for the last dozen years. Thank you Garon." gears clearly in motion in the gnomes head he looks to the others "She's got an escort home so come now we have further information to gather before we head off to this sunless citadel."

After hearing Garon's tale of the magic apple, the dragonborn faces his party. Hmm. If this apple is something known to the public, as it appears is in fact the case, we may very well wish to pay a visit to her store for information gathering purposes. I would imagine those trusted with running her business would have some knowledge of the magic apple she purchases each year- perhaps even knowledge that the public at large does not possess. And while there, even if no further information can be gained, at the very least we can pick up any supplies we may need for the journey. If nobody has anything else...? Then let us be on our way.

Turning back to the bartender, he says, Thank you, Garon. This is a fine establishment. I hope that in a few days, we can all meet here again to celebrate the return of the missing Hucrele children. Now, where exactly is this store?

Sky

She seems quite animated and anxious to act, lightly bouncing on her feet as she makes her way over to the bar.
"Magic Apple? Excellent! I wonder, what might I rhyme with apple? Scrapple? Grapple? Ah! Chapel! But, you know, chapels would work better. Yes. The adventure of the Magic Apples. Quite nice."

Sky looks at the barman "What? Did I get something in my fur again?" "Lead on, brave souls, to peruse the wares and learn the secrets of this 'Hucrele'."

She goes and gathers her things, then moves to the door and....waits, just staring at it.

Kelben waits for a moment then heads out of the tavern and outside into the town he waits outside for the others once given directions to the store. The gnome hums a little to himself nothing recognizable to anyone listening.

Aubron

Aubron decides that perhaps the mayor or the constable may know more information about the apple, the Knight, and the missing children. I am going to seek some answers with the authorities. If you should join me, then you are welcome. If not, I will meet you back here with some information, he says to the group.
Aubron questions them on the following:
1. The children
2. Sir Bradford
3. Karakas
4. Magic Apple
5. Lady Hucrele
6. Sunless Citadel
7. Goblins
8. Travel on the Old Road

Magic Apple
"Do you know anyone else who has more knowledge about this magic apple, aside from the Lady here?" Aubron asks Garon. The barkeep informs the elf, and the rest of the group, that no current survivors still reside in Oakhurst. "The first apple or two were sold for only a couple of gold pieces, which, mind you, still still a lot for us simple folk. It was around year three when the goblins started to get greedy, and kept increasing the price year after year... I think Kerowyn paid over 50 gold for the apple last year! I'm afraid they're going to ask for even more this year."

"I think Berwyn and Schmale purchased the first two apples, but neither of them have lived in Oakhurst for some years now.
he adds. "A few years ago, Kerowyn had the idea to plant the seeds from the apples, to try and grow a magic appletree, and it looks like it might have been working. Each year, the seeds begin to produce a twiggy mass of twisted sapling stems... but not long after the saplings reach 2-feet in height or so, they are stolen -- every time." Garon says with a hint of frustration. "I'm positive it's the goblins who send out thieves to steal these trees, ensuring their monopoly of enchanted fruit."

When asked what other local places of interest can be found in town, Garon shares the following:
Oakhurst.jpg
Oakhurst.jpg (162.2 KiB) Viewed 2419 times
"You can find Dem next door to the right; she's like you --" he says, pointing at Kelben, adding that 'Corkie' is a female gnome priest of Pelor.

The well just outside isn't that interesting.

Across the road is Rurik Lutgehr, our village smithy, who's excellent at repairing and forging arms and armor.

Then the General Store, owned by Kerowyn, her personal home, the Mayor's office, and we also have a jail.

The group learns that the locals are not the most forthcoming of people, especially with strangers, but do manage to learn the following, about the following:
(Note: I am replying to Aubron's list, which looks pretty thorough, but let me know if I miss anything.)
  • The Children: Despite growing up with relative wealth, the kids have always been well-behaved and hard working. They have become more and more adventurous as they've aged.
  • Sir Bradford: A younger knight of Pelor, without much experience. He was born here in Oakhurst, but his family was rumored to have moved west, towards Neverwinter, while he was still young. He still shows up from time-to-time, and is very boastful. He somehow came into possession of Shatterspike, a named magical blade, which he claims he won by defeating a goblin king... which no one actually believes.
  • Karakas: Like the Hucrele twins, was a respectable lad. He loved the outdoors -- hunting and tracking -- and recently became frustrated when, like the twins, was forbidden from venturing out to the Sunless Citadel.
  • Magic Apple: A single bite of the apple has been successfully used to to cure pretty much every ailment it has been tested against. Lady Hucrele has been the only one able to afford to purchase the apple for the last 10 years or so, and has been generous with rationing it out to those most in need of it.
  • Lady Hucrele: Until recently, has been a model citizen, and the likely successor to the Mayor when he resigns his duties. She's, understandably, been a different person after her twins went missing.
  • Sunless Citadel: Not too much is known about it. Some people in town were secretly thankful when Sir Braford showed up recently and vowed to clean it up in his quest to find the source of the magic apples; others were rightfully concerned for the safety of him and anyone he managed to recruit;
  • Goblins: They've become quite a nuisance of late. There are only a few dozen people that actually live in town, with the rest of the population -- around 900 total -- living in the surrounding farmland. There have been increased complaints from the farmers of damaged crops, missing livestock, goblin harassment, etc...
  • Travel on the Old Road: The Old Road skirts the Ashen Plain, a lifeless area. It is rumored that this desolation is attributed to the long-ago rampage of a dragon named Ashardalon.
Anyone that pays a visit to the General Store finds that it has any item (armor, weapons, equipment, etc...) available up to 50 gold pieces, but they might be able to acquire more expensive items from merchants given enough advance notice.

Aubron

A bit exhausted from all his walking around the village decides that he would like to make one more stop before heading back to the Ol' Boar for a drink and a meal. He walks into Rurik's blacksmith shop to see what sort of arms he has for sale. Ho there! I hear from the bartender that your name is Rurik. My companions and I are about to venture forth looking for Lady Kerowyn's lost children. Do you have any weapons for sale that may be of use as I hear Goblins are troublesome in the area?
