”Hello again, madame!” says Chauncey abruptly to Nalissa as he strides in to the Hi-Lo. ”If you please, I need the following with all reasonable haste: one brasier made of brass, about so big, 100 g.p. worth of incense and the following herbs: basil, savory, and catnip.” He stands back with hands on hips, a politely expectant look on his face, then adds: ”I should add that I do not yet possess 100 gold pieces, but I’m sure that will be rectified any day now. By means of treasure and such, recovered honestly and in a professional manner from hidden mines, buried temples and what-have-you...”

Nalissa smiles back blankly and blinks her big eyelashes several times before realizing that the wizard isn't joking with her.

"We have some..................fairly fresh mistletoe. Would that work instead?"

"I can put in a request with the captain for the other things you mentioned. But they won't arrive for a while.

“Hmmm. I see. This is not very convenient for me.” says Chauncey, pondering. ”Still, there is nothing for it, I suppose. Tell me, does anyone on the island grow the requisite herbs, that I may buy them directly? Is there any source of incense other that by ordering? Any idea how long it would take or the approximate total cost? I need these things for a spell.”

The nice lady tolerates the wizards unintentional arrogance with a smile.

"If our stock is too inconvenient, you are welcome to try shopping somewhere else." She says this with a wry grin, only half joking.

"Your order would be around 500 pieces of gold, depending on availability of that exact size brazier. I am pretty sure I could have it all shipped here in about 2 weeks time, if they have everything in Saltmarsh proper, that is."

"I don't know of any budding herbalists setting up shop around here yet, but there are several folks here who are trying to grow all manner of things. Have you thought about asking the other spell casting types such as yourself if they have anything you seek? Perhaps you could barter for the things you need to get them faster?"

”I... oh,” says Chauncey, looking slightly deflated. ”Perhaps I will do as you say and ask around a bit. 500 is a bit steep for me at the moment, even with my inevitable treasure income. If there were only some quicker means of...” his eyes suddenly go wide and he ceases talking abruptly. After a beat he turns to Narissa and says ”I bid you good day, Madame” and hurriedly exits the shop.

He heads for his shack to do some thinking, but on the way stops by the the fire.

Lightfinger

The Tallfellow enters the Hi-Lo, shaking his head, eyes squinting painfully, yet a flabbergasted smile graces his fine features. Spotting Nalissa, he engages in pleasantries. What's the last thing one might expect to see on this island? Hmm? The question is obviously rhetorical, and he continues almost immediately, pointing toward the door. There is a Human Man, a Man I know quite well, a very large Man, a seven-foot, 400 pound mountain of a Man ... Rooting thru Randall's considerable trash heap! He bends forward in an uncontrollable Hobbit guffaw, then continues. I almost ... almost ... Asked what he intended to find, but thought better of it. If he gets started talking, you can't get away from him. He'll grab you by both ears. He'll follow you into the privy! Another round of giggles ensues, and he holds one hand up in a signal to wait a moment.

Okay, okay, Arte regains his composure, Enough about Monocar. He's a fine fellow, really, if a bit dim. I came to see you, dear Lady. He suddenly realizes Nalissa is quite attractive in comparison to the last female he had dealings with. I have had no luck ... And I mean zero ... In finding old Harold. The Man is an enigma! I'm beginning to suspect he has his own secret hold outside this village, likely far more secure. And do you know what else I've noted? The Dwarves, they seem to also have disappeared. I mean, I know where some of them are, tho I don't particularly want to run across them again, no, I have reference to the newly arrived Dwarves. I can't help but wonder if they haven't joined the others of their kind ... And that would worry me, for... His voice trails off, and he changes the subject. Some of those I arrived with have not been seen for some time as well, a pair of absolutely stunning Elf Maidens among them. His eyes widen and snap up to Nalissa's. I mean, "Stunning" if one is into the scrawny, pointy-featured, aloof types. He decides to quickly change the subject once again.

We lost Jack, His demeanor saddens in an attempt to elicit sympathy, The Boy, the Lost Elf Boy. We honestly don't know where he is. There was a battle, you see, with the horrible sea Troll which has been terrifying the water-bearers. We were fortunate enough to slay the beast ... After the second attempt ... But Jack ... Jack has been missing ever since. The Halfling grabs Nalissa's hand with both of his, his best desperation in his voice. Have any of them been seen? I'd hate to bury any more of my friends here on this barren isle!

Well, the Dwarves aren't really my friends, but, a mild curiosity.

Seriously great post!

Nalissa smiles at the handsome halfling as soon as he enters the door. After hearing about Monocars latest endeavors, she just shakes her head and laughs out loud.

"Hello again little Atre. Glad to see you still hear with us. And I am pretty sure I know who this Monocar person is that you are talking about. That big guy is a mysterious one for sure. I have no idea why someone would dig through garbage, especially Randall's pile of stinking crap."

"I am sorry though, as I still haven't seen Harold around town, but if I do, I will surely tell him you are looking for him. I don't know of any private secret hideouts nearby, but I don't get out into the jungle much myself."

"Now the fat little dwarves I have seen around here, hundreds of them, actually. The last ship that the captain brought in was nearly full of them. But they didn't stick around town very long like the first bunch did. I don't know where they all went, but folks said that the whole lot of them marched right up the loggers trail in full battle gear as son as they disembarked the ship. I have no idea what that was all about though."

The fluffy, dark skinned woman seems slightly offended at the question about the stunning elf women, but smiles again at the quick thinking halfling's rebuttal. "I sure hope that you aren't one of those who likes the scrawny types, little cutie." She says this with an awkward wink of her long lashes.

"I am very sorry that you lost a friend, but if you killed the sea troll and only lost one of your group, then I would say that you did pretty well. Many who come here don't last long, especially when fighting the bigger monsters here."

