"Major," he says, "has reconnaissance determined if the depot has any other defenses, such as minefields or gun emplacements?"
Negative Lieutenant, the storage depots were created to store coal and large mining machinery and were commandeered when the military decided to stash equipment. It was apparently a hasty decision and the depots were not retrofitted.

Eugene nods. "Understood, sir. One last question, if I may; do you want us to drop the raid salvage at the DropShip before linking up with the rest of the company? The extra weight could be a liability during combat operations."

the major pulls up a map and overlays lines. (it looks much better than my crude representation.)

Shortly after leaving the landing zone your lance will break off to raid the heat sink storage building. Along the path we will be taking to the main storage facility we will be passing the foothills of a small mountain range. We will identify a rally point in the mountains in case things go south.

Once identified Sergeant Major Marphy will relay the longitude and latitude, and that is where you will place the raided supplies.

David merely glances at the Leutnant with a slight shake of his head to indicate he has no other questions.

Well if we have to fall back whatever the easiest way to get back to the designated rally point is what you should use. That would be determined by sensor readouts and circumstances on the ground as they occur.

If we have to bypass the primary rally point and have to bug out, the the dropship landing zone will be our secondary rally point.

Ivan "Very well sir. One last question if we should find more hostiles than is expected, and cannot fall back easily, what can we expect for reinforcements and how far out will they be sir?"

The major chuckles

We're it, we are 3 jumps deep into Free world space on a raiding mission. If worse comes to worse in a situation we can't handle we will switch our objective from a snatch and grab to fire and forget.

We will target the supply depots for destruction and bug out.

Ivan nods accepting the answer "Understood and thank you sir." though in his mind he is thinking "challenge accepted." as he smiles and pulls out a cigar unlit to chew on.

Stardate: August 29 3029
Aboard the Jumpship Astra, In orbit of the planet Sackville in the Free Worlds League

The last 9 days have seemed to take forever. After the briefing the excitement began and the waiting for this day has seemed to take an eternity.

For Ivan it has been a couple of years since he has seen combat and for his lance mates this will mark the first time they have ever had true face to face action outside the academy simulators.

Ivan looks over the freshmeat in their mechwarrior spandex and cooling vests. Their knives and pistols strapped to the vest and small duffel of gear that will go behind their pilot’s chair.
Hope they all are able to keep their cool when the real lasers start flying and the heat shoots up in their battle machine. He thinks to himself.

Eugene, the young lieutenant, goes over the company call signs one more time and silently whispers formation commands as he runs scenarios in his head.

Zeke the ever cool character shows for the first time a bit of nervousness as his foot taps unconsciously.

And David flips through the communication protocols one last time.

Finally the call comes over the Jumpships comm.

All mechwarriors report to your mechs and prepare for departure.”

The young warriors grab there gar and head through the dicking tunnel to the dropship. They climb the ladders to their cockpits, buckle in, close their hatches, and fire up their war machines.

Each mechs display comes to life as the blueish hue of the LED’s signal all sensors ready. They see on their screen their designations for this assignment. This is the code that will represent them on the battle computers of their and the fusiliers company mechs that will identify them as friendlies.

Eugene – P1
Ivan – P2
David – P3
Zeke – P4

The dropship lurches as it detaches from the jumpship and gently floats away before triggering its jets to descend to the planet’s surface.

The travel time is nerve racking and the small cockpit of the mechs seem to close in even more locked in a mech bay unable to move. Finally you feel the dropship shiver as the reverse thrusters kick on and the ship lands with a thud that slams you down in your seat as in touches down.

The familiar voice of your major comes alive over the comm.

Crusader units all switch to channel Vee Delta, we will be exiting first. Fire lance, followed by command lance, then pursuit lance, closing with Pegasus platoon.”

Your mech bay doors open and you wait until your designated turn to walk down the ramp on the dropship onto a planet’s surface, the first time in nearly a month.

You see a blue but somewhat hazy sky and you are on a plain where all the grass has turned brown. You see a few snowflakes hitting your cockpit windows and you can tell there is a chill in the air. In the distance you see mountains the tips disappearing into the clouds.

You wait as the Fusiliers disembark and begin the march towards you objective. Your mechs rumble across the flat and rocky earth the only sound the hum of the fusion engines in your ears, through your neural helmets.

Before long you reach the designated point where your lance is to break off.

Dagger take your lance and hit your objective. We will communicate the rally point to you so you can do a supply drop then double back to the formation.” You hear the majors voice instruct.

You begin the 50 klick journey to the mining facility and store house that is your objective.

After approximately 40 minutes your map indicates the target is only a kilometer away, that is when your sensors kick in and light up your screen.

You have company

remember your individual unit designation, this will continue in the depot battle thread
