The Golden Scales Tavern

This thread is intended for adventurers to share tales of their exploits and arrange expeditions into the wild. The date in this thread is always the same as that of the Golden Tooth Tavern(which tracks the main game date).

Players may ONLY post to this thread while the character they are speaking as is in town (obviously).

Occasionally, NPCs may share information in this thread as well if they happen to be privy to something of interest and think it worth sharing.

To depart on an expedition, announce here that you are leaving town, the date, and any companions.

A brightly-lit establishment of sturdy log planking, the Golden Scales of Justice Tavern is alive with activity of those visiting the White Tower and the off-duty soldiers who serve in the military companies here. It offers both food and lodging, as well as a steady cadre of buxom and bawdy women who frequent a table by the stairs to the rooms above, entreating the lonely soldiers if they'd 'like company.' Furniture of sturdy pine, fashioned from the woodland to the north, provides ample accommodation. Beyond the plain furnishings, the room is adorned lavishly in oil-painted canvases which decorate each wall. Most notably, behind the bar is an oversized portrait of Lord Commander Bremen valiantly standing atop the hill and brandishing his glowing, magical sword as he leads an attack upon cowering ranks of skeletal undead. On the far wall, above the long-tables used by most of the soldiers, is a panoramic painting showing Lord Commander Bremen leading a Halfling, a knight, a cleric -- all of whom look disheveled and fearful -- and a cowled and slinking warrior who hides his face to conceal sigils of a divine curse, into a resplendent temple, a pit trap open beside them.

The proprietor, a wide-shouldered and dark-bearded dwarf with only one eye, the other covered by a patch, glowers behind the bar. His serving wenches are much more personable and serve any orders requested.

Two dwarves, two clerics of differing gods, an elf, and a stable boy gather to themselves at a table in the tavern. Word gets around that they seek audience with the Lord Commander, but the gruff dwarf has been unsuccessful in entreating the military commanders to let him in.

A group of adventurers clusters around a private table, discussing their next expedition and looking at maps, hoping not to be overheard. (Fingers, Bandy, Markd, Hengist, and Winnie)

Winnie, eager to see the world, takes a few moments to look around the tavern. She stops short when she gets to the far wall and sees the painting. She looks between the painting and her companions, then back again. She shakes her head, then returns to her table, whispering, I really don't think your "friend" thinks much of the two of you... She recommends that they try to be inconspicuous.

Bandy frowns at the crude painting and orders a cup of hot tea, currently unwilling to spend more than a copper in this establishment...

Lord Commander Bremen returns to the White Tower with a wagon load of treasure. Word quickly spreads of his triumphant expedition, spreading word of the Knights of Baudhil and their crucial role in slaying the ancient, red dragon Scatha. Excitedly knights and civilians talk about the newest building planned to hold Scatha's skeleton for all to see, and a symbol of the friendship between the White Tower and the newly restored dwarf kingdom, as well as the upcoming Tournament.

Fall Festival

'Blackjack' Amistad and logging foreman Godric and retainer Akaara arrive by wagon at the White Tower. The wagon contains several planks of wood and joists ordered by Bremen to further his rebuilding plans.

The trio book the private rooms at the tavern and stable the horse to cover the festival time. (-75sp to cover 3 days food and lodging).

"The festival will be a nice break prior to setting off northwards." All three throw names into the ring to join various events.

Amistad melee, Akaara archery, Godric shares a story.

Fall Festival

Tanor arrives at the White Tower late in the festival, having spent more than a few days navigating there after arriving in Gaul. He gazes wide-eyed around the common room, before securing a meal and a bed for remainder of the festival.

Amistad

Sees the newcomer enter and sit on his own. He orders beers for his trio and a flagon of ale for Tanor (presuming you are old enough to drink).

"Welcome to the festival. I see you sit there like a rabbit in the torchlight. Plenty of martial tourneys to test your arm in.". He notes the guys more studious appearance. "You could always make a name for yourself in the telling of sagas. Godric my aide leads after he bewildered the crowd, surely you can best his nursery story with some epic horror from the wild blue yonder?"

Tanor stammers a thanks to Amisted for the ale. He takes a healthy sip before responding.

Not very good at giving speeches. Might check out the other competitions though.

After an awkward moment of silence, he adds, I'm Tanor.

Amistad introduces the trio to the young man. "I'm Amistad, owner of a sawmill and logging enterprise up north, this is Godric my yard foreman and Akaara my aide. She hums in Morlock, a strange subterranean creature that tunnels below the ancient forests. Many challenges for brave adventurers nearby. Do you have plans?"

I overheard talk of goblin troubles to the southwest of Gaul. They said there was a dwarf-king there now, but they still needed help clearing out the goblins. That sounds interesting.

