Jack, lost boy:
SirOwen wrote:Devrin"No," says Devrin. "We aren't leaving. If we are to come to any understanding with them, they need to get used to us. We can't take a message to the people who are cutting down their homes, if we don't know what the message is."
"The message is, "Stop cutting down our homes!" And we don't want them to get used to grownups, it'll make it easier for people to trap them!" Jack says over his shoulder. "Now please, leave us for a little while. We've got this. They don't trust you!"

From his pouch, Jack pulls out a golden coin minted by a kingdom that fell a millennia ago. He holds it out for the Monkoons to see, wanting to hear what they say to each other about treasure! Maybe they've seen gold before on this island.

Devrin

"No, Jack. It's not going to happen like that. I've been here, right on this spot, getting acquainted with the Monkoons, and letting them get acquainted with me, since before the idea occurred to anyone else."

Devrin kneels down and calls to the children. "Zelmin, Sally, would you please come over here? Devrin tells the children that he's sorry he didn't notice how hungry they were, and that he'll take them both out for a proper meal when they get back into town. But right now, he wants them to take his hands and walk him into the clearing. He knows that they already know that he's trying to get close to the Monkoons again.

Saracen will watch what occurs with the elves and the human children. Thinking perhaps some kind of game might be in order he rummages around in his pack until he finds a candle. He won't do anything yet until the elf lad's spell has run its course.

The Best Laid Plans...
Monkoon Clearing, Early Morning
Hot, Humid, Buggy

Jack puffs out his chest and happily tells the stupid grown-ups to leave the clearing. He thinks that the monkoons will be friendlier and talk more if only the children remain. The elf boy grabs up some of Lightfinger’s picked apart rations, handing some fresh fruit and dark bread to the hungry children.

Saracen, Alordan, and Chauncey stick to the edge of the trees, trying to look as harmless as possible. The mage seems a bit distracted as he accidentally turns his head into a tree branch that pokes at his eye. The grisly priest of Pholtus calmly expresses his desire to stand by quietly to continue observing the mannerisms of these seemingly docile animals. He draws forth a single candle from his pack as he watches on intently.

Noticing that the adults aren’t leaving, Jack pipes up again. This time he holds out an ancient shiny gold coin to his furry friends to see if they like treasure. They seem far too infatuated with the sausage to even notice the coin. Devrin argues Jacks point, clearly expressing that he has no desire to leave after setting up this eventual meeting over the last few days. He calls over his young friends with a promise of a good meal later if they lead him in closer to the creatures. They happily comply and begin to lead him to where Jack and Lightfinger are standing near the center of the clearing.

The monkoon in the tree continues his jumping and ranting at the others, none of which Jack understands. The 2 on the ground continue to look around at all of the people involved with these negotiations with untrusting expressions. The animal that Jack touched unselfishly hands Zelmin a piece of his sausage as the other monkoon tosses half of his piece to the lone creature in the tree. They all nibble away at the delicious meat, though they never seem let their guard down while others are this close to them. After a few more moments of unintelligible communication between them, Jack understands even more words from the one he touched.

"I think they are trying to talk with us! Maybe these creatures are smarter than we first thought? Stop jumping around like a fool and just listen for a while. I don’t think they would go through all of this trouble just to catch and kill 3 more of us. They haven’t tried to round us up to kill since that evil man left. Maybe these little ones are less aggressive than the tall ones?"

"Ow!" says Chauncey, as the stupid, stupid branch pokes him unexpectedly in the eye, then continues in a calm, even tone, "Remember, you have an adept and cunning wizard in your midst. Ahem! ...at the least sign of aggression, these creatures, with the merest snap of my fingers, will fall into a harmless slumber. No one gets hurt." He awaits any further elucidation from Jack on the communications of the frankly ridiculous looking creatures.

Lightfinger sits up and takes notice. Annoyingly.

Jack! What are they saying, Jack? Are they still talking to you? What's happening,
Jack? Jack, are you listening to me?

Devrin

Devrin sits on the ground among the children, his staff left against the tree at the clearing's edge and his sword in his scabbard. He looks up at the agitated Monkoon and looks directly at him until he catches the creature's eye. He immediately breaks eye contact, but continues to look in the general direction. He smiles at the leader (as Devrin perceives him to be), but shows no teeth in the smile. He taps himself on the chest and says, "Devrin" several times. He then waits to see if the leader does anything new.

The burly half-orc will watch and wait to see if the monkoons come to any sort of agreement. In the mean time he will get out some of his iron rations and offer them to the children, remaining at the edge of the clearing and calling them to him, holding out bits of the dried jerky and hard tack

Jack, lost boy:

Jack rolls his eyes and mutters to himself with studied disdain, "Grownups! You can't teach them anything!"
He uses a larger piece of food to try to get his new pet monkoon to come closer.

The Stalemate At The Monkoon Clearing
Early Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy

After rubbing his eye a little, Chauncey reminds the entire group that he has some magic prepared that will prevent anyone from needing to be hurt. Saracen and Alordan also stand by cautiously, hoping to hear more translations from Jack as to what these strange animals are saying. The warrior priest tries to lure the children back to him with another offer of dried food.

