Back at the Keep...

#1 Post by Spartakos »

This will be a general thread for all IC action that takes place in the Keep or its immediate environs.

Tamworth Keep is a fortified town, designed to provide a base for troops to defend the local area against humanoid incursions, predation of bandits, and the like. The castelland, Sir Stephen Treynor, holds the keep on behalf of the Baronet of Carlisle.

Known locations in town:

The Smithy: run by a Kent, a dark-haired smith with a heroic physique, this smithy can handle repairs of weapons and armor, as well as shoeing horses and other various metalwork. Kent can craft some weapons and do highly competent repairs, but is not a trained armorer or bladesmith.

The Trader: Susan, a vivacious woman with short hair the color of a raven's wing, runs this trading post along with her husband Ralf. She is honest, but a hard bargainer. She deals in most goods other than gems and jewerly, and is the major source for most things that can't be produced in the local area, including arms & armor, mounts and livestock, bulk goods (cloth, spices, etc), and so forth.

The Provisioner: Allen and his wife Iris run this shop, which supplies food and local goods and equipment. They do not deal in weapons or armor (aside from daggers, hand axes, and arrows), but can provide most other gear/clothing/supplies from the LL book. They are on good terms with the trading post, and will refer folk to them for any purchase they cannot handle.

The Bank: Hal Groening, a wealthy merchant and former military officer, is the main financial broker for the Keep. He does some trade in expensive luxury goods (such as gems, jewelry, ivory, and such), but also loans and stores money. Money and valuables can be stored securely at no charge if left for at least 1 month; if withdrawn sooner, there is a 10% fee. Loans are at 10% interest each month; any loan of greater than 10 gp requires collateral to be left.

The Sign of the White Rose: this is the Keep's only inn, run by Arthur (tall with blond curls) and his wife Mera (slim, red-haired). Sleeping in the common room is 1 sp per night; a private room (there are 8) costs 1 gp per night, and could accommodate up to 3 people if they don't mind close quarters and some sleeping on the floor.

The Sign of the Archer: the Keep's tavern, where travelers or locals can have a mug of something and grab some deliciously prepared repast. It is run by Oliver, a wiry man with a blond mustache, along with his family and his close friend Grant, who keeps the clientele from getting too rowdy (Grant is a skilled pugilist). This is a good place to meet people from all walks of life, both in the keep area and travelers passing through.
Menu includes beer at 1 sp a mug, wine at 1 ep per cup, and good honey mead at 1 gp per cup. Meals range from 3-5 sp, depending on quality (stew, bread, and cheese is around 3 sp, a savory cut of roast joint with mushrooms and potatoes would be 5 sp).

The Guildhouse: the Merchant's Guild holds considerable sway in this area; any buying and selling of goods is subject to a 10% tax, payable to the Guild. This is enforced by the Keep's soldiery; anyone bringing goods (other than what they carry on their own person) into the Keep must check them at the gate, and store them in a warehouse. Taxes are assessed on any sales made in the keep. Membership in the Guild costs 50 gp per year, and allows trading with only a 3% tax, plus use of the Guildhouse for meetings and lodging. The Guildmaster is Wayne Greyson, a man of dark hair and dignified mein.

The Hallowed Halls of Wisdom: this temple honors all the gods, but its chief priestess Mother Camilla favors Enlil, Minerva, and Vulcan. She is a grey-haired woman of stately carriage, who walks with a slight but noticeable limp. Healing and other services can be provided for a donation, to suitably pious congregants. Most of the keep's inhabitants know her as a wise counselor who is always willing to hear a troubled tale.

The Inner Bailey is closed to most; only those with business with the Castellan (or in service to the Keep) are allowed within.

Geert Harfoot makes himself at home at the Sign of the Archer, drinking his fill at night, laughing some, but mostly minding his own business. He secures a private room at the White Rose for two nights, figuring he'll move on soon as work presents itself. But he recently received his severance pay after the most recent border skirmishes and for now is enjoying life outside of the chain of command. He has no intent on ever going back, his years of promised service filled up.