A handsome man in soft dragonhide armor, and a perfect moustache enters the tavern with two guards. He purchases a drink. Then another few. Then he eyes the tavern, settling on the four strangers. He walks their way with purpose, then sits down as he asks permission to join. Once caught up on the conversation, and has thanked Amistad for the lumber from his mill, Lord Commander Bremen offers to take Tanor under his wing. Orcs offer nothing but violence and blood, with little treasure to show for your troubles. Except a lot of bug bites and ticks from the forest you'll be lumbering through. Same with the goblins, but they're worse because if all the traps. I saw a dwarf crushed under his ancestors' portcullis, then peppered with arrows. Death came too fast to do anything but avenge him.

But I'm offering a chance to ride through the plains and see hippogriffs, hunt a beast, and find a load of treasure. We'll have a unit of my men for escort as well.

What is your skill set, Mr. Tanor?

Amistad

"He'll need that unit of men too. The devil-dog he chases toyed with the flesh and bones of his last knights. And where the Hound goes, the Master will surely follow. Find treasure? What he means is 'rob graves'.

The expedition I lead is about world building. Reaching across the divides to find common ground, trade, peace. I've already secured peace with ogres who guard our trade routes, giants who fish and farm in return for schooling and health. Yes, we enforce the peace too, with a swipe of an axe if neccessary. Our diplomacy is vital, the three orc tribes war among themselves. Should they unite? Do you speak Orcish? It would be a gift and wondrous boon for us, if you do.

If you want to explore locally, the dwarves remain harassed by the remnant warg riders and I believe Miss Foxy encountered trogs dwelling in caves near the Kings mine. A famed wizard of old now studies in the Dwarf palace, apprentice to him. There are rumours of renegade mages who trade children for arcane power in some temple ruin beyond the cursed wasteland."

Bremen raises an eyebrow at the lumberjack's attacks, but decides to take the high road in the conversation. For now. Amistad, while I was speaking to the merits of our differing paths, you have decided to slander my person. Surely you are thinking of someone else, or else merely repeating lies you have heard elsewhere.

I have liberated items from tombs when they were filled with the undead, one such tomb lies beneath this very Tower. As we all know, Baudh is wrathful against the undead. I have brought order and justice back to the Yoldessi Plains. And if my men were hunted and killed by a beast and died, then it is our duty to secure the plains for the safety of the weak.

As to speaking orc, well... I do. I speak their words and their true language, which is war. I learned that in the southlands while protecting peasants, farmers, and their wives. I wish you well, and won't be surprised when you come back with blood on your axe and an army on your heels.

He turns back to Tanor. As I was saying, there are ancient places, long abandoned, out here, secrets and gold, all waiting to be discovered. And old horrors waiting to be put to rest. You would be welcome to join me.

Baxtaw enters the tavern to squench his dry throat. Hearing half of Bremens speech. Bremen, who slanders your good name. I fought beside this man. The armor he wears is proof of that. Show me the man or women who has done this and I will escort them out of your lands. he looks around the tavern.

I really didn't mean to start any of this. I just wanted to let Tanor know of more possibilities IC.
No player versus players stuff, I hope

Bremen waves it off. No need for that, Baxtaw. Amistad and I were only discussing the merits of different life possibilities. The truth is that we are both looking to the security of our lands. As long as you're here though, allow me to introduce you. Bremen explains that Baxtaw was with him when Scatha, the red dragon, was killed. And that Amistad is known to have killed an ancient troll with the willworker, Eric, and two juvenile green dragons singlehandedly. The truth is, Tanor, there are many ways to make your mark here if you have the nerve. A year ago each of us came North with nothing but a few belongings. He buys a round and supper for the six people at the table.

10 go deducted for 6 mugs of dwarven lager, one bottle of southern wine, and 6 good meals, plus tip.

Lug wanders in from the festival just in time to see Bremen and Amistad arguing.

"Hey, are you guys gonna fight?" he asks, gleeful at the possibility. "I've got 100 gold on Bremen if you do!"

Tanor allows the fervor to die down before answering Bremen. I'm a willworker, though newly apportioned as such. I have little yet in the way of true power so I'm not sure how much help I would be to your hunt.

He turns to Amistad. Or to your diplomatic mission, as I don't speak orcish.

I do, however, speak goblin, which is why I thought to focus on them first. Although from what I have heard, speaking with them seems to accomplish little.

Tanor pauses for a moment before continuing. I thank you both for your offers and I will consider them carefully. You also mentioned a Miss Foxy? Who is she?

Ms. O'Hare? She's the red-headed woman that is in the joust. She has come back nearly dead from at least two of her adventures, and many of those that have accompanied her have died. Such are the risks of this life. She has said she will be hunting an order of willworkers, and their masters out west.

That said, if you want more information about her, I'd suggest looking up my Marshall, Sir Branson. They had an intimate history.

As for what you can offer, Mr. Baxtaw here has shown me what is possible with his sleeping spells. Very useful. And from what he says, that is one of his weaker spells!

Anforthas

Anforthas enters the tavern, goes directly to the bar, orders a beer and then approaches the group, since Lord Bremen told him he was looking for people to send off on a mition. Almost ignoring the others in the group, he stares at Lord Bremen, and says: "I await your orders milord."

1sp for a mug of dwarven lager deducted.
