02. New Situation at the Falls

Before Garth even has a chance to respond, a flury of movement is detected by all from the base of the waterfall as four rapidly moving beasts erupt from the mouth of the cave. It quickly becomes evident that these quadruped creatures, which you suspect are wolves, are being ridden by spear-wielding goblins.


Already in a state of relatively high alert after the drum beating, the group is prepared and able to make a single round of action before the beasts are upon you.

"Quick! Form up about 15 feet behind the orcs. Maybe one of those wolves will stop for an easy meal. If you don't have something else in mind, grab a spear and set it against their charge."

He then fires two arrows at the approaching goblins/wolves as he takes his own advice and moves back behind the bound orcs.

To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+4] = 4+4 = 8

To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+4] = 10+4 = 14
Damage, Flight Arrow [1d6] = 6

(The first one is definitely a miss, especially given the distance penalties. The second... assuming it is later in the round and the goblins/wolves have advanced to reduce distance penalties, has a better chance of being a hit.)

After he fires his second arrow, he'll shoulder his bow and draw his scimitar.

(I imagine setting a spear in the next round would only work for him if the party won initiative; otherwise, I'd have Gwilt do the same thing.)

The unidentified human echos the alert issued by Gwillt: "Ware! Attack from the falls!", he shouts. Instead of setting a spear, however, he quickly draws his bow and fires two shots at the rightmost approaching wolf.

"I've got the wolf to the right!" he states matter-of-factly.

Strom scowls at the notion of hiding behind the helpless Orcs. He positions himself in front of the Orcs and sets his spear to receive the incoming charge.

Not to be outdone by a common, gallant, holy knight wannabe, Ewell quickly positions himself safely in front of the orcs (beyond where they could attack from the rear in their bound state) with his shield up and lance braced to handle the charge.

Ewell looks confused and nodsHealing? You a doctor? I could definitely use a bit if you time and energy to spare.
Normally I would say to keep the spell for emergencies, but with Ewell's knack for finding damage, probably better to keep the gas tank full as possible.


Dusk? shall we do something with teh orcs, and find a spot in the woods to camp for the night?

Nice shooting... I think they were so scared of running into Ewell, they just ran right into your arrow...

Garth has no silly notion of honor, he is more than willing the draw his scimitar and stand behind the prisoners, awaiting the approach of the riders.

He also watches to see if the orcs attempt to escape.

Noted. Just to make sure everyone is still on the same page, this was Kaltar's last spell for the day, and Ewell will now have 10 hit points.

Thanks, you saved me from having to point this out.

A natural 20 roll is worth 20 experience points (not listed in the rules) and does maximum damage. When you roll a natural 20, you roll your to-hit again: A hit turns your maximum damage into maximum damage * 1.5 and a second natural 20 will result in double-damage. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm thinking I will make consecutive natural 20's worth 50, or even 100 experience points.

Gwillt calls out orders as the emerging goblin riders approach. Using his ranged capabilities to take advantage of the distance separating the groups, he quickly fires off two arrows. The first sails harmlessly over the head of the second goblin/worg combination, but his second arrow sinks deep into the chest of the goblin rider (g2). The goblin is rocked backwards and drops its spear, but somehow manages to not only survive the attack, but stay mounted... barely.

The Unidentified Human echos Gwillt's warning, announcing his intention to target the rightmost goblin/worg pair. Two arrows are sent flying without hesitation. The first arrow sticks the goblin rider (g4), wounding it deeply, but (again) somehow not killing it. His second arrow is also true; plunging deeply into the right shoulder of the oncoming worg (w4). The worg reels slightly, almost throwing its already wounded goblin rider, but quickly elects to continue its charge.

Shannigans keeps up with the airel assault and launches an arrow at the center, right goblin/worg pair before dashing for cover behind the orcish prisoners. With pin-point placement, Shannigans' arrow splits the eyes of the goblin rider (g3) sending it toppling over backwards and crashing hard into the earth after being violently dismounted. The worg, momentarily confused, slows... but does resume its charge.

Much to Gwillt's dismay, Ewell and Strom fail to heed his suggestion of standing behind the row of bound orcs; instead, the stoic pair set a lance and spear respectively to receive the oncoming opponents.

Garth and Kaltar, meanwhile, prepare their weapons from behind the wall of orcs and brace for the ensuing attack!

In the same continous motion, Shannigans now does an end around so that he has a shot from the left flank at wolf and rider on the far left.
inititative [1d10] = 1 attack with shortbow [1d20] = 17
dmg [1d6] = 6

that has an inititative roll too

Sorry, Dave, so are the goblins/wargs in melee range at this point? Or still charging? I was under the impression they would be n melee range.

If they are still far enough away that Gwilt can get in a ranged attack, then would it be possible to fire again in this round and not stow my bow until the next one?

Also, nice shooting and init roll, Ston!