Geert jokes around with the wait staff at the inn, fishing for free scraps to feed Aggie, his herd dog, a curly-haired mass of white and brown like a noble's shag carpet. But Aggie seems less than comfortable around so many strangers, with nothing really to do, so during the day after checking on his pony, Geert fashions a couple of rope leashes from some hemp rope he carries with him, weaving a leather thong into one end of each rope to make a loop for a slip knot and tying another loop on the other end. Then he goes looking for a muzzle, just in case it's needed.

Geert tries the leash out on Aggie in the yard. "Hate to have to do it, Ag, my girl. I hates it terrible, but these long-legs won't take to your running the place." He spends time getting Aggie to heel and walk on by. Though Geert's short, he's tall for a halfling and stout enough to give Ag a good yank when it's needed.

Expenses deducted. This halfling's living life to the full. Let me know if a muzzle can be had, Spart, or if he can fashion something serviceable with help from the smithy and provisioners. I'm picturing Aggie's specialty as guarding/herding scout ponies and pack mules left behind whenever Geert's company had to hoof it on foot.

The tavern-keeper's daughter, Laurel, seems to take to Geert's dog, and despite Aggie's normal nature, she submits with fairly good cheer to being petted and fussed over by the willowy girl, though her mother soon chides her to get back to work. Her mother, Dinah, does not share her daughter's enthusiasm for the great shaggy canine, and gives it a number of wary looks.

There is indeed a fair crowd at the tavern right now; in addition to a number of locals, there are a trio of out of work mercenaries, who quite possibly finished fighting in the same dust-up Geert so recently participated in. All are wearing fighting leathers, with swordbelts but no other weapons to hand, and are drinking and gambling amongst themselves; they appear to be long time comrades-in-arms.

Also, sitting at a table by herself is a tall, somber woman with honey blond hair cut blunt at the shoulder; she wears elaborately engraved plate armor, and a surcoat bearing the Keep's emblem; a shield divided per fess, black above white, with a crimson saltire overlaid. In the brief time you've been here, you have heard her named...Dame Joanna Dark, the bailiff of the keep. She is responsible for entirety of the outer bailey (the town within the walls).

Visiting the trading post, Geert has no difficulty in procuring a sturdy muzzle. "Fine craftsmanship, master halfling, couldn't ask for sturdier," Susan tells him. "The leatherworker who made these based the design on the same kind they use on those big Eoran wolfhounds."
1 gp for the muzzle.

Littbarsky

Has taken the route from Stonebridge and the River Vye crossing a few times. This time playing shotgun to a wagon supply of ale. The Stonebridge Pedigree is a well known and popular stout. "Just like me!" he hails the drayman finishing a 'taster' mug.

Littbarsky, guard duties over for the season, his militia draft finished seeks out a few known companions he expects to be in and around the Keep. Littbarsky spies the Keep bailiff, Miss Dark. "Found any trolls yet?" he jests with her, as the Vye shield heralds a chopped trolls head. If he can take a seat he will. "ah if the truth be known, we ain't seen much in the way of trolls for seasons. Occasional goblins we skewer raiding caravans and we had a boars head from a hunt. Anything exciting happen around the most lately?", he asks politely and signals for an ale, Stonebridge of course.

As Littbarsky rides into the Keep, he and the drayman are greeted by Corporal Macsen, the hulking petty officer in charge of the gates. The big man is gruff and surly as ever, but the teamster takes it with a look of long-suffering...Macsen's temperment is well known to those who need to frequently come and go from the Keep.

Dame Joanna eyes the dwarven warrior cooly as he sits at her table, but raises no objection. "Master...Littbarsky, wasn't it?" Clearly she doesn't recall him very specifically, but is able to put a name to his rather unusual appearance, having seen him on previous visits. Up close, he can see that the runes graven on her armor are religious emblems, inlaid in silver.

"Nay, no trolls. Our patrols have seen little in the way of trouble to the south, but the northern roads have been even more dangerous than usual. A merchant caravan was attacked scarce three days ago. A teamster--the only one of the party to escape--made his way back to the keep, and told us they were hit by a mixed force of goblins and hobgoblins. It seems the devil-worshipers took prisoners...may the gods have mercy on them, and Yamai grant them a quick death." The cannibal proclivities of goblinkin are well-known in these parts.

Roy, the tavern-keeper's son brings the dwarf a mug of Stonebridge ale, and makes a jest about how he won't deign to drink the local brewing. "Must get mighty thirsty when you're too long away from home."

