Thurwin - Wizard

Thurwin takes in the odd scenery and with a suspicious squint says "I agree, nothing good is in this chamber. But before we examine it further, I suggest we check the doors and the drapery to ensure we are alone, lest we fall into some trap."

OOC: I think we should check the doors and drape and make sure no one or nothing is watching or waiting for us. This rooms screams of "you are all going to die if you touch something" so I'd prefer we scout before we start examining things, lest we alert others.

"Examine?" answers Odo, as if Thurwin had just suggested Odo eat a toad. "I was certain that the appropriate response to a room full of ill portent was to close the door and go elsewhere."

"I agree with both of you, we should check the doors and drapery and then move on - I too do not get a good feeling from this room," Effric says.

Thurwin and Effirc ignore Odo's jape and explore the room, albeit hesitantly. Both the doors to the east and to the north are large, double bronze doors. They seem in regular use and well greased, so shouldn't be difficult to open. They open away from this room, it appears.

The seaweed wall to the south is merely a cleverly embroidered but normal drapery. It conceals another alcove 10' deep and 20' wide, with verdigris-covered bronze doors to the south and normal doors to the east and west.

Thurwin INT check [1d20] = 10 Thurwin notices that something isn't quite right with the gargoyles. The things do not move.

" `This room is clearly a trap. Let's go in!' " mocks Odo. " `Oh, yes! And let's also eat these mushrooms that are clearly poisonous!' " He rolls his eyes and waits to see what trouble the others get themselves—and him, of course—into.

Thurwin - Wizard

Thurwin motions for Effric to depart with him and he says quietly "Something is amiss with the gargoyles. Let's get back to the others."

He'll relay the info to the group and with a smirk toward Odo he says "Master Odo, you have keen instincts. Keep an eye on those gargoyles, there is something about them." And to the others he says "we probably want to give this room a wide berth. But it's worth knowing what's in here just the same."

I say we check out that gigantic purple slug in #202, or the spilled split pea soup in room 232.

Or how about we explore that area leading away from 202, where the passage to the south turns to the unexplored area East. We haven't been that way yet. We probably need to be on our toes, I'm not positive, but I think Mr Big Troll is over that way somewhere.

That's my suggestion.

The die is cast.

The party heads back to the circular room, near the sloping hall they came down to get to this level. You pass the great bronze gate, the surface of which is covered with bas relief faces of evil leering creatures, and turn to the right.

This 40' diameter area has an arched ceiling some 30 feet high. Its polished stones indicate that it was once meant for some special purpose, lost now under a litter of refuse, bones, and dung. A huge metal ring has been cemented into the center of the floor, and a heavy iron chain of about eight feet length is fastened to the ring. Attached to that chain is the corpse of a hydra, its heads all removed and the necks burned. The heads, like tailless serpents, lie scattered around the corridor.

A lone orc lies dead, his flail having been converted to a torch. He appears to have been heavily wounded in fighting and bled out. You can't be sure, all orcs look the same to you, but he could be one of the two orcs you freed from the turnkey. His corpse is entangled with a troll, whose rubbery skin looked almost melted. It is missing a hand, which lies to the side still gripping the military fork the monster held.

You hear something moving in the hallway to the south.

Thurwin - Wizard

Thurwin says quietly "If we don't peek, we won't know what it is, but it could be that nasty troll. We need a plan!" He looks about and says "If it's the troll, I'll use my wand on him. But just in case, get some fire ready, eh?"

OOC: That's my best plan. If it is the troll, I can try to paralyze it, if it isn't, then we can wing it. (I've got sleep and some other magics, so we aren't totally out on a limb..)
