Session 4: The Grove

#1 Post by dmw71 »

The Grove
The vines circle the 10-foot wide shaft allowing everyone to secure a position along the bottom of the shaft, before it drops into the area below, and arrive on the new level at the same time. Except for Erky, who will be a step behind.

On a silent count of three, everyone drops into the unknown area below.

An open passage is spotted leading out of the area from the far corner nearest Kelben and Sky. A single closed door lies on the wall on the opposite side of the room.

Luminescent fungus, shedding violet light, clings to the walls and ceiling of what is a wide cavern. The air is damp, chilly, and redolent with the odors of loam and decay. A layer of earth, mixed with rotting vegetation and the remains of cave animals, covers the floor. Several varieties of mushrooms and fungi grow on the detritus, as well as a few saplings.

The area has the looks of a garden.

Two skeletons wearing deep crimson robes appear to be tending to a patch of fungus using shovels and a rusted wheelbarrow to turn the soil and spread compost.

Additionally, two of the twig blights Grenl cautioned the group about are rooted in the garden.

These twig blights appear to begin pulling their roots free of the ground and their branches twist together and begin to form a humanoid-looking body with a head and limbs.

Hargrem

The cleric joined the others in the climb to the unknown pit below. He struggled given the weight of his armor, but he managed to overcome this and repel using the vines that were growing up the walls. It was surprising their strength, and he was happy that for once, things were going in their direction.

That was until they dropped down into the 'garden.' He quickly looked around and saw walking skeletons and vine like humanoids. He lifted his shield and said a quick prayer to Tymora. It seemed they were not out of the woods yet.

Sky drops with the grace of a, well, cat. "Hey. Are these things intelligent? I forgot to ask." Sky pulls her crossbow and fires once at twig #2.

Initiative Order
  • 20: Twig Blights
  • 18: Sky
  • 16: Kelben, Skeletons
  • 10: Klilxuac
  • 7: Erky
  • 3: Hargrem
---

Round 1
The wooden "feet" clank as the twig blights rush at the intruders. The first animated shrub lashes out with a set of wooden claws at the dodging Hargrem and its natural weapons of wood are unable to penetrate the metal armor of the well-protected cleric.

The second blight rushes up to Sky and swipes with its claws of bark, but the bard is able to deftly sidestep the attempt. "Hey, are these things intelligent?" the tabaxi asks, seeming unaffected by the threat looming before her. The feline takes quick aim with her hand crossbow and, with near perfect aim, sends splinters flying as her bolt splinters the shrub-like creature. It collapses into what is essentially a pile of twigs.

After Sky eliminates one of the twig blights right in front of him, Kelben wheels around and jabs at the other with his rapier. Like the bard before him, the rogue issues a near perfect strike and sends shards of wood scattering as the other twig blight erupts into shards.

The two skeletons hold their positions and, drawing bows, send misguided arrows flying in the directions of Klilxuac and Kelben.
R01.jpg
R01.jpg (243.56 KiB) Viewed 2698 times
Erky drops from his climb and remains content to leave himself in the relative protection of the rest of the group spaced evenly around him. "They seem kinda dumb to me," he says in response to Sky's earlier question of the twig blights. "And dead."

Channeling the wild magic that flows through his body, the sorcerer bends the laws of magic to his will, producing a result not normally seen. Extending both hands, a bolt of fire launches forth from the fingertips of each hand, racing towards a skeleton with deadly accuracy.

Hargrem

The cleric just watched as the dragonborn sent out some hellacious fire towards the two skeletons. Well done, he exclaimed. With his own holy magic, he walks up to the closest skeleton (that's still alive) and sends a sacred holy fire down upon it.
Move to Melee: If both skeletons are still alive, then he will pick Skeleton 2, otherwise, he will pick the one that is still up. If all are dead, then woohoo!
Action: Cast Sacred Flame (DEX13 save): [1d8] = 2

"Seems like it Erky. Maybe we can chat with the next ones." Sky turns her attention to the suddenly bow-wielding skeleton gardeners.

She reloads and fires at skeleton #1.
Hand Crossbow: [1d20+5] = 8+5 = 13
Damage: [1d6+3] = 4+3 = 7
After Klilxuac splits his firebolt to hit both skeletons: "You see! This! This is why magic is cool."

Round 2
"Maybe we can chat with the next ones," Sky quips to Ekly while turning her attention to the bow-wielding skeleton gardeners. The tabaxi quickly reloads her crossbow and watches as the bolt she sent at the skeleton just off to her right strikes bone and sends shards from its right clavicle spraying!

Kelben rushes to engage with the same skeleton Sky just clipped, and the splaying bone fragments prove to be just enough of a distraction that the rogue's lunging attempt with his rapier misses its mark.

