Weatherwax Meetinghouse

#1 Post by Marullus »

Originally an old grain mill with a waterwheel next to a long-dried streambed, this structure was rebuilt by dwarven artisans in June 2021.

Sitting on the edge of an dry riverbed, Beith's watch appears to be a welcoming, two-story building with a small addition. The front of the building faces southeast, the second story is slightly smaller than the main floor with an exterior staircase leading to a flat roof. The building has perches built onto the facade in every direction, allowing for an owl or other bird of prey to roost and hunt.

Vassar Clements greets visitors at the meeting house door, a pleasant brown-frocked Druid of Beith.

He offers the following services at the Meeting house to any who express faithfulness to Beith:
  • Religious worship and study of Beith's laws.
  • A bowl of hearty mushroom soup served with brown bread and goat cheese from their farmstead for anyone who is hungry. (Free common meals)
  • Healing for those injured (Cure Light Wounds once per day per person)
  • Aid in finding lost livestock in the plains.
  • Purification of food and drink, particularly that gathered in the forest, to ensure health of those in the enclave.
  • Sale of Beith's healing potions, [Extra Healing, 3d6+3, useable in thirds], for 75gp each to Beith devotees and 115gp each to all others.

In the courtyard outside the meetinghouse door is an incredibly lifelike statue of a dwarf. The statue of Rhybek Baerdrum is frozen in a battle pose, his bare arm thrust forward as if it had a shield, and his empty hand raised above his head as if clutching the haft of a weapon, his mouth open and yelling an alarm. His ruddy flesh, red beard, and gleaming banded mail are all now a dull gray - converted into a smooth and polished limestone that forever calcifies him for the ages. (Added 19 July 2021)

A small farmhouse about 40' square with a loft roof and attached livestock barn nestle's nearby, tending several small fields of crops. (Built first week of August 2021)

Though the approach and the farmed lands are clear, the far side of the meetinghouse is a robust thicket of trees and brambles, sprung up mid-summer 2021 and grown to full maturity, protecting the structures somewhat from whatever roams this way from the Dark Forests that lie to the northeast.

June 4 - While working on the wall foundations, the construction site was assaulted by a bizzare winged creature which sought humanoid prey. This animal has short dark blue fur and has a body shaped like a lion's. Its face resembles that of a cow and its eyes remind you of a basilisk's. It has clawed feet, a pair of feathery wings, and a pair of short horns. It approached from the north-northwest and dove from the sky. The guardsmen were able to slay it without injury to any workmen; the body was skinned and the hide preserved for your inspection.

12-13 June 2021
With work on the tower progressing, an adventuring group composed of Fingers, Silent, Neegan, Rhybek, Idriss, and Ablesforth finds their way here from the west. They tell tales of a lost city in that direction replete with traps and dangerous creatures. They rest for the right and compose themselves, then set off due north on the morning of 13 June to seek the Kobold Tower which was their original goal.

June 14 - The project nearing completion, a flock if bizarre creatures tried to take Maurice's tower as their roost; a half-dozen of them in total. This animal has a scaly dark purple hide and a body shaped like a swan's. Its face resembles that of a chicken and its eyes remind you of a monitor lizard's. It has a frill around its neck, a pair of bat-like wings, and a pair of short horns. They resisted strongly, but the guards were able to run them off.

Fingers, Silent, Neegan, Rhybek, Idriss, and Ablesforth return from the north, again resting a night here at the outskirts of the Dwarven camp. They drag sledges with treasures from a Kobold Tower, found due north. In the morning the rise again and depart to the city.

18 June 2021

The work is completed and the dwarves depart.

A leather-clad guardsman rests on a stool outside the door, whittling something held in his hand and whistling to himself. His companion rests within, the pair taking turns as they watch the property.

14 June

Clay the Badger, accompanied not only by a large mastiff and an owl, but also a young farm girl, Clarabelle, makes their way to Beith's Watch. With the help of Clarabelle, Clay is reintroduced to the dwarfs and soldiers he has retained. Clay comments on the fine workmanship, asking the dwarfs to educated him to the most fine details that he would not know to look for, having grown up in the woods. The fireplaces and stairs to the upper levels are beautiful, but the cellar is a marvel, with the dwarfs having transformed the remaining piles of copper into a beautiful archway around the tunnel that once led to a ghoul nest.

Clay asks the foreman for a moment of his time. The badger paw at a backpack and pulls out the Horn of Jarkul, letting the foreman take a moment to recognize it. Clay then tells about his most recent adventure, including the brave death of Thundred and his entourage of Blackhelm dwarfs, and that of Shortbread, who had accompanied the group into the depths of the mountain and sounded the ancient drums, thereby awakening Scatha, the dragon that had eaten an earlier bunch of Blackhelms. Clay quietly contemplates the thought that, perhaps, the northlands are not a good fit for members of this clan.

