I'm not 100% sure, either... there's a little switch. Opening the door would flip the switch. Rojo tried to flip it without opening the door (so, say, a crossbow trap would trigger and hit the door instead of him). My understanding is that the switch can't be engaged this way (the door is in the way), or bypassed (the door is too close to get it around the switch).

Do we want to just open the door and deal with the trap? Get most everyone out of the way, etc?

Sounds good. Perhaps crack it open by hand, and then use a sword or other longer item to swing it the rest of the way.

The door is currently closed. The switch is under the door and sticks up into a depression in the bottom of the door. Opening the door will flip the switch. Closing the door will flip the switch back to its current position.

No problem. One of the problems with PbP is that you can't see confusion if a player doesn't understand what the GM is trying to convey. :lol:

Just to point out one of the interesting things about C&T, if you hadn't noticed. We can all look for traps. Rojo just has a bonus on the roll...

Very correct. Everyone can look for traps, but only Rogues get a bonus.

Sorry about that GW. One of the strengths of C&T is that anyone can attempt ANY skill that anyone else can do. The difference is that anyone who has a skill as a strength of their class, like Rogues and thieves skills, has a bonus while everyone else has a straight roll. Mechanically it defines how Howard used Conan. Yes he was a barbarian but in the stories did many things that thieves could do in game. AD&D defined Conan by giving him a couple of levels in Thief along with his levels of Barbarian but here that is not necessary.

Here is the example from the rulebook:

For example, Nibold the Purple, a bold roguish warrior, is attempting to swim across a dangerous rushing river. Because Nibold is a fifth level character his base Skill number is 11. The Crypt Keeper judges that superior strength would assist anyone attempting such a feat, and allows the Player to apply Nibold’s strength bonus, in this case +1, to the Skill Test roll. Because the river is flowing swiftly, and contains dangerous rocks and currents, the Crypt Keeper assigns a -2 penalty to the Player’s roll. Finally, the Crypt Keeper notes Nibold’s life event as a Pirate and applies a further +4 bonus to the roll. This leaves the Player with a net +3 bonus to his Skill Test roll for Nibold. The Player rolls a 10 and adds 3 for a total of 13. Since that exceeds Nibold’s Skill Number of 11, Nibold successfully swims across the river. If the Player had failed his roll, the Crypt Keeper may have decided that Nibold suffered 1D6 points of damage from being bashed about the rocks by the stream’s strong currents. A roll of a natural 1 may have resulted in Nibold being knocked unconscious, and likely drowning, unless rescued by his compatriots (assuming that he has some nearby!).

So back to the skill at hand, everyone at 1st level has a base Skill number of 15. Anyone can look for traps applying their roll + their Dex mod vs. 15. Rojo, being a thief, gets a further modifier of +3 to his roll to beat the TN of 15.

I hope everyone is ok with how I'm handling the detection and disarming of traps. I've seen too often in games where the rolls are handled in the open and everyone knows whether the result is a success or failure. I.e. the thief rolls to detect traps and fails. As such, he (a specialist in this area) declares there are no traps. Now everyone tip-toes around because they are afraid there is a trap present even though the specialist has declared the area free of such. Same thing happens with removing traps. The thief fails and then everyone knows the trap is still armed even though no one would know. That is why I handle rolls of that type.

I think it's great. When I've dm'ed here, I've even used a different dice roller ID my inquisitive players couldn't check (dunno if you went that far... didn't look). I'm assuming that Rojo's difficulty with bypassing the door switch was a failed disarm roll?

Folks, I'm afraid I need to drop the game. Summer work is particularly taxing, this year (in a good way—I'm working on a big project that that's really chewing up the ol' imagination), and I just don't have the mental space to keep up with the number of games I've been playing.

I've become a big fan of the C&T system and, I've been really enjoying the chance to explore a classic like the Lost City (I've been sitting on an unread copy so as not spoil it for myself). This game has been a lot of fun, and I'll miss it.

Feel free to NPC Vermil, or send him off into the desert, or use him to trigger traps. Just remember that he's the most annoying person you ever met, and no one should feel bad when he dies.
