Another thing of value would be a sword for me- or maybe some sort of complete armor for Monocar. He grins.
"Oh. Yes - your sword was destroyed by acid, as I recall. That is a matter of some urgency," says Chauncey, thinking it might be good to have the fighting types protecting Avalaa and himself armed properly before confronting danger... "If you will but describe the type of sword you wish, Luther, I will draw it for you now, without further delay... it can only produce the mundane type, I'm afraid." He then turns to Lightfinger. "Lightfinger, I'm afraid the fish was the only living thing this device will ever produce - I've since learned this through study. No barmaids, unfortunately. Let us discuss the wine barrel upon our return. We may find more immediate and desperate use for it in our travels."

Lightfinger
I thought you were sweet on the nice lady that works at the Hi-Lo?
Puh-leeze!! The Hobbit responds, Monocle, my vast young friend, you wound me. What do you see when you look at me, hm? You see a Thief, yes? My function in this committee of colonizers is to collect. Some may say steal, but I prefer the term collect. Since there is very little in the way of portable riches to be found thus far on this island, I deal in information. Information that could lead to riches, or possibly keep us alive. To this end, I will admit to stealing. Stealing hearts! He swaggers and smirks with pride. Yet another talent of mine. That revolting sack of cellulite is the key to good deal of information Mr. Nooroo is privy to, information customers unintentionally bring in, information we need. I will continue to charm Lady Nalissa, reptile that she is, to squeeze any tidbit of knowledge I am able that I believe will be of assistance to us.

In short, I'm not "sweet" on Nalissa, she's sweet on me!

Let us discuss the wine barrel upon our return.
Oh, The rake chuckles, That, my friend, was wishful thinking.

The group assembles to discuss how to handle the most recent discovery of the ship at the river. While they wait for everyone to show, each member expresses their opinions about the best way for Chauncey to use his magic crayon.

The town begins to rise to the new day and the water gatherers assemble around the community barrels. Marge is there, and she seems to be watching your group as you assemble. Eventually, the proud woman walks over to your party and speaks.

"So, any word on that ship this morning? Did anyone figure out who it is and what they are doing at the river? We want to go gather up some water, but we wont be going if they are still anchored out there. If it really is that nasty Captain Bing, as everyone here suspects, then I don't want to get too close until someone figures out what those creeps are doing. If your group is heading that way, would you mind if we tagged along behind? I don't want our stores here to get too low, so it is important to get this situation sorted as soon as we can."

Avaala the Grey

Avaala nods to Marge and her crew. "First,
ma'am, I want to introduce myself and thank you and your crew. My name is Avaala, and this is Rollo, and both of us would probably died of thirst if it wasn't for all of you. I haven't carried my part of this load yet, but I will."

"Second," he continues. "I cannot imagine any coincidence that would include that ship coming to the mouth of the river that doesn't include being part of the problem we are looking into. So, yes, we are going that way, and of course you can tag along."
"There is no spoon."

Luther

It's a real possibility that they've moved on. But, I see your point, and I don't blame you. Maybe you should wait, and we'll look into things today. I'm sure we can sort something out before tomorrow's water run.

Luther looks around, taking a quick headcount of the adventurers. Are we missing anyone?

He hunkers down and draws a short sword for Chauncey to use as a guide.

Avaala the Grey

Avaala looks a bit concerned. "If I understand the situation correctly, Luther, there has been no water run today. And Marge would no better than I, but I don't think there is much margin for missing a day." The mage looks to Marge for correction or affirmation.

Marge returns the formal greetings of the friendly wizard and his big dog.

"Yes, yes, hello yourself Avaala. I have noticed that you have both been rather thirsty, but weren't necessarily contributing to the workload. I will gladly accept your offer to tag along with your group, and am glad to hear that you intend to do what you can to help the good people of Beachtown."

Then looking at Luther with squinty eyes.

"Well, if they have moved on, then we shouldn't have anything to worry about, should we?"

Then again back to Avaala.

"We could manage one more day without a water run, but I would rather just go along with you today and see if we can get this job done. Idle hands are a devils workshop, as you know."

Alordan rejoins the group. "Makes sense to go scope out this captain and see what he is up to. We should be prepared for the worst as I'm sure he is. Do we have any idea of how many men he has with him?"

"I also did some exploring of my own to check out that little island just off the coast. Seems like a nice spot to make a home being so close to shore, but it is definitely inhabited. Not only a bunch of feral cats but something loud and mean higher up than you'd expect. I'd say it was a wild boar, but not if it was coming from the trees... anyway, something to add to our growing list of tasks.."

Brother Gilbert offers to help with getting more water.

Living things may do without food for a time, but not water. I suggest we, or some of us, get more water. Perhaps something can be done to make the task easier; I will share any ideas that may burble up in my mind.(pun intended)

Luther

Absolutely, Marge- come along if ya want. I won't stop ya. I just didn't want to put anyone else in danger, that's all.

When everyone is ready, Luther leads the way, sticking closer to the treeline, where the ground should be more solid and easier to walk on.

