The half-orc will smile and pat the big giants head with affection. Pholtus is the light and he will show you the way good man! he says. The holy champion will then head to the beach with some large plant leaves as shade and erect a canopy. He will settle and watch the waves for signs of the creature he saw on his way back from the water collection mission earlier. Even if he sees the creature he will just watch and observe what it does for the afternoon.

Hopeful that with some careful planning the adventurers, rash and undisciplined through they are, will be able to draw this creature out of the waves. If it must be slaughtered hopefully, as sizeable as it is, it will provide a real feast for the township, and potentially the monkoons as well. This might all work out incredibly well, no doubt just how his lord had planned it.

Devrin

Watching Jack run off, Devrin can only shrug. 'He's nice enough,' Devrin thinks. 'And doesn't seem to mean any harm. If he wants to keep his secrets, he has every right. If I don't pry, he might talk later.'

Luther

The ranger smiles as his wounds close and heal. Thank you, Brother.

Luther looks around- he never wanted to be in charge of anything, but here he is...

We can't cut any more trees right now- not until we know better where the Tree People live. But we've got some open ground already- folks can clear stumps and underbrush. Maybe we can divide the cleared area up for garden plots- get some vegetables planted.
We need to learn as much as we can about this critter the Tree People want killed, so we can make a plan to deal with it. I'm going to the beach to watch for it.

Luther gathers straight branches and thin vines, and settles himself on the sand, weaving fish traps and watching the water for any sign of the 'Sea Monster'. He'll also teach folks how to make the fish traps, if they ask. I'm guessing that some of the villagers already know how...

Many good ideas continue to be tossed about when all of the sudden Monocar decides to take on a new god to follow. Saracen winces when he tries to imagine the size of the baptism font they may need. Devrin speaks to the others about some compromises they may have to impose on their newly found neighbors. He also tries to talk to Jack about some of the mysteries attached to the elf boy, though his efforts are quickly snubbed.

Luther urges any willing townsfolk with good vision to scope out these aerial villages of the tree people, which is what he will be calling them from now on, mostly because he didn’t think to ask them what they were. ;) He tells the nearby townies to mark the trees that they see action in with red ribbons, so nobody else does any damage to the bases of the creature’s high homes. He then organizes the farmers in the plots that have already been cleared.

Jack asks around the ranks of grownups about getting back to some adventuring. He badly wants to be back on the trail of those elusive zombies, but as usual, nobody listens to the sulking little boy. Saracen and Luther decide to set up a makeshift shade lean-to down by the beach. While the ranger makes more fish traps, Saracen watches up the beach to the east. He sees no sign of the sea monster this close to town, but does notice the burly women that he talked to yesterday, leading her group of water gatherers up the beach towards town. The big woman just shakes her head when she sees the lazy men lounging in their beach chairs.

Luther

Hello, ladies! We're on the lookout for that 'Sea Monster' people have seen. Can you tell us anything about it? Luther moves to help with the water containers as he asks this.

Saracen thinking that the sea creature might be reluctant to show itself this close to town, picks up his shelter and moves along the beach towards the river. About half way between the two he will replant his shelter, set his shield and flail standing up in the sand ready to pick up if needed and strings his bow and places his quiver in the sand standing up two, rest to pluck arrows from it should anything attack. He goes back to watching the sea for signs of the creature, or anything else out there of note.

Monocar

Grins feeling like a new man. He stands up and stretches out the kinks that were ever present these past few days, feeling his joints pop satisfyingly and feeling the fibers of his muscles stretch out and become limber again. He grins and follows Luthar and Saracen to go hunt the sea creature. He wonders up close to the water taking a good long scan of the shallows to see if he can spot anything that might offer a clue for old Fish Lips. Off handily to Lunthar: "You suppose there is much in the way of good fishing here? I think someone mentioned before that they had just about fished the place out. I wonder if there were something we could find to attract more in general, like sinking some of the brush for fish homes out here instead of just burning the useless brush."

The water gathering ladies are glad for the help, even if it is only for the last few feet of their trip. The burly leader type isn't afraid to show her contempt, however.
"Oh, don't get up on our account, boys. Just sit there enjoying the day while others work around you. Your homely orange friend here has seen the creature for himself, and he knows everything that I know about it. Why don't you stop bothering us hard working folk and just ask him?"

I will set up a separate thread for this mini mission so we don't have to keep posting these actions in the town thread. I didn't see any recruiting though. Should I assume that it will only be Saracen and Monocar going along? And Luther?

