Quest #13 "Luther Is On The Hunt"

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

The Lone Ranger
Moonday, the 1st of Goodmonth
Early Morning, Warm, Humid, Misty

Luther sets out early in the morning to clear his mind of the latest events and to hunt for some well needed meat for the town. He goes out alone, not because he doesn't like the others that he has met so far, quite on the contrary. He finds most of his new friends to be quite helpful at times, especially the healers. A ranger just needs to be alone in the wild from time to time. It is their way, I suppose.

He readies his gear and sharpens his tools of the trade, ready for anything the jungle has to throw at the burly bear of a human. Slipping off into the woods, he finds much of the same nearby. There are no tracks, scat, game trails, or even a tuft of fur to be found anywhere near to the town. He shakes his head at how the people here must have hunted any nearby animals to near extinction. He knows that he will need to get much further away from the settlement area if he wants to find anything still moving on 4 legs.

Then he remembers hearing something about the water gatherers running into some large beaver-like rodents about 4 miles away, near the river. Since he can't find one scratch of an animal track anywhere about the town, perhaps that might be a good place to do some tracking?

Luther

Luther rambles through the trees, enjoying the solitude and the small beauties of tropical flowers, butterflies, an odd-shaped knot on the bole of a tree: The things people have trouble slowing down to see. He heads toward the river, chewing on a grass stem.

Luther spends some alone time enjoying a few of the things that he had missed among his natural surroundings in all the latest excitement.

He is not pleased about the denuding of the nearby wildlife and edible plants, but he knows it is the way of things. Much like the animals in nature, people will always go for the easiest meals they can get first.

As he slowly makes his way east, he spots the usual team of water gatherers heading up the beach with their empty buckets. He decides to let them pass as he stays just inside the tree line to smell the exotic and strange looking flowers.

When he also starts heading towards the river behind them, the burly bear-man finds it a bit odd when he notices them turn around only half way there and start heading back towards town with no water.

Luther

Luther sighs internally, sure that this is another dose of trouble.

He moves out to intercept the water team, bow still ready and at his side. Is the reason they turned around visible? Otherwise:

Good morning. Is there a problem?

Marge steps right up to Luther once he makes his presence known to her group.

"Good morning yourself......Luther was it?"

"I don't know if it is trouble or not, but we saw something unusual up the beach and were going back to report it to Mr. Nehru. He likes to be informed right away when something might be amiss out here."

"What are you doing this far outside of town alone. Don't you think that is a little dangerous?"

Luther

Only a little. Some days, you just want to be alone. I decided to go hunting and try to fetch some more fresh meat for the village.

So what's so unusual, Marge?

Marge visibly softens her stern demeanor once Luther finishes telling her of his intentions.

"You sir are one of the good ones! A lot of folks like you come here, but the first thing they usually do is tear off into the jungle to find their fame and fortune. They don't concern themselves in the least with what goes on in the town. It warms my heart to know that you and your friends still care enough about the rest of us enough to try to help out."

Her eyes actually well up slightly as she speaks.

"I could just hug you, you big burly man!"

She turns and points back up the beach towards the river, but the vegetation this close to the tree line blocks the rangers view.

"We were fetching water, just like every other day, when we spotted something strange by the river. Normally the big ships pull up to the long floating dock in Beachtown to unload their cargo and fill up with the logs. But this one seems to be anchored just offshore, near the mouth of the river. Since I have never seen that before, I initially thought there was something wrong. That is why we were returning to town to tell Mr. Nehru what we saw."

Luther

I'm not sure I'm a 'good one', Marge. Just tryin' to not be a 'bad one'. He grins, looking about 12 years old for a second.

I'm sure Nehru and the other leader-types will want to know about the ship. I'm gonna take a closer look for myself. It's probably a good idea to avoid the river today- assuming we've got enough water to get by.

When the water team leaves, Luther fades back into the woodline, moving through the trees toward the river. He's still on the lookout for game sign, but his primary focus has shifted to the mysterious ship. When he gets close enough to see it, he'll stop and study it in detail.

"Oh, yes. We always try to have a few days worth of water in reserve. We just like to stay on top of the task, so we continue to gather every day."

"I will tell Mr. Nehru that you are looking into the ship, just don't go and get yourself killed before he can decide what to do about this."

With that, the train of empty pail carriers takes their leave and heads back into town.

After more searching for game, and coming up empty handed yet again, Luther eventually gets himself closer to his destination. Stopping about a half mile away from the mouth of the Dutty River, he now spots the big ship anchored just off shore. He cant be certain from this distance, but he thinks that this ship looks vaguely familiar. The astute ranger starts to see a few signs of normal jungle animal movement this far from town, but he still finds no definitive trails that he can follow.

Luther

Luther is curious but cautious about the ship, so far from the town. He settles in for two hours, watching activity on and around the ship. If there's nothing after two hours, he angles off into the jungle, moving away from the beach as he approaches the river.

