Character generation and questions character wise:

#1 Post by Spearmint »

This thread will be for comments and questions regarding character creation.

We have a Campaign ID: 519.

To start with, I am using the ADnD 1e Players Handbook and the character races and classes from the Unearthed Arcana. It covers all the races playable and classes. I advise players to read through the following notes on:

Character Creation and Playable Classes and Races

Please can everyone use a character sheet from the Unseen Servant. We are going to add a couple of sections as we develop the game but for now they can be included in the notes. When completed you can add it here for approval.

The method I favour is to use the standard: Roll [4d6c1] and assign the statistics in any order of preference. You may also racially adjust your ability scores if you are playing a non-human character. This is very much a game in which your starting abilities may go up and down, depending upon your actions, discoveries, skills and wounds.

Create a little backstory for your character. The quality of the story will be rewarded with an extra goodie bag of magic items. Castle Amber is a strange module, the characters are 'parachuted' into the grounds of the castle and have to adventure and pick up the story from there. For different reasons, each character has a link to the Amberville family and each one has a quest of mission to complete as part of the adventure, wether to discover a family heirloom, recover a lost arcane relic, lift a generational curse or fulfill a sworn oath. These shall be dealt with on personal forums which I shall get admin to set up in due course.

The starting for your character XP point is going to be set at 28,002xp, which should see most single class characters at around 5th or 6th level. For dual classed characters you may split the xp evenly into 14,001 per class. No tri-class players.

Roll [3d6x10] to generate your starting gold piece allowance. A frugal amount, hence signing your life away to go adventure. Equip your character, you may have a standard set of normal clothes, a spellbook and spell materials for clerics or mage classes, a set of basic thieves tools for rogues and a basic backpack and bedroll free of charge. Everything else is book price. I will also award each character with a set of magic items, normally something to wear, something to use and something to play with...

All characters may start the game with maximum hit points at first level plus or minus any constitution modifiers. After that please roll using the forum dice rollers for additional levels.

Any questions please ask. Thank you for playing, enjoy.

Ready for Approval (Note I used 3d6 rolls as I rolled this a day early sorry I was an early bird)
Stat Rolls: I can re-roll if you wish
Stats [3d6] = 15 [3d6] = 12 [3d6] = 13
Stats [3d6] = 7 [3d6] = 13 [3d6] = 8
Starting Money [2d6x10] = 7x10 = 70
HP lvl 2-5 [1d6] = 1 [1d6] = 1 [1d6] = 5 [1d6] = 1

You know just cus it's Christmas and you are the first to post I am going to let you re-roll your HP, so you have a roll of [4d6+6] to better the 14 you've rolled. (rolling 3 x 1's I had to take pity... ;) ).

Alright :D so then my new HP is 19

HP Re-Roll [4d6+6] = 13+6 = 19

What about the stats since I rolled them as 3d6 re-roll as 4d5c1 or just roll one more d6 and split the difference?

As for the starting gold doesn't worry me as at the moment I'm fairly geared up and still have coin to spare.

I normally use the forum 4d6c1 method as it cuts the lowest dice number out and you get a better average or above average stat ability. You can keep the ones you rolled, taking a new roll and you might not get the character you want to play which in my view is more important than having a topped out hero. I adjust the challenge of every encounter anyway so a party really strong in muscle may have extra fodder to defeat, top heavy with spell casters and you will face more spell sapping dangers.

In reality I would only really wish to re-roll my INT and CHA the other stats are fine. However I know what you mean by the character I want to play...but I just kind of alter his backstory/appearance based on getting lower scores than I had hoped. The other stats worked well for a gnome thief I thought. I already had this character concept in mind I have a few like that actually..

