Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
Sorry, but Sham would ask for some clarification. "The hobgoblins came back with the prisoners, not the goblins. Is that what you are saying?"
Sham favors going into the ogre/goblin caves to assess the damages done and possibly find the connection to the hobgoblin caves.

Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
Clarification: the hobgoblins were the ones who came back from raiding, with the prisoners.
25th of Shining, 12:00 pm
After the parley with the kobolds is over, the group cautiously moves across the canyon to the malodorous cave where the ogre made his home. They find it still quite smelly, though the bearskin is missing. Henry has to coax his mule within, and keep her well away from the pile of bones and offal that still remains in the corner.
Lardo checks the spikes holding the secret door closed; they are still intact and in place. It would take several stout blows from a hammer to knock them free.

Saeros Silversword
Saeros looks around carefully as the group plans their next move.
Since the bearskin is gone, someone or something was here. So are we to enter the Goblin lair and then to the Hobgoblins?
He pulls his sword and sharpens it while keeping watch.

Cormac "So are we to hammer the spike out and go in this way or just go to the entrance of the goblin cave and go from there?"

Brother Henry - Priest
Henry listens in and says "I think we should leave the spikes intact and proceed from the main entrance - cautiously. We need to act quickly to rescue those captured before some horrible fate befalls them!"
Henry reluctantly agrees to Lardo doing an invisible recon - but insists on his being very careful. He'll wait till the tactical types decide to proceed. During his time waiting, he'll calm Wilbur and get him tied securely.

Since the door from the ogre cave was spiked shut, we can likely assume the hobgoblin would not know about it. We could use that to our advantage, as either a way to slip in behind any guards they may have at the cave entrance, potentially allowing us to surprise them from behind- assuming, of course, they left any guards at the entrance. It would also allow us an escape route if it becomes necessary. No matter which route we take into the caverns, be it goblin or hobgoblin, I feel we should remove the spike so we have access to the door should circumstances turn against us. Perhaps Lardo's scouting mission can help determine our course of action.

Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
Proceeding with Lardo's outlined actions from the OOC thread...
25th of Shining, 12:30
While most of the party waits by the secret door in the ogre's cave, Lardo slinks back out and over to the goblin entrance, where he slugs down a mouthful of potion. His skin tingles and he watches in satisfaction as his body fades away into invisibility. Doing his best to be quiet, he skulks into the tunnel, but soon discovers the flaw in his plan...the cave complex is completely unlit, and dark as a moonless night.
Does Lardo want to proceed in the dark? If he carries a light, the light will be visible, but not you or the source of it...it will appear like a mobile patch of light moving down the tunnel.

OOC: Unless anyone has a better idea, Lardo will light a torch. He needs to be able to see.
Failure is always an option.
Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
How about he comes back and lets someone with infravision take a swig? Someone who could spin an illusion of something else in the area if he accidentally makes a sound or is smelled out? Someone small and inconspicuous even when he's not invisible?

Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
The torch is the best option we (Lardo) have right now. Part of the potion is already used, we might as well make the most of it.
Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
Lardo's reconnaissance: (will unspoiler when the rest of the group joins him)
25th of Shining, 12:45 pm
Cursing under his breath, Lardo lights a torch and proceeds, the flickering light of his torch illuminating the rocky walls around him. The thief continues on his way, soon coming to the first split in the passage, where a tunnel branches off to the left (the party has not explored this way yet). Continuing on, he follows the rightward bend around the corner and reaches the guardroom where they found the gold coins, and slew the ogre. The floor still bears dried bloodstains, but there is no sign of life.
The corridor continues on, the initial stretch still blackened with soot and reeking of oil and burned goblin flesh. Lardo cautiously goes 'round the corner, to where he saw the large chamber full of goblins. That room is now silent and empty, but bears the marks and wreckage of an extensive fight. There are no bodies, but bloodstains are plentiful, and the floor is littered with smashed furniture, bits of crockery, and broken crossbow bolts. In the center of the room is the rotting carcass of a large quadruped, which has been skinned; Lardo is no naturalist, but can tell it was a huge dog or wolf. The smell is ripe and powerful.
In addition to the tunnel Lardo entered by, there are two corridors leaving this room, to the left and the right. He hears nothing, and sees no sign of any habitation.
Meanwhile, Cormac and Saeros wait just at the entrance to the goblin caves, while the rest of the party waits inside the ogre cave, waiting for the lone thief to return...or not.

Brother Henry - Priest
Henry paces about nervously, pausing to pray a quick prayer for Lardo's safe return. He'll stay near the cave entrance, keeping an eye and ear out.

Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
At the secret door, Lardo will deliver the pre-figured three-nock signal letting them know that the coast is clear.
In the large chamber, he will start to edge down the left passage, still moving silently.

Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
Apologies for delay; I have work training this week, and with school starting for my kids it's left me precious little time.
To the main group: when Lardo gives the 3 knock signal, are you pounding the spikes out and going through the secret door? Or are you leaving them in place, and going 'round to enter via the main goblin cave entrance?
Keep in mind that Cormac and Saeros are at the goblin cave mouth; if you wish to go through the secret door, someone will need to step outside and signal to them, if you want them to join you.
Sorry for lack of clarity; about 15 minutes have elapsed from when Lardo left the ogre's cave. The time is currently 12:45 pm.Gelatinous Q wrote: OOC: How much time has elapsed?

Re: Third Expedition - The Caves of Chaos
Cormac worries that something is wrong when he has not heard back from Lardo "Think one of us should go check on Lardo?" he asks his fellow guard at the goblin cave mouth.

Cormac takes a throwing axe in one hands and lights a torch in the other then follows Saeros in search of Lardo.
