Question - if we save vs. paraylsis, we aren't gagging but we still can't speak spells/prayers until we free our hands right? One more complication, as if you need one: you can't attack or cast spells with material or somatic components while using both arms and almost all your strength just to keep your head above water. That means that Hallagad, Rool, Risdac, Malibran, and Tanner (currently sinking) cannot attack or cast spells until they find some way to free their hands without sinking and drowning.

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
yikes - that's quite a welcoming committee!!
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Right. If you fail the save, you can't attack even if you find some way not to be swimming. If you make the save, you still have the swimming to deal with, and attack at -2 if you can find some way to deal with the water.

Brutal it is - and we just got started!
The water is fiendish, actually. Completely escalates the futility challenge level of this encounter.

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Yeah. It's amazing how putting an encounter in water can completely neutralize high-level players who didn't prepare for it. I'm really curious what you folks are going to come up with.

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Well I am guessing since two of us are on dry land and a wall of fire is between us and them we can't see whats going on as of yet is that correct?

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Good point. And the roar of the flames probably masks some of the sound coming from the other side, though you might have heard the fireball go "fwoosh."
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
The vulture demons are on Xale's side of the flame wall, correct?
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Nope. Xale and Odilo are aft ("south") of the flame wall, on the ledge that runs across the width of the room. The vulture demons are in the central corridor to the fore ("north"), on ledges about 20' above the water. The "hot" side of the wall faces Xale and Odilo - not that it matters much with their rings.Rex wrote:The vulture demons are on Xale's side of the flame wall, correct?

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Well i had a plan but not sure this will really work I could cast Bigby's Grasping Hand to try and grab Hallagad out of the water and get him over to our side of the wall of fire.... but when reading the description of the spell I don't think that Grasping Hand works in this manner.... thoughts anyone?

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
The problem with that idea, other than whether the spell can pull someone toward you instead of pushing them away, is that you need line of sight.
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
I can get us through the wall of fire with the cube of force, but we would have to swim and I think that is a bad idea. I have no real way to attack or get to the action (I think they are out of my 60' hammer range). If they could use the cube we could use Bigby's Hand to get it I think.

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
I had also thought of trying to extinguish the wall of fire but i don't have dispel magic in my book or memorized i could try and use one of my ice based spells to put the flames out i suppose but i don't want to risk it effecting Hallagad. I could cast fly on myself and try flying over the flames ideally though I'd rather try and get Hallagad out of the water and away from whatever punched him in the water.

Re: Ch. 3: Hell's Bells
I'm seeing several Hs on the map. Which one is Hallagad? Also there are some Vs and Ws. What are those? I couldn't be sure, though I may be missing something...
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Yeah, I tried to size and color-code that and it didn't work. Hallagad is the H to the farthest left. The H in the center passage is the frog thing. The H near Hallagad should have had a different initial, and probably shouldn't be on the map at all because Hallagad has only felt an attack so far, not seen its source. The Vs are the vulturemen. The W is the serpent thingy.
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Hell's Bell's indeed!
Happy new year, everyone.
The Unseen Servant appears to have been hit by a breath weapon and a fireball.
Zhym, here's what PHB p. 30 says about Monks and those sorts of things:
Once I hear back, I'll post IC - assuming it's necessary, given Malibran's timely wish.
Thanks.

Not sure if that arcane rule was already factored in? Thanks....if a monk makes his or her saving throw against an attack form, the monk will sustain no damage from the attack, even if the attack f0rm was a fireball, for instance. At 9th level (Master of the North Wind) or higher, a monk who fails to make his or her saving throw will still sustain but one-half the total potential damage which the attack form could deliver, if possible. That is, a fireball would do 50% of total damage...

Thanks.
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Oh, right. Monks are weird.
He took no damage from the fireball. I also forgot to roll saves vs. the breath weapon. Both Malibran and Khogeki made their saves, reducing Malibran's damage in half (to 6) and eliminating all Khogeki's damage.
I've updated the post accordingly.

Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
Thanks. I know I struggle to keep tabs of all the rules and gear for the 3rd level PCs in my games. I can't imagine tracking it at this level.
Also, on PHB, p. 31, there's this tidbit re: the Servant's plummet down the waterfall.

Not sure how close he was to the walls near the waterfall, or if the waterfall itself could serve. Thanks. At 13th level (Moster of Winter), a monk can fall any distance if he or she is within 8' of a wall.
The monk must have an opportunity to periodically make contact with the wall during the descent.
Re: OOC Discussion and Table Talk
I'm going to say the waterfall prevented the monk from making helpful contact with the wall (or any other wall in the 20'x20' shaft).