Getting himself into a comfortable position to stake out the ship for a couple of hours, Luther learns what he can.

This ship still looks rather new to his untrained eye, causing him to recall another shiny new ship that he has seen recently.
viewtopic.php?f=477&t=6227&start=60#p291034

The stern of the ship is anchored away from the rangers current position, so he cant see the name. But, he is pretty sure it is the "Green Flash", the same boat he saw out on the open sea several days earlier. He spots a few men moving around on the empty deck occasionally, going about their usual business. He does not spot the captain or any other important looking crewmen, he only sees the few sailors bumbling around periodically.

Just as the burly human is about to start heading towards the river, he sees something strange. 2 men on a bamboo raft suddenly appear from out of the jungle. The raft has 2 large square bundles of something in between the men who are using long push poles to steer the loaded craft from the mouth of the river towards the much larger ship. They struggle initially with the slim skiff in the big waves of the open sea, but eventually get positioned at the side of the ship where ropes are then lowered down to them by the few men left on board.

The arrival of the skiff causes a few small furry jungle creatures to scatter from the mouth of the river, giving the ranger a bit of hope that there are still a few animals left to hunt around here. One pair of the fuzzy critters start making their way up the tree line, heading in the rangers direction. They look like big brown beavers with large white front teeth sticking out of their squeaking mouths.

Luther

The ranger is briefly annoyed that he has more questions than answers after two hours of watching, but his annoyance turns to relief when he sees the rodents.

He holds his arrow fire until he senses they're as close as they will get, then puts two into the larger of the critters. Will he get a bonus for a sneak attack?

attack [1d20] = 16
attack [1d20] = 3

arrow [1d6] = 4

IF they sense him and bolt, he'll still shoot as they run, but will then spring to his feet to chase them.

Luther breaths slowly and raises his bow at the oncoming capybara, firing off two arrows at the largest one as they advance to about 20 feet away. Hitting his target, the creature lets out a loud squeal of pain as the arrow tears into its hind quarters. The ranger cringes at the noise, hoping it wasn't heard by the sailors on the ship.

The squealing instantly causes the other animals to dart into the jungle for cover, but the one with the arrow sticking out of it does not flee. Instead, it spins itself around in circles in the sand, trying to free itself of the painful arrow first before trying to rush into the bush behind the others.

No "sneak" attack bonus allowed for a ranger, but you did get a free surprise round attack.

Luther's next arrow punctures the large jungle rodent right between its eyes, dropping it onto the beach and silencing it permanently.

There is no longer any sign of the other creatures that were with it except for their little tracks in the soft sand.

Looking out towards the ship again, the big bear gets the impression that his actions weren't spotted or heard by the smuggling sailors.

Luther

Luther retrieves his arrows and hangs the capybara up by its hind legs, making a quick job of draining the blood from it. He smears a bit of the blood on his own forehead as a gesture of respect for the beast, then heads back to Beachtown with his kill, moving along the shady treeline.

When he arrives at the village:
1) Contact Nehru and inform him about the Green Flash at the mouth of the river I saw the ship anchored offshore. It didn't appear to be in any sort of trouble. Is there a reason it would be so far from town- other than some sort of shady activity?

2) Carefully gut and skin his kill, saving the liver and heart to add to the meat, and the stomach and bladder for the blacksmith to make a bellows with.
3) Extract the brains to use for tanning the hide.
4) Set up one 'side' to be smoked for the Clerics.
5) Give the rest- including organ meats- to the cooks.
6) Scatter the entrails in the bay, hoping to draw new fish to the fished-out area.
7) Collapse in exhaustion....

Midday, Hot, Humid, Rainy, Less Buggy

Luther bleeds out the animal right there on the beach, showing it the utmost respect as he does so.

Thinking that he should have about 30 or 40 pounds of serviceable meat to deliver, he wastes no time getting it back to town. He doesn't think the men on the ship ever noticed him, or else they just didn't care that he was there.

He jogs back to town double timing it on his return, knowing that his meat wont last long in this hot sun. He keeps to the cover of the tree line for the most part. At one point about half way back, he hears the screeching of some horrible thing above the trees of the jungle forest, but is pleased that whatever was making the noise never shows itself.

Once back to town, he dresses out his kill and gets the many parts delivered to the right places. The cooks at the fire pit are impressed with the good meat and tell the burly man to bring back more anytime. Nearly exhausted, the ranger goes off to see Mr. Nehru before calling it a day.

Luther

When he's done with his work for the day, Luther walks into the shallows of the bay to wash off the blood and sweat- keeping an eye out for any large creatures that may be drawn to the fresh blood.

He settles down in his shack to relax and think about his day- and drops off to sleep almost immediately, sitting against the wall of his shack with dagger and whetstone in hand.