Seeking Out The Village People
Godsday, 2nd of Goodmonth
Nearing Mid Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy

The group understands the idea of safety in numbers so it collectively decides to escort the water gatherers to the river, since both parties are headed to the same place anyway. Brother Gilbert knows the value of clean water and offers to help out with the laborious chore. Marge smiles at the priest as she grabs one more of the uncomfortable yokes for him to carry. The pair of large wooden pails tied to the ends of the yoke are not that heavy to carry when empty, but the trip back will most assuredly be a different story.

"I do have a few more yokes if any of you big strong men would also like to lend a hand!"

Marge lines up her humble group of 9 helpers and the long train of 8 adventurers (plus one dog) followed by the 10 water gatherers heads out from the outskirts of Beachtown. Luther leads the way and the commoners agree to stay behind the party at a safe distance as they explore, none of them being too interested in confrontation.

The trip starts off pleasantly enough, despite the heat, humidity, and the blasted bugs that fly around your heads mercilessly. After about 2 hours of walking up the hard packed beach trail, the leaders spot something off in the distance. The Green Flash is still there, anchored right where it was, just off the shore near the mouth of the river. You cant tell from this distance if there are still sailors working on deck, but the ship doesn't seem to have sailed away yet.

Marge hustles up to the front group as they stop to check out this new discovery. "Any idea how we should handle this? If there are none aboard, maybe we could still sneak up there and fill our buckets?"

Actions?

The ship is still far off in the distance. It is about another 2 hour walk to get to the river.

Lightfinger complains.

This yoke weighs more than I do, He whines, Where's that blasted Hairfoot? He's much more suited for this sort of work.
Any idea how we should handle this? If there are none aboard, maybe we could still sneak up there and fill our buckets?
This Captain Bling is an utterly cruel and ruthless Man, I sincerely doubt he'd leave his source of commerce and power unguarded. I suggest the Rangers and myself conduct some reconnaissance before any solid plans be made. He glances back at Avaala. Perhaps your canine friend would also accompany us? I mean, just in case? He can move much more quickly than we can, and his keen senses may well detect an enemy before they can act against us. And to be clear, my friends, these Men are enemies.

Saracen nods at the wise little man’s words, yawning sleepily already, early as it is in their trek.

” A good plan little treasure finder. We shall await the all clear in the shade of these trees and watch for signs from the ship. Anyone know much about sailing vessels? How much would one of those be worth, and how many sailors would it take to man such a craft adequately?”

The orange robed half-orc steps into the canopy of the tree line and after a quick inspection into the jungle to see if any predator lurks within, stares out to sea to watch the boat. He will look for smaller crafts attached to the larger boat, to see if any are still available for the crew to row to shore? A look out in the mast. That sort of thing.
Greys Campaign.

Alordan hmmms at the notion that these are indeed enemies from the get go and maybe not someone to be reasoned with. "If that's the case, I was thinking we could play it cool like we are a water party to collect water for the town - business as usual - which is true, by the way. But if enemies they are indeed, perhaps we do prepare a counter attack option should a score of men try to 'reason' with us. Something like fire for the sails and rigging? Do you think they already see us if we can see the ship? Would have been nice to have that net trap set up that we used on the damn troll here but that's water that's gone out with the tide..."

Lightfinger stares wordlessly.

Alordan's words taking the wind from his sails, the Halfling must agree. You're right,
of course, if we've seen them, they've seen us. The plan I put forth is relatively useless.

As they pause to discuss options and Marge requests strong shouldered men, Chauncey promptly tunes her out, sits down, pulls out a piece of paper from his pack and begins sketching with the Amazing Crayon. When he's finished, he presents his creation to Luther. "I hope you don't mind - I thought it would be appropriate to embellish the pommel with a little bear's head because... well, you know."

Brother Gilbert arranges the yoke on his shoulders to be as comfortable as possible, and offers to stay with the water bearers. He has a mace and small shield, but they are for defensive use, and he only uses them as a last resort.

Avaala the Grey

Avaala nods at Alordan's words. "Yes," he says. "Alordan has it right, I think, on several accounts. The water bearers have often traveled with escorts before, so that won't raise any eyebrows. They are known to not travel with valuables, so we would not be accosted for robbery. And if we are left alone to get water from the river, that will let us get as close to the ship as we can without boats. A good vantage point, perhaps, to see what goes on there."

Knowing his own limits, Avaala looks for a long yoke with buckets that won't overtax his amazingly average back. He finds his balance point and lifts. "And you," he says to Rollo, "should be happy you are too short for this work. So you're on guard duty."
"There is no spoon."

Luther

Luther smiles when he sees the sword Chauncey has created for him. That is better than I could have hoped for- thank you. He tests the edge with his thumb, and swings it experimentally, getting the balance of the thing.

Luther would have accepted a yoke and buckets, also.

Yes, we should attempt 'business as usual'. Possibly playing that we don't recognize the ship- maybe offering them assistance?
