Quest #7 "Making Friends With The Monkoons"

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

Moonday, 22nd of Reaping
Early Morning, Hot and Sunny

Devrin rises early to do his studying and then goes through some swordplay exercises. He looks for his new friends Saracen and Alordan, hoping to get an early start on his idea to attempt to speak with the monkoons again. He finds the elf boy Jack instead who also seems willing to tag along.

Devrin

A moment later, Devrin continues, "I'm sorry.
You asked me questions, and I didn't answer. Some friends and I are going to see if we can learn how to talk to the Monkoons. And I'm afraid I haven't seen a serviceable pancake anywhere on this island."

The sudden presence of an Elvish child puzzles Devrin intensely, but he tries not to treat him any differently than he would any other.

"My name is Devrin. I am from the Duchy of Ulek. Who are you, may I ask."
"There is no spoon."

Saracen rises and performs his ablutions. He prays to the Lord of light to renew his powers and then breaks his fast. Leaving his two handed sword and other items left previously in the shack once more the orange robed half-orc puts on some of the druids insect repellant balm and goes off to fill up his waterskin.

Seeing the elfs out early the half-orc approaches. "Good morning. Feeling better after a nights rest are we? Jack!" he nods, acknowledging the young elfboy

is Saracen 11/12 or 12/12 hp wise now?

Luther was safe now, so Jack didn't feel bad about going off a little to find trouble adventure. Besides, Luther wanted to build tree-roads with the big dumb guy today. That sounded like hard, boring, drudging labor. What fun was that?

Devrin

"So, Jack," says Devrin. "I see you already know Saracen. Does talking to Monkoons sound like something you'd enjoy?"

Remembering how the Monkoons acted around the Human children, he feels that not only is Jack safe, but might even help to attract the Monkoons.

After waking up sufficiently refreshed, Chauncey pokes around a bit to uncover rumors around town about current "missions." He decides right away he has no interest in chopping trees, the idea being ridiculous on its face, nor in being paralyzed by aquatic undead, who, in his experience, are quite resistant to being Sleeped, if not entirely immune. He's not at all sure about Monkoons, either, but is at least curious about their tree dwellings, if indeed that bit is not mere fanciful embellishment. He notices the small group getting ready to depart and approaches.

"Is this an orc and elf only alliance?!! he all but shouts in an awkward attempt at jocularity, "Or may a somewhat overqualified magic user join your diplomatic expedition?... Saracen, Jack... ah... Aldor...man, I believe we've met... but you sir, elf person, I do not believe I have yet had the pleasure... " he says as he turns to Devrin.

Saracen sees the wizard approach and smiles. "Hello Chauncey, good to see you again. Another magician would be highly useful in understanding the clever little creatures living up above, don't you think Devrin, he may have a similar spell you to understand what the monkoons are saying, especially if you stagger your magic. Jack, we are off to broker some sort of peace perhaps with the monkoons around the camp. They have a soft spot for children apparently. What do you think?" the half-orc says slowly.

Devrin

Saracen introduces Chauncey as a magician and even through his usual elvish reserve, it is not difficult to see Devrin's eyes widen a bit. "Indeed helpful! The spell I speak of is fairly common and I think doubling our listening abilities would be nothing but helpful."

Devrin closes to Chauncey and speaks a bit quieter. "And perhaps we will have a bit of luck in the spells we do NOT share as well. Perhaps a bit of mutually beneficial trading soon?"

Alordan someone refreshed after a long day before, fills his skin and meets the group. "Well met Jack and a fine morning to make yet more new friends with our Monkoon neighbors! Devrin, in your experience how best to approach these creatures? Will a group make them nervous? Do some hang back while others take the lead?"

Devrin

"Jack," says Devrin. "A Monkoon is a living, intelligent creature. I'm afraid they aren't something you can just have. But, you might find they make good friends!"

As soon as he finishes speaking, he realizes that Jack isn't from the Island. No one could live here for very long and not know what a Monkoon is. "Jack, where are you from? Where are your parents?"

Devrin

"Well," he tells Alordan. "What happened in my case was I was following the Monkoons, trying to see where they lived and what kind of range they had, when I noticed that, behind the village, they would drop down and play with the children." Devrin pauses a moment.

"Even giving food to them. I hung back a bit and made a point of befriending the children the next day. The Monkoons didn't come down while I was with them, but they didn't seen to mind that I was there. They would chatter at me in a nice way, and i would try to talk to them. I didn't try any magic then because I didn't want to leave myself open to attack from the other things that live in the jungle's edge. Finally, I made my mistake. I got impatient and tried to go to them. Hit a snare on one of their platforms about thirty feet up. That's where we met."

Devrin takes a breath and continues. "I think we might want to start with the kids again. I don't know if the Monkoons will object to a group, but I know we need to present as peaceful an appearance as possible. They didn't seem to mind my staff or my sword, but I never waved the staff, and I never pulled out my sword."
"There is no spoon."

Jack instantly beams with joy.

Lightfinger bandys up to the others present, giving each that knowing nod.

Wonderful! It promises to be a great day. I'm sorry, have we met?
My name is Devrin. I am from the Duchy of Ulek.
Well met, good Sir! I am completely fascinated with your experience with the Monkoons, and I hope to be of some assistance in creating an understanding of these creatures, as opposed to an all-out slaughter.

The morning air begins to heat up nicely while the adventurers discuss their plans to infiltrate one of the many monkoon platforms that surround the town. One by one the group grows larger.

Devrin

Devrin kneels and begins to draw in the sand. "Here is where I first saw the kids playing near the Monkoons. And since there are actually a very few places where they can play safely, I imagine we could start there.

Devrin looks around at the assembled team. "And I also think if we all go walking in together, we'll scare off the Monkoons and the kids. Now I want opinions, but I think if, say, Jack and I go in, and talk to the kids and then each of you slowly comes in, we might be able to see how the Monkoons react. We can also learn if there is a point where they just leave."

Jack, lost boy:

The grownups we're talking again so Jack made his face look like he was paying close attention to them. But his head swam with thoughts of his new pet Monkoon. I bet they're monkey-raccoons! My two favorite animals of all time! Except snakes. And cats. And mice. And horses. And -

Suddenly Jack noticed the grown ups had stopped talking and were looking at him. Maybe they had just asked him a question?

So Jack nodded earnestly and smiled, "Yes!"

Then the nice, ugly man healed him! "Wow! Thanks, mister monster!"

Thanks, Storm! :D
