Per the other conversation, lets look at our Squad Goals (snerk) and do a strategic pause before "session 2."

When this session started, all we knew was:
  • We were going to a dwarven monastery about which there was no lore.
  • It was rumored to contain mushrooms for which there is a cash reward.
  • We found it easily on the other side of the forest.
Thus, our goals were:
Thag: I will destroy the evil tainting this place.
Aiofe: I will test my strength against a worthy foe.
Allric: I will acquire the magical antecedents I require from this dwarven ruin.
Berenwald: I will find clues that will lead me to Trevor.
Rabon: I will take what I can of value from this dwarf hold.
Galen: I will map this ruin.
Approaching the end of Session 1, we now know:
  • This place is somehow associated with dwarven kings.
  • The dwarves here basically gave up on life, producing crap quality weapons.
  • It contains wolves, spiders, and kobolds, and a werewolf as a Big Bad.
Did I miss anything important? We do scroll a lot of posts and we should make sure we're captured the GM's tidbits.

Supposing we beat the werewolf and get the mushrooms, we've worked towards or accomplished almost all of those.

Berenwald: You chose to give the GM a trigger, that you'd like evidence that Trevor is somehow involved worked into this storyline. We might not be there yet, but I am not sure that we got GM confirmation that he's willing to make that possible as a player-agreement. (It's poor form to allow a Goal to stand that is ruled impossible for the session.) It would be good for Berry to suspect/look at various times to try and pursue this more actively.

Galen: Per the other thread, we can look for a way to make your goal more active/less passive. Your character's belief is about Direct Action against evil forces. He has travelled the world, experienced and even learned the language of orcs, and returned Scarred by the experience. How does that impact him now that he knows a bit more about the nature of this ruin?

Somehow I had managed to miss the mushroom stuff when I wrote my goal, but even with that, the above isn't quite enough of a hook for Galen, and clearly contributes to my feeling un-engaged...

Well, if there's some tie between werewolves and orcs (I forget, are kobolds at all tied to orcs in Torchbearer?), or Galen can broaden his perception of evil. It does help now to know the ruin is occupied by something evil (course we should have assumed that...).

Of note, you didn't find the monastery easily. You just didn't have to roll for it. Finding your way back without trouble might take a little work.

Thag is a major fighter - I think we need him to have a satchel and not a backpack so he doesn't take -1D to Fighter skill. Thag and Aiofe each have rope.

We never resolved this, and I think we need to do so to make sure our equipment is accurate and our sheets are finally final.

Outstanding questions:
Berry began carrying Thag's lantern, but Thag's inventory still shows that he's storing it in his pack (with one slot when it requires two). As listed, this means that we're now carrying THREE lanterns (Thag, Berry, and Galen).

The proposal was to have Thag give away the lantern, switch to a satchel (gaining a torso slot back), put rope on his now-free shoulder and then store his three remaining slots [Preserved rations (3), Preserved rations (3) Oil Flask (2)] in the satchel. He doesn't even need to give up his quiver, but it means that he started with it empty (two more free spots he should've put something.)

We need to decide this because his Backpack being a factor, and Bill constantly having to worry about if he could set his backpack down (and risk losing it) before every conflict, is a big deal. We tried to resolve this proactively by switching him to a satchel; I don't know if we didn't do so purposefully or by accident.

Bill - is Thag intentionally carrying the backpack with extra space in it (a man of optimism)? Or are you willing to switch to a satchel as one of our major fighters?

If the latter, then we should update your sheet. Perhaps this, as you already assumed you brought torches.

  • Thag and Galen have Tinderboxes. Not hurting to have more than one.
  • Aiofe and Berry have iron spikes. Aiofe's 6 spikes were used in the tower (not currently on sheet, can be reclaimed).
  • Allric has a mirror and holy water. (I really, really regret waffling on the choice to bring Wolfsbane, now.)
  • Galen and Berry both have lanterns (and potentially Thag). Okay to have a spare?

Also, I know it's crazy late, but Berry should choose a new Goal. There's NO chance of finding anything about Trevor here. He's going to need to throw Circles at this if he wants to find this guy.

I could switch to a satchel, but don't want to do it during the adventure session, that just doesn't seem right. If we find a satchel out in the wild, or we get to a town I'll switch it. If we get to a town I'm also hoping to get some leather armour, so I will probably have to switch to a satchel.

But isn't it part of the fun dealing with our choices for gear? We're not "hired" adventurers with gear provided by an employer, we're a ragtag bunch of scoundrels bringing our own stuff.

For the next session, if I remove my two sets of rations from my quiver and toss one, or give it to someone, and keep the other in a satchel then that frees up the quiver to hold two things. Four torches count as one, don't they? So I could carry 8, and still have two satchel slots. I would not have a lantern, oil, or rope though.

That's fair. The proposal was from August 20th, though, so I thought we handled it before the adventure phase. Berry has been role-playing carrying the lantern this whole time as a result.

So, I guess the only question to reconcile is: did Thag begin with a third lantern in his pack and one empty slot, or did he give the lantern to Berry and start with three empty slots?

You know, I want to help, but I don't quite understand what the problem is right now.

That said, no link between orcs and werewolves. The closest thing like that would be dire wolves acting as orc and goblin mounts.

Just thinking about these:

Nature Question Answer: "If you confront evil, your Nature and Fighter remain unchanged."

Scarred trait: "Survivors of terrible wars are often scarred by their experiences. They’re tough and not easily flustered by injury or fear, but they are also maimed or psychologically scarred by their experiences."

And his Orc-wise.

But if there's no connection between werewolves and orcs, I'll find something else for a potential new goal when the time comes.

I've added the helmet to Rabon's sheet. Not hard currency, but of value, so I think he's achieved his goal. Or at least worked towards it.

Can someone with extra space as the weapon honing kit, please?

We could use a check in camp to alter the backpack to a satchel for Thag. Peasant or Weaver or Laborer as help for a Beginners Luck test?
