Need your feedback on these points before we begin...

My goal is that this encounter should be fun, interesting and interactive:
  • I prefer to make this a more challenging combat encounter, as it will likely be the climax of this adventure.
  • I considered making the big bad guy a Skeletal Warrior, which is a 9HD monster, see the Monster Manual for details. That means an average of 43 hp, take a look at this random distribution of 9+2HD.

I really like the idea of the necromancer raising this Skeletal Warrior and controlling it through a golden circlet. I would use the rules, as published, in the Manster Manual for the control of the monster. However, Here are my concerns with this proposal.

Based on the monster description in the Monster Manual:
  • Only magical weapons affect skeleton warriors.
  • They have a 90% magical resistance.
  • The mere sight of a skeleton warrior causes any creature with fewer than 5 Hit Dice to flee in panic.
  • Skeleton warriors cannot be turned by priests.

I am open to modifying the published rules to make this a reasonably enjoyable combat encounter but would like your feedback. If you are up for this challenge, I would love to run this, or modify it accordingly. Please respond by Monday night, Jul 31, with a expected start date of Tue night Aug 1

You can do whatever you like, but likely we will be either easly killed or just run in fear as is. we are not high enough level and have no magical weapons to affect it.

Agreed, a bit out of our league. Maybe just a more powerful skeleton that has more HD and we can't turn it? That way we can still damage it but it won't be so easy to deal with.

from the description it sounds more like this death knight, is some kind of mini-lich and probably has the necromancer under his spell and charisma. Creatures with spell resistance are also difficult to attack, it means whatever a mage throws at it, the warrior has a 90% chance of dismissing the spell effects and then if you get lucky, most spells require a saving throw so you can be doubly penalised. Unless you have a bath of holy water to throw over it or going native and entice it to fall into a deep pit, I think low characters are not able to engage such.