Lightfinger, Jack, and now Devrin remain in the middle of the clearing, keeping their actions as innocuous as possible so as not to frighten off their new friends. Devrin and Jack carry on with their conversation as the boy’s translation magic continues to wane. Devrin tries to get the elevated monkoon to understand his name by saying it over and over while pointing at himself. His words seem to fall on deaf ears though, as the creature pays little attention to the elf’s attempts at common communication.

The monkoons on the ground remain just out of arms reach despite the elf boys attempts at drawing them in closer to him. They continue to devour their sausage, but make no aggressive movements towards the party as they eat. After a bit more chewing and a little less squawking from the tree, Jack’s furry friend offers up a few more words that only he can understand. To the others, it all still sounds like completely incoherent chattering.

“I have no idea what they are trying to say, but it doesn’t seem to be bad. If they wanted to kill us, they would have tried something by now. None of these people look like the ones who came here before. If they aren’t here to kill us, maybe these newcomers might be willing to help us with the witch? Should we go try to find Rococo? We could tell him about these peaceful tall ones to see what he thinks we should do.”

Jack, lost boy:

Jack's faerie trick is waning and even he is beginning to understand the monkoons don't want to be pets. It must be the grownups' fault! Why won't they ever listen?

About to leave, with plans to come back tomorrow to try again on his own, Jack hears a monkoon mention a witch. The eternal child jumps up and down animatedly and gently points at the one that spoke. "Yes!" Jack nods vigorously. "Yes! We can help you with your witch problem! Take us to Rococo! We'll follow you!" He tentatively takes one baby step forward, still nodding and smiling.

Devrin

Devrin's head jerks toward Jack as Jack responds to the Monkoons. Devrin doesn't say a word, and holds up a hand to everyone but Jack. This is what he's waited days for, and he doesn't want to miss any of it.

In the interest of keeping things......interesting, I want to push this dialog along as much as I can. Since forming a sentence doesn't take a full 60 seconds, I will allow 2 posts of simple conversation per round until Jacks spell runs its course. Please jump in anytime if there is something you want to do other than wait and listen. Thanks!
The Stalemate At The Monkoon Clearing
Early Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy

Listening to a bit more of what this creature has to say, Jack gets a little overly excited. Unfortunately, his jumping and pointing only causes the monkoon he can understand to back up a little more.

His translating starts to take a turn south when he shouts out something about a witch and someone named Rococo. This of course catches the interest of Devrin, but only confuses poor Lightfinger further.

The monkoon Jack is yelling to gets wide eyes, but it is pretty clear that he has no idea what the boy is saying. He looks back at the one in the tree but gets nothing in the way of advice. Although, that one seems to have finally stopped its screeching and is now listening intently to what is happening on the ground.

The one Jack touched looks at him and speaks again, this time much more inquisitively.

“Can you understand what I am saying?
How?
Do you have a power ball too?
Where did you get it?
Can I see it?
What color is yours?”

Saracen, enthused but the show of the monkoons behavioural changes for the better, prays silently to the blinding light that things work out well with Jack, and some kind of message that we can understand the creatures for a short while via magic is made. If the elf boy can point at Devrin and Chauncey as well and communicate that touch is required to make it work then the half-orc will give two prayers this evening as the sun sets. :D

Devrin

In a calm voice, Devrin speaks to Jack. "Jack, if your spell works like mine, it is going to wear off in another minute or so. If you can cast it again, before it wears off, I don't think you'd need to touch him again. But if you do let the spell wear off, you'll have to try to get him close enough to touch again."

Jack likes playing charades!
OGRE MAGE wrote:“Can you understand what I am saying?
Jack frantically smiles, nods and points to his own ears. "Yes! Yes I can, little monkoon!"

Jack touches his two pointer fingers together repeatedly while looking into the monkoon's eyes. "Touch!... Touch!" Then he gently reaches in the direction of the monkoon.

Jack moves his hands around an invisible crystal ball, like he is conjuring visions from it. Once the monkoon recognizes what he's aping, Jack stops and turns his empty palms up. "No. I don't. But... the witch has a crystal ball?!"
Jack suddenly shudders and looks over both shoulders, like a wicked witch might be watching him right now. "Creepy!"

The speaking monkoon continues with his attempt at conversation. He looks to his friend up in the tree again.

"See! I told you! They are only trying to talk to us! They aren't going to hurt us!"

The creature mimics all of Jack's moves, pointing to his ears and touching his fingers together. He still doesn't let the boy touch him, but he seems to be letting his guard down a little more.

The crystal ball hand movements seem to confuse the creature however. It shakes its head at this action and then follows the boys eyes as he looks around. The non speaking creatures continue to watch the proceedings in silence.

"Can you tell what he is saying? What is he looking for up there? We need Rococo here so we can understand what they want. What did he say these things were called? Oomans? How do you say wait here in ooman?"

The rest of the party hears only more strange chattering noises from the monkoon.
