Biddle begins tapping on the wall with a firm, rhythmic beat, trying to get a response.

When Weeba motions Digsby to hang back, the diminutive gardener stops at the last door and places his ear against the wooden portal. He sets the lantern on the floor with his right foot in front of it to shield some of the light projected down the passage towards the intersection. Digsby unlimbers his shovel from the carrier on his back and holds it in his right hand. Thus positioned he hopes to be able to hear anything coming from down the hall or behind the door.

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 13)

Image

Weeba the warrior creeps toward the intersection and listens intently in the dark. With the lanterns left behind and dimmed, Weeba can make out only dark shadows playing off the walls of the tunnel, but . He strains his ears and determines without any doubt that the sound is definitely not coming from up this way.

Digsby settles beside the door and listens carefully into that room, while blocking some of the lantern's light emissions down the hall. The sound is definitely not coming from within, and he doesn't think he can hear any other noises—or perhaps some pitter-patter just there—but now Biddle begins rapping on the wall and he can no longer concentrate.

Biddle taps the west and south wall of the tunnel, soliciting a response. The noises stop short for a moment then resume, making it quite clear that they are coming from behind this wall in the corner. After a few more knocks the shuffling and crunching both stop again, followed by a pregnant pause, a belch loud enough to hear through the wall, and a raspy voice saying, "Go away. Busy."

Weeba waits until he is sure there is no noise up here, then motions for the party to join him.

OOC: He may not have noticed the voice from behind the wall back there.

At Weeba's gesture, Digsby picks up the lantern in his left hand and quietly strides up the passage. "I think Doughty's found something back there," he motions back down the tunnel with his shovel, "At least he was talking to someone through the wall. Perhaps we should check it out before we leave parties unknown behind us?"

"There are parties unknown all around us, but sure," Weeba says, returning toward the bulk of the party.

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 13.1)

Image

The party convenes at the corner of the tunnel's west-north turn, talking to the wall.

The muffled voice on the other side responds, "Granola? Hmm… Give a minute." After a few more strange noises, and the sound of heavy furniture dragging across stone floor, a portion of the south wall falls away magically, as though individual bricks are being sucked up into wall to either side.

Standing in the secret doorway is a pale and fetid individual, covered in scaly scabs and plump pustules. His mouth and hands are covered in blood and bits of fat. Behind him you see a room full of furniture of all kinds, and the corpses of four swarthy hobbits geared up for adventure lying in a half-eaten pile.

The ghoulish creature wipes raw meat from his mouth and snarls, showing jagged teeth like razors. "Someone say something about granola?"

Despite being open to most any dish, Doughty is extremely out of by seeing his own kind lying in a heap, freshly eviscerated. Didn't even cook them... runs through his head. He pulls out a small pouch of granola and holds it in his hand as he backs away from the ghoul, hoping to let it to turn it's back on the others. Yessir! I did mention scrumptious morsels of oats and nuts, baked to a golden brown with honey. And I wouldn't mind giving you this sample to taste test, good sir. He switches hands frequently to keep the ghoulish creature's attention. Tell me. Are you an afficianado of breakfast cereals? (Not that granola is just a morning meal, mind you.)

If this thing turns to follow the hobbit, Weeba will leap forward and hack it down.

Digsby quietly sets his lantern down and takes a firmer grip on his shovel. Certain events are about to take a turn for the more adventuresome, the gardener readies himself to apply spade to skull.

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 13.1, combat round 1)

Image

Doughty attempts to distract the gross ghoul with his bag of granola, and works remarkably well; in fact, it works a little too well. The foul fiend inches forward, his bloodshot eyes following the granola back and forth. His clawed fingers reach out and he licks his scabby lips, while Doughty taunts him with decadent descriptions of that sweet, crunchy food these wild and barbaric Eastlanders hold so inexplicably dear.

"Yes, scrumptious morsels. Good seasoning for fresh bodies. Yummy cereal meal, let me taste. Yes! Give them!! MUST HAVE IT!"

Now slavering quite madly, the starving ghoul lurches forward with startling speed, his razor-lined maw snapping at the granola and Doughty's hand!
(Weeba and Digsby: each please make a Level 2 Saving Roll for Dexterity, modified by Luck — [1d6]+[1d6], DARO, plus DX score, plus number of points of LK over 12, vs 25. If both SRs fail, then Doughty will have to make his own save vs getting his hand bitten off).

Already prepared for the worst, both Weeba and Digsby leap in to save the day! With a resounding clonk on the head and a whistling slash through the ribs, the two adventurers batter the monster back, though to their shock no blood comes pouring forth from its wounds, but only a few small droplets of some oozing, rather foul-smelling and sticky brown sap.
(Party wins combat round, ghoul takes 13 hits, party takes no spite damage)

The creepy creature hisses in pain and contempt, and with a bone-chilling popping sound it dislocates its jaw like a snake, allowing it to swallow limbs and heads whole! Looking within you see more glistening teeth than you ever knew could fit into one mouth.

Actions?

Combat rolls for round 1…
Ghoul: [1d6] = 4+[1d6] = 5+[1d6] = 1+14 = 24 hit points against Doughty

Weeba: [1d6] = 6 + [1d6] = 1 + [1d6] = 1 + [1d6] = 2 + 10 = 22 hit points
Digsby: [1d6] = 1 + [1d6] = 2 + [1d6] = 4 + [1d6] = 3 + 5 = 15 hit points
37 hit points total)

37 - 24 = The ghoul takes 13 hits. The party takes no spite damage

OOC - well, if we're under way again, might as well start as I'd like to carry on...

IC- "Take That, Old Bean!" Biddle snorts off a TTYF.

As the foul creature lunges at Doughty aiming to snap up the golden granola, Digsby seeks to intervene with a sweep of his shovel to the knees.

(DEX SR): (15)+[1d6] = 3+[1d6] = 4 (+LK modifier of 0) = 22

Weeba rolls:

Save (DX) [1d6] = 5 + [1d6] = 6 + 17
I make that a 27, before other modifiers.

Weeba grabs Doughty roughly by the collar and yanks him out of the way! The ghoul's maw snaps shut on the pouch of granola, splashing undead spittle across the hobbit's arm, but for now he is safe from the creature's lethal jaws.

Despite its wounds, the ghoul appears to be single-minded in its gluttonous rage! Its huge, expanded mouth slavers away as it looks for another hapless victim!

(Aside from normal combat, there is a random chance that one person engaging in melee will have to save vs being chewed on)

Doughty becomes indignant. Well I never! It was a sample! You ate the whole bag, you brute! Doughty throws two knives or two at the ghoul.

Throw 1: SPD 13, [1d6] = 4, [1d6] = 5 = 22
Throw 2: SPD 13, [1d6] = 2, [1d6] = 3 = 18

Don't know if he can throw 2. Maybe that was because the orc was charging before... At any rate, he threw at least one knife.

Digsby lets the momentum of his missed slice-at-the-knees carry the shovel up and around. Rather than fighting the tools weight he makes it work for him guiding instead of wrestling the momentum. The gardner-cum-sapper shifts his hands on the leather wrapped handle and rams the blade home - right into the ghouls slavering maw! "Eat This!"

(Warshovel) [1d6] = 5+[1d6] = 6+[1d6] = 2+[1d6] = 1(+3) (+1 add) = 18 - To the Face!

I assume Biddle's TTYF worked...

He will now slash at the fiend, aiming to hamstring it. Do I need a DEX SR?