Devrin

Upon arriving back near the center of town, Devrin quickly asks around, trying to find out which way the big, orange-haired half-orc went. Saracen and Alordan have been friendly to him so far, and he hopes to catch up with them. Once he gets a direction, Devrin sets off at a sprint.

Now What?
Early Afternoon
Hot, Sticky, Buggy

The duo of Sotha and Chauncey make their way back outside of the Hi-Lo to see what all the fuss is about. They notice the handsome halfling Lightfinger tucked neatly behind a large tree trunk, peeking around in the direction of the loggers trail. The three of them unite and move forward cautiously for a closer look.

Once they get a few yards from the trail, they spot the reason for the townsfolk’s frightened reactions. They see a large humanoid slowly shambling up the trail, now just a few dozen feet from entering Beachtown. The monster is large, nearly 8 feet tall. It is not something that any of you immediately recognize. It almost looks like a cross between a bugbear and a gorilla. It is covered in a dirty grey/black fur that reeks of death and dirt. It has thick, long arms that end in clawed hands that are clenched into big tight fists. It seems to notice the three of you, since you are the only ones still around this immediate area. It begins slowly bumbling in your direction, moaning something in a low, guttural tone.

"Good gracious. Have you ever seen such a thing, Sotha? Do you... why, do you suppose it's trying to communicate with us?" says Chauncey, terrified, yet intrigued. For lack of a better idea, he tries holding up his hands in a non-threatening way and, drawing upon his unsteady memory of Basic Giant for the Beginning Student says, "How are things with you, generally? Are you in need of assistance? Your hat size must be very large," all while preparing to run, should the creature show no sign of understanding or become overtly hostile, or simply get too close.

Sotha lifts his bow to fire; but is somewhat stunned by Chauncey's babbling and looks at him in bewilderment. "Da books dun made you a mad mahn!"

Turning back toward the creature, Sotha raises his bow to fire.

OOC: I honestly don't know what to do here...do I roll initiative dice first, attack rolls...?

No problem Dalor. If you don't know, just ask. Nobody in this game has a problem with helping out the new players. :D

If you want to make an attack on this thing, just make your 2 missile fire rolls, then copy and paste them into your action post.

You don't have to make any initiative rolls if you don't want to. Most of that stuff is all explained badly in the House Rules thread.

Looking around at the way the others are doing it might be the best way to figure these things out, but don't be afraid to ask questions if you're not sure.

Lightfinger also looks like he is about to make an attack on this abomination.

Sotha lets fly two arrows toward the beast that is coming into the village...but the monster is not likely to know he even tried as the arrows fly so wildly away!

[1d20+3] = 5+3 = 8 [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5 [1d20+3] = 2+3 = 5 [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2

Chauncey tries to befriend this strange beast that clearly has some mental issues. He gets its attention and asks if its doing well, commenting on its hat size of all things. Sotha believes that the books must have surely gotten to the odd white mahn, so he takes the lead role in confronting this large monster.

Seeing the halfling Lightfinger move up a little closer and bravely hide behind the corner of a shack, the native fighting man rushes up into the action with his bow at the ready. He fires two arrows that don't even come close to the thing as it slowly turns and lumbers towards the trio, but at least he didn't anger the thing in the process. Lightfinger motions that he is going to try to get around behind the beast, hoping that the others can keep its attention long enough.

It charges at Sotha and Chauncey, now rushing at them from only about 30 feet away. Screams and shouts echo throughout the town as the fight commences. The moans and grunts emanating from it are impossible to translate, but the wizard thinks he hears the word "brains" mentioned over and over. Now getting a little better look at the creature, he also notices its glazed, gray eyes are blank and lifeless.

"Error in judgement! Error in judgement! Not friendly!" shouts Chauncey as he backpedals for all he's worth. Were he thinking tactically, he'd try to draw the creature's attention to give the others a better chance to attack it, but he is not much for combat tactics on a good day, and right now he's indeed not thinking, no, just backpedalling.

As Chauncey backpedals away from the monster, and Lightfinger hustles around the back of the shack, they spot another man quickly rushing upon the frightening scene from the direction of the Hi-Lo. He is a middle aged human that looks a bit weathered, but is otherwise handsome and well groomed enough. He looks to be pulling something out of his robes as he gets closer to the fight.

Sotha debates whether he should fire one more arrow, or prepare for hand to hand combat, as the creature continues its advance towards him.