Brother Henry - Cleric

After arriving at the Keep two days past with his buddy Lardo, Henry has secured a room at the innfor Lardo, and some space in the common room for himself, and arranged for his faithful donkey Wilber to be boarded. He also has visited the tavern, and finally ventures to the Halls of Wisdom to make a donation and offer his services to Mother Camille, going out of his way to expand on his travels and mission thus far.

He spends the rest of his day wandering about, trying to get to know as many people about the keep as he can. Once the sun gets low in the sky, he makes his way to the tavern, entering and nodding greetings to those present, and waving at the proprietors. "Hello Oliver! Good day, Grant! How about some soup and some of those tasty potatoes, eh? Oh, and a tankard of that wonderful ale, if you would. Say, have you seen Master Lardo today?" Henry then makes his way to a small table in the corner, sitting down facing the doorway with a broad smile on his face, waving at those looking his way.

The elf cleric, Aron, secured himself a private room at the Sign of the White Rose.
He keeps to himself mostly, but ventures to the temple at least once per day to pray and practice his harp.

Lardo bids his friend, Henry, a blunt adieu and settles into his room at the White Rose, oiling his gear, sharpening his daggers, etc. Toward dusk, he leaves his room, locking up behind himself, and heads to the tavern, discretely checking doors on his floor to see if any have been left unlocked.

At the tavern, he'll take a seat at the bar and order some grub and a bottle of wine. "I believe an associate of mine has made arrangements for my supper," he says to the barkeep before tucking in. He scans the room for any habitues of interest ... or drunkards in need of a rolling.
Failure is always an option.

Henry's visit to the local church is pleasant; Mother Camilla approves of his self-appointed mission, though she cautions him to look to his safety if he ventures northward. "The Caves of Chaos have long been the home of the ragged tribes of maurauding humanoids, yet of late they seem more restless and savage in their predations." She says, sounding somewhat troubled, that she has heard rumors of a new cult...or perhaps, the resurgence of an old one...

He meets many of the Keep's denizens, most of whom are friendly and polite. He meets Connor and Lana, the smith's young son and daughter, playing outside near the smithy. Outside the provisioner's shop, the owners' son Wallace is overseeing the unloading of barrels of wine, doing tallies with a stylus on a wax pad. Soldiers in the livery of the Keep wander about in pairs, keeping a watchful eye over the peace of the town.

*****

Aron finds the Hallowed Halls of Wisdom welcoming to him as a fellow servant of the gods; a few of the other acolytes join him in song, if he permits. Mother Camilla herself often comes in the afternoon, where she sculpts figures in clay at the altar of Vulcan, her hands moving with deft assurance.

*****

Lardo finds that fellow travelers at the inn are not so trusting as not to latch their doors securely, and so proceeds on his way.

At the tavern, Dinah soon bustles out of the kitchen with a steaming plate of venison and fresh tender vegetables swimming in butter; the bottle of wine Oliver provides is not distinguished, but neither is it unpalatable. As he eyes the other patrons, Lardo sees a few that appear well into their cups, but none that look worth his while to accost...one has the roughspun jerkin of a stablehand, and the other is a guardsman, in the company of some of his more sober fellows.

For the record, I'm keeping things simple...all the tavern stuff is happening simultaneously, so Littbarsky, Lardo, and Henry are all here right now, as are the patrons I described above in response to Littbarksy.

Geert wanders into the tavern for a bite to eat, Aggie still tethered to her leash. He clucks his tongue at her. "We're not done yet, you and me. Will take some doing, but you'll mind, that a girl!"

He scratches her ruffed neck before pushing into the tavern and staking out an open place where he can sit and Aggie can lay on the floor. "Stay, girl," he commands, and waves at Dinah, cheerfully asking for a bowl of something and a mug of ale. "Oh, and a bowl of leftovers for Ag, here. Thank you mum." He notes the presence of several of his friendly companions and then eats with relish, ordering seconds, enjoying every warm bite, and pretending not to be listening in on the local gossip.

Of course, he's doing lots of listening and trying to gauge the attitudes, hopes, and fears of the locals especially. He keeps an eye on the mercenaries too, warily racking his brain to see if he remembers any of them or can recall any of their exploits, whether famous or infamous. He notes Dame Dark's presence with a periodic cheerful grin, as if he naturally assumes she will take notice of him. "That be the one in charge of the place, Ag. Now mind those manners."