The first skeleton, now engaged in melee with Kelben, tosses its shortbow at the gnome, then quickly draws a shortsword and sticks the sharp end of it into the rogue (-4) during the distraction.

Channeling the wild magic that flows through his body, Klilxuac bends the laws of magic to his will, and, after extending both hands out, launches a bolt of fire from each, successfully managing to strike each skeleton once -- shattering the first, and breaking off a collection of exposed ribs from the second! "That was cool magic!" Sky proclaims after witnessing the impressive feat from her dragonborn friend.

In an unexpected move, Erky charges at the remaining skeleton brandishing nothing more than a dagger, but he sends his short blade through the eye socket of the exposed cranium, ending its life... again.

Hargrem, prepared to issue his own brand of holy magic, finds himself without a target. "Well done," he says.

Hargrem, believing he hears a noise -- possibly the sound of movement -- coming from the open passage, raises his hand and hushes the group.

The sorcerer, clearly missing the nuance and second meaning of Sky's comment, replies quietly. No, Sky. I am a red dragonborn. I do not do cool magic. I do fire magic! He then readies himself for whatever Hargrem noticed.

Round 0
The group waits for the noise from the open passage to develop into something.

After a second or two, a pair of rats scurry into the room; their beady eyes fixed on the various party members as they begin sniffing around the immediate area. A second later, a booming voice, in the goblin tongue, roars: "Haar kaarthec duun ghaar daan shuush huur!"

Erky, reluctantly, translates quietly. "He's saying, 'Get ready to meet the cook pot.'" The gnome takes a few steps backwards, towards the rest of you.

"Ghaan Rhal'dac. O dhuul," it roars again, effortlessly pointing his giant morningstar in the groups' direction, then clanking it against the shield he carries in his right hand. Erky gulps, then shares that Balsag, the bugbear, apparently has plans on having them as a meal.

Hargrem

The cleric watched as his companions made quick work of the skeletons and living blights. Though, he was troubled as skittering noises could be heard from the open passage to the north. A quick word of warning was issued to the others, as he moved to investigate. Before he could get to close, however, rats and a bugbear appeared. The bugbear was issuing words in a very menacing tone, and Hargrem knew that another fight was close at hand.

He prepared himself for battle. The cleric moved in closer, and as he did, he said a quick prayer to Tymora. "The will of good luck shall ever be on our side, he cried to the others."

A ghostly image of a shuriken appeared behind the bugbear and started spinning unnaturally. Hargrem had called forth the favored weapon of Tymora to strike at the leader. With a flick of his wrist, he watched as its ephemeral form hit the offending goblinoid in the head sinking deep into its skull. An unseen hand withdrew the shuriken and it stood right behind the bugbear ready for a second strike.

Realizing there is still the likelihood of combat with a mage and his remaining spells dwindling, the dragonborn knows that the bugbear represents a significant threat. After a few moments of indecision, he decides that magic is his best option, sending four glowing, purple projectiles streaking toward their foe.

---

Round 1
"The will of good luck shall ever be on our side," Hargrem boasts in a rallying cry as he advances boldly towards the menacing bugbear and his pair of giant rat pets.

With his shield brandished before him, the priest summons a ghostly image of a shuriken behind the bugbear, and with a flick of his wrist, th ephemeral form strikes the offending goblinoid in the head, sinking deep into its skull and eliciting a pained roar. "O'kaan huuc duun huul dhuur dar!"

"Probably best if I don't repeat that,"
Erky's voice can be heard saying from behind his advanced position.

Balsag, looking to make good on his promise, rushes at the holy man with his morningstar held above his head, sends it crashing down against Hargrem, who deflects the blow harmlessly away with his shield... but the power behind the strike is unmistakable.

Sky watches Hargrem race forward, and get jolted by the force of an imposing blunt weapon -- then her focus turns to the delicious looking eastern giant rat. "Dinner? I could go for some dinner," she purrs as she lets loose a bolt from her crossbow with sinks into the thick hide of the creature and elicits a pained squeak.

Undeterred, the heavily wounded rat, Fang, joins Grip and the pair flank the priest, but the heavily armored divine caster, propelled by his faith, manages to fend off attack after attack.

Klilxuac, realizing the threat Balsag represents, sends four glowing, purple projectiles streaking toward their hulking foe and admires as one strike after another sends the hairy beast reeling. The howl is definitely more pained than it is menacing as the bugbear struggles against the damage inflicted by five successful strikes borne against it.

Still struggling against its wounds, Balsag reflexively brings his shield around just in time to deflect away Kelben's near death blow.

Instead, the contest continues as Erky remains behind and readies a dagger attack... if necessary.