Gnome brothers Glimble & Nimble one a thief one a cleric (sometimes he's a druid) ;)
Dwarf brothers Drax, Brax & Grax usually two are fighters one is a cleric or thief

Geez, my rolls for HP were worse than GW's when you factor in he was rolling 6s and I was rolling 10s. I didn't even roll enough combined to max out one die. My Con bonus was only 1 point worse than my rolls, and if we do adjust for age, it will end up being better. I thought I was going to have a seriously bad-ass tank, but it turns out she has a glass jaw. :(

HP 2nd: [1d10] = 3; 3rd: [1d10] = 2; 4th: [1d10] = 1; 5th: [1d10] = 3

As a cavalier, that won't keep her from being in the thick of combat. She'll still be able to dole out lots of pain, she just won't be able to take as much. Evildoers should still be worried.

Maybe I'll rename her Rhonda Rousey. She's good as long as nobody hits her.

Quick question. Is weapon specialisation available as per UA?

you can choose to specialize with the weapons that you are proficient with but doing so will limit the number of weapons that are available for you to use. And I think it is a skill reserved for fighter types only.

I'm pretty sure specialization is only available for the fighter class itself, not the other fighter types.

I just looked it up- weapon specialization is available to Fighters and Rangers. Specialization with melee weapons or crossbow requires a second proficiency slot, while specialization with a bow other than a crossbow requires three proficiency slots. Specialization must be taken at character creation. Later on, the character can gain double specialization, taking a proficiency slot gained at a higher level to double specialize if they had chosen to specialize in a melee weapon at creation. Only melee weapons, excluding pole arms and the two-handed sword may be double specialized.

Just FYI Nimble has been replaced I just used the same stat rolls I already had for the Gnome Thief and rearranged them for Drago the magic user
HP [4d4+4] = 12+4 = 16
Starting Money [3d6x10] = 10x10 = 100

hello folks, apologises for the late start.

WYSIWYG.....what you see is what you get. So no more character adjustments I am going with what is and what is on your sheet is there for now. Castle Amber is a tough module, full of tricks, challenge and thought provoking encounters. A word of wisdom is to proceed with caution, check everything out and never be afraid to ask any questions. Teamwork and courage will see you successful though I pull no punches with dice rolls, heroes fall and die at the point of honest combat or ignorant mistakes. It is your responsibility to know what your character can do, what macro they use and what spells they cast.

To help with the adventure but still offer a challenge I offer the following random rolled or DM created magic' to aid and abet the party. There is plenty more to find if you will seek for it.

Viola Belle: Leather Armour +2, A dozen +1 arrows, a full jar of Keoghtoms' Ointment, a bullseye lantern with a bulb of 'Continual Light' set in it.

Drake: Bracers of Defense AC 6, A Rod of Cancellation, A vial of Oil of Etheralness, 3 x door spikes each enchanted with a Hold Portal spell.

Wommack: A Ring of Fire Resistance, battle axe +1, a potion of Sweet Water, Forked divining sticks enchanted to cast 'Detect Snares and Traps'.

Sister Varla: Matching pair of fitted Scalemail+2 (one for the dog), A Necklace of Prayer Beads (with 1x Bead of Blessing, 1 x Bead of Atonement), A potion of Diminution, Communion goblet which when filled and shared offers 1hp of healing to a number of people equal to your level. (must be folk of similar alignment).

Lady Ryllae: A Brooch of Shielding (with 49pts left), A Dagger +1,+2 vs Shape changers, A potion of Clairvoyance, a compass with Detect Undead spell cast on it.

Bob: Boots of Striding and Springing, A Broadsword +2, A potion of extra-healing, A 'Snakespear', (enchanted +1 spear which when thrown animates into a constricting python).

Bors: Cloak of Protection +2, Hammer +2, A potion of Undead Control ( Wraiths), 2 x 'Fire and Forget' javelins, (just lock on target and trigger to fire, they will home in on them to hit even if fleeing around corners, dam 2d6)

Drex: A Periapt of Health, Short Sword +1, a potion of Gaseous form, a flute of Snake charming.

hope you enjoy and adjust your sheets please accordingly.... :)