She actually swoons when the pretty halfling reaches over the tall counter to hold her hand. "Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the others you spoke of either. Though, a lot of people that go into the jungle here are never seen from again. In fact, we lost one of the founding members of the town, a scary looking priest he was. I didn't think he would have any trouble out there by himself, but he has never returned either. Not that anyone would really miss him. He was a dark and unfriendly man in my opinion."

"So, you say that you know where these dwarfs went? I'm sure Mister Nehru would be interested in hearing about that one. He gets quite concerned when that many people come ashore, only to disappear without a trace. Especially since they were all heavily armed."

Lightfinger is back in schmooze mode.
I sure hope that you aren't one of those who likes the scrawny types, little cutie.
Oh, ho-ho-ho, no! He chuckles, No cold and bony females for me, no, I prefer soft and warm! One does not lay on a bed of sticks, His big brown eyes inch closer to Nalissa's, When one can lay on a pillow...
Now the fat little dwarves I have seen around here, hundreds of them, actually. The last ship that the captain brought in was nearly full of them. But they didn't stick around town very long like the first bunch did. I don't know where they all went, but folks said that the whole lot of them marched right up the loggers trail in full battle gear as son as they disembarked the ship. I have no idea what that was all about though.

So, you say that you know where these dwarfs went? I'm sure Mister Nehru would be interested in hearing about that one.
Wait, what? The Halfling snaps to of a sudden. Oh, no ... No, this is bad, this is very bad, this is SO not good! He nearly jumps back in a mild frenzy of indecision, his head turning this way and that, pacing in circles and throwing up his arms. This is awful! I need to ... They need to ... If they ... What will I ... Oh, I have to go! I must warn them! My friends, I mean, they need to know this! I have to tell them this! About the Dwarves, I mean. He bolts for the door, then screeches to a halt. Tell Newroo I'll speak to him upon my return, when I know more. But it's not good. Again he darts toward the exit, and again he stops. Thank you, Nalissa, you may just have saved lives! Finally he makes out, his short legs propelling him with all the speed adrenaline can provide.

Mr. Nehru looks shocked when he receives conformation that the ship is indeed anchored 4 miles up the beach instead of right here in town.

"I have no idea what they might be doing! They didn't stop here to make a delivery at all. That has me worried."

"Captain Quark warned me about Bing! He said he had his own agenda, but I didn't believe him, so I didn't listen to him. But now it seems to be true."

The thin, tan-skinned man rubs his skeletal chin for some time before speaking again.

"Could you tell what they were up to way out there? Were there more people on board waiting to come ashore? I know the ships were bringing lumber back to town to add to their profits. Was there any big black logs on the deck of the ship?"

Mr. Nehru looks puzzled......and rather upset.

"Well thank you for bringing this to my attention, Luther! There is no telling what that less than wholesome crew is up to out there. But if they are this organized already, it is obviously something more valuable than the logs they were hauling back to Saltmarsh."

The thin man ponders an idea for a few moments, then hesitantly asks another question.

"Do you think your party would like to go out there to get a closer look at these rascals for me? Maybe first thing in the morning? I know Captain Quark would be interested to hear about this as well, once his ship returns in a few days."

"What do you say? I would extend another week of free lodging to anyone who accompanies you out there to find out what they are up to. Does that sound good to you?"

Luther

I'm sure I kin find somebody to go along. I'll round up some folks- we can leave in the morning.

Unless there's something else, Luther will leave, and make the rounds of Beachtown before he goes to bed for the night.

Saracen finds Mr. Nehru at his beautiful desk in the back office of the Hi-Lo.

The thin man looks genuinely pleased to see the holy half-orc, but he can barely look him in the eye as he takes in his information. He eventually peers up at Saracen with a look of true fear in his eye.

"This is my fault. All my fault. A lot of people warned me that I neede to do something about those thugs months ago, but I never did. I was afraid they would get violent and hurt someone. I guess I was right."

He pleads with the holy warrior, finally giving in to the notion that he is doomed without the help of the more powerful adventurers around.

"Will you help me right this travesty, good Brother of Pholtus? I can't fix what I have done all alone. I now realize that violence and aggression are the only things these bastards understand."

"Will you assemble the strongest of your friends to go against this Captain Bing and his growing band of slave smuggling pirates before it is too late? Luther and some of the others are already looking into this. Perhaps you could all combine your forces to defeat this menace once and for all? I will offer a healthy reward for each man that successfully completes this task!"

Saracen sighs deeply, desperately accepting that he will indeed have to go and
Follow the other group into the natives territory, as much as he does not want to do so. He can only hope it’s an adventure that doesn’t take too long and is over swiftly and as painlessly as possible.

I will do this, but I will need an escort to look for my companions. Heading off into this jungle alone would be suicide. If we are to attack this captain, it would be good if you could assemble a team to Head back to the green flash with some fire bombs or oil and set it firmly alight, and sink the smugglers means of escape before any that escape flee the island. I will leave at first light tomorrow.

That done the half-orc will bid the leader of
Beach town goodbye. Stepping outside and round the corner he will cast know alignment quietly out of sight and then return, scanning the leader (whose name I can’t spell- Nehru?) as he enters back into the hi-lo. Once scanned he will ask i meant to ask, have you heard from the original company that set off to search the native villages yet?

Mr. Nehru stares at the priest with a puzzled look.

"An escort? Assemble a team? Great heavens, man! You're the team!! I have no men at my disposal that could do such things. What would you have me do? Send Marge to swim out there with some explosives between her teeth?"

When the half-orc leaves and then returns again, the thin human looks even more confused. His response rings of both neutrality and goodness.

"What are you trying to........ oh never mind"

"No, they haven't returned yet. But they only just left earlier today, I wasn't actually expecting them back this soon."