Clay finishes by stating his intent to return the Horn of Jarkul, Shield of Thundred and all the other items gathered by Shortbread prior to the dwarf's untimely demise at the hands of a troglodyte. Who do i present it to? What is the best way to do this? I wish only to respect Thundred and his clan-dwarfs, and their custom of passing special items to their kin.

The lizard swans are driven off before Clay's arrival, so he regrettably does not get to see them in person. He is able to still inspect the hide from the earlier encounter. The two Guardsmen look wan and pale; their eyes are sunken and they report that they're not sleeping well in the night, both of them afflicted with nightmares since they came here.

The dwarf foreman solemnly accepts the news, listening intently to the whole tale. "A loss, a broken chain unmendable. Thundred's father is Thanrir, Master Artificer of the Blackhelm Clan. You must bear these tidings to him," he says sorrowfully.

When night falls, the dwarves open a half-dozen casks of dark beer from their wagons and sing solemn dirges well into the night, commemorating their lost cousins in their own way.

Clay wakes tired on 15 June to find the dwarves already hard at work despite their late night.

Clay asks the guardsmen what sort of nightmares they have, wondering why all three would be experiencing them. He asks if the dwarfs have had similar experiences. It would be his luck to build on a cursed patch of earth.

In the morning, Clay thanks the foreman for the information, packs up his belongings and heads back to Gaul, telling the others he will try to come back within a day or so. He contemplates the information about the nightmares as he walks. Ghouls lived there for ages, perhaps there is still a taint in the ground.

A statue of a dwarf is placed by the door of Beith's Watch. It is under the eaves to protect it from the weather. As people come and go, the story grows about the dwarf, Rhybek, that was petrified by a cockatrice in the wilds beyond the Meeting House.

EDIT:
Over the next week, or so, trees and brush start growing at a rapid rate around the meeting house. In some areas the brush is thick, impeding passage, in other areas the trees shoot straight up, forming a small grove.

Clay casts Plant Growth daily, experimenting with focusing it onto a single plant (trees), and over a wide area.

A messenger arrived from Frogmorton, delivering a simple wooden box. "With regrets, Master Pierpont says he cannot store this ob for you," he says. He delivers the box and departs.

Per conversation in my private forum:
Finding the messenger has neither information, nor coin, Clay asks if there is anything else from Pierpont. And how Pierpont seemed when the orb was given to him. He inspects the orb to see if it is the same one he handed to Piepont, fearing the man was cursed or ensorcelled.

The orb is indeed the one Clay provided, swirling inside with liquid darkness. The messenger looks nervous. "Can't say much about what's normal for a wizard,
but he was rightly in a hurry to have this back to you... Please just take it, Mr... Ummmm... Badger."

Clay drums his long digging claws on the wooden doorframe. Weatherwax. But everyone calls me "Clay." He accepts the orb and invites the messenger inside the meeting house. Not a short jaunt from there to here. Let Vassar make us a cup of tea. I'll join you as you head back to town and find out about this thing.

When the tea is finished, Clay calls to Morr and Maurice, and asks Calarabelle if she would accompany them. I want to know what's up with this thing and maybe drop it off at the Infirmary. They'll know what to do with it.

When Clay returns, he finds that the Meetinghouse has been assaulted. His guards were knocked aside like dolls and the building ransacked. When Vassar returned, he was able to heal the guardsmen and has spent two days getting the meetinghouse back in order.

"They said it was a horrible wolf-like being, massive in size, with glowing orange eyes. It had a strength and ferocity they could not hope to confront, though they tried. It took a miracle of Beith to save their lives... we are lucky it was looking for something else and not for its meal."

Clay nods grimly at the tale. He apologizes to the guards and thanks them for their bravery.

He confides to Vassar that the werewolf was after the Orb of Endless Suffering, and that it was directed here by Ms. O'Hare. The soldiers she rode out with - those she brought back nearly dead - admitted as much to me in the Golden Tooth Tavern last night. And not because of her goddess's desire for truth, but rather a disinterest in the lives and safety of the followers of Beith. Any death or injury caused by this creature are brought by Ms. O'Hare. I recommend she no longer receive hospitality here. Clay spends a while assisting where he can, filling Vassar in about his intended route north, and what he knows of Neegan's expedition.
He asks that Vassar check in of Gus and his family as well

Edit: Clay passes the word about Foxy's indescretion to Mother Lita

Between Clay's sacred mushroom cave and Bianca's blue tormentil patch, any devotee of Beith (including NPCs) - rangers, druids, witches - get a free potion before every expedition.
I don't know that a price is set for sale beyond that, though Marullus and I had discussed 50-75 for devotees.

Okay.... How about 75 for devotees (druids, rangers and witches of the Sacred Grove), and 115 for everyone else.
Considering it is supposed to be 3x as effective as a regular healing potion, but you cannot just us it for 5sips..
