The chest is secured with a large padlock.
The three barrels hold, in turn, what appears to be clear water, what appears to be dirty water, and a sour-smelling ale.

Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
Odo checks the large padlock for traps. He's not sure whether it's trapped or not, but he tries to pick the lock anyway.
Find Traps (1-52=success): [1d100] = 63
Pick Locks (1-32=success): [1d100] = 49
"Sorry, lads. I can't figure this one out. But if the big brute locked his stuff in here, he must have hidden a key somewhere, right?"

Ya, nothing happened the first 2 or 3 times I posted it, so I thought I could hit him while he was dead! As the druid had already finished him off, I assumed the cleric would hold his action.

Bror watches as Odo plays with the locks.

Thurwin - Wizard
Thurwin winces at the fallen corpse of the ogre, then he shrugs and says "perhaps he does have a key someplace." And he'll start to search for the key... UGH.

Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
No key is found on the ogre's person or anywhere obvious in the room.
Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
"Perhaps there is a key in one of those barrels?" Effric says. He looks in the one that has clear water, then tips the other two over.

Thurwin shrugs in resignation at the locked chest and then he stands watch, anxiously fiddling with his staff.

Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
A mix of dank water and poor ale fill the room. It's not a good smell.
The wooden chest grows damp on the bottom.
A small thud is heard in the dirty-water barrel and a glance within shows the glint of a key.
The key fits the lock nicely and the chest opens to reveal a brass candlestick (worth 1 ep), a rusted saw, 419 cp, 282 sp, 23 ep, 133 gp, and 4pp all sitting on various items of apparel which are beginning to get damp as the liquid soaks through the wood bottom.

Odo picks up the lock and key and starts fiddling with them, trying to puzzle out where his lock-picking attempt went wrong.

The Gnome stares at Odo because he is quite fond of gizzmos and gadgets, but he doesn't want to be rude, so tries to hide his interest, "Well, now where, my friends?"

Thurwin - Wizard
Thurwin points toward the spiked concealed door to the south and says "We could check that. Although after finding what was behind this spiked door, I think we should investigate that portal and what lies beyond before we proceed."
OOC: We could check it, but it's spiked for a reason, so we need to be cautious. The thought of that mean old troll wandering keeps me thinking we'll encounter him eventually.
BTW - I updated the spoils thread with the ogre's meager loot

"Yes, I agree! I worry about that overgrown, swag-bellied maggot-pie, too! Let's leave it spiked for now, and poke around where this big dim-wit came from." the Gnome mutters with bitterness, pointing at the Ogre's corpse.
Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
Odo can't figure out why his piking efforts failed before. He can pick the lock now, well about a third of the time, but there doesn't appear to be anything special about the construction. He just needs to get better a lock picking...
The spike is cautiously removed and the door inspected. There is no lock and the door opens inward, although it might be a struggle as it is swollen.
No sound is heard from beyond.

Odo steps up and pulls the door open, walking behind the door as it opens to use it as a shield in case anything nasty is in the other room.

Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
This huge hall, 40'x 90', has an arched ceiling some 30 feet overhead. The many buttresses and arches form a tracery of shadowy dimness; the ceiling's exact height is not discernible. The floor and walls are covered in slabs of polished stone, apparently azurite-malachite from the swirls of blue intermingled with the deep green. Some magic has evidently been placed here, for a soft cloudy greenish luminosity seeps from the walls and floor, seemingly floating in the air, making the whole chamber appear as if deep underwater. This impression is enhanced by the bronze doors, fountain, and other work; all are covered with verdigris. Even the damp air seems to smell of the sea. Several weird things in this place come to your immediate attention.
In the middle of the west wall is a great sheet of bronze, a bas relief of an underwater vista — seaweed, shells, and various forms of marine life. The head of a fish-like thing projects from this, a most hideous visage. (A) Its ghastly maw emits a stream of water, which falls into a tiered series of four basins. The fourth and largest never overflows, so it must have a drain system somewhere.
Near the mid-portion of the hall, some 40 feet distant from the east wall and 30 feet from the north wall, is a bronze altar with many marine creatures sculpted in bas relief upon its sides. It is about four feet high and round, with a ten-foot diameter. Its top is concave, and a shal- low basin apparently about two feet deep is filled with water. The bottom of the basin is filled with coins, a sprinkling of gems, and many small seashells.
In the mouth of a 20' wide alcove south of the altar basin (B) stands an idol or statue of serpentine stone, expertly sculpted to depict a writhing, amor- phous agglomeration of fish, eels, octopi, and other marine monsters. This horrid thing is about eight feet high and nearly as broad, the whole forming a globular mass standing about four feet from the altar basin. The alcove to its rear is ten feet deep, the back wall of which is covered by a drapery apparently fashioned from seaweed and water!
Each corner of the hall is filled by a triangular plinth, filling it and extending about 20 feet upwards. (G) Atop each of these columns is a gargoyle-like statue made of bronze and coated with verdigris.

Re: Part 10 - The Temple Again
"Coins and gems sitting right out in the open in a room with gargoyle statues, a weird mist, and other bits of oddness," observes Odo. "Nothing ominous about that at all," he deadpans.