Cormac takes the pay from the porcine merchant he had guarded from Carlisle to the Keep, weighing the coins in his hand before turning on his heel. He's a big man; six-four and weighing a tick over 16 stone with long red hair and a beard. The blue tattoos that mark his exposed arms and neck reveal him to be a Lamoran. With that huge double bladed batteaxe on his back, the good citizens of Tamworth give him a wide birth and as makes his way straight to the Sign of the Archer.

He'd been on the road with a fat merchant with an over inflated sense of self-worth for far too long. He needed a drink. Hell, he needed to get drunk. He was a man of prodigious appetites; for drink, food, gambling and women. Cormac was a man who enjoyed life to the full for his sort knew all to well the next day could be his last. As darkness fell, his memory of what happened later became fuzzy. He drank and gambled, that was for sure. Then there was a fistfight, over what he couldn't remember but it had been a glorious fight. Then there was that dark-haired lass that helped him back to his room at the White Rose.

The next day finds Cormac ambling back inside the tavern. He had lost his wages gambling and there was a bruise under one eye, but he was in good spirits. He notices Dame Joanna and gives her a wink and a roguish smile. Grabbing a tankard of beer, he sits while keeping an ear out for any gossip or news that might be to his advantage.

Geert can't recall who these particular mercs are...he's met a lot of sellswords in his career, and most are eminently forgettable. They appear to be lamenting their short wages, and discussing potential business opportunities.

*****

As Cormac sits down, Grant wanders over to his table and gives him a steady look, while folding brawny arms over a barrel chest. While not as big as the Lamoran, the bouncer is still not a man to be trifled with. He has the salt-and-pepper hair of an older man, and the graceful stride of a natural fighter.

"We're not gonna have a repeat of last night, are we, big man?" he asks in a voice just a little south of friendly. "Because if we do, you're not gonna get off as light...you're lucky them other lads started the fists flying and someone vouched for you, or you might've woken up in a cell this morning instead of yer bed. Word to the wise." He lays a finger along his oft-broken nose, and then heads over to lean against the wall where he can survey the barroom.

The dark-haired lass he recalls brings him an ale not long after...Thea, the tavern's barmaid. She's petite and slender, with a pair of big dark eyes a man could drown in. She gives him a saucy grin. "You weigh a ton of bricks, firehair. One or two more tankards, and I'd have had to leave you face down on the table." Oliver shouts for her to get to work, and with a flip of her hair and a twitch of her skirts, she turns to deal with another table of patrons.

Dame Joanna returns Cormac's wink and smile with a frosty stare. As bailiff, she does not take kindly to anyone disturbing the peace with tavern brawls; it had been her guards who had broken up the fight. That aside, she made it clear that she had no love for Lamorans, considering them godless heathen savages. Cormac gets the feeling that for half a copper, she'd gladly ban him from the Keep if he gets crosswise of the law again.

*****

For all those keeping their ears open, a few rumors are flowing about the room amid pipe-smoke and the yeasty smell of good brewing. There is some arguing over the orcs who dwell in the Caves, and what tribe they belong to...general consensus is that there are actually two different tribes who dwell there, the Head-Takers and the Scorpion Brothers. "Drink poison with their mother's milk, those ones," says one crusty old codger. "Use it to spice the hot sauce they make, for when they cook up a bit of man-flesh." His claims are laughed off by other men, though the looks on their faces and the shaky edge to their laughter show that their denials may be mere bravado.

Another man denies all rumors about the Caves, saying it's all a bunch of tall tales and moonshine..."Y'know how I know? Because no one's ever returned alive from the Caves to bear these tales. They're all made up by folk not brave--nor foolish--enough to go within a mile of the place. The only thing that ever came back from the Caves of Chaos is ghosts."

Littbarsky

The dwarf drinks his ale with usual cheerfulness and strokes his beard calmly. "Aye, Dame Dark, I know your heart, excepting for your duties here you might be off in a flash to their rescue, women and kids among them no doubt. Sill after three days and more the goblins and hobbies might still be half comatose from drinking their prizes and arguing over first dibs on the trove. Could be they have folk locked up and will ready them for ransom or meat over the coming weeks. Do you know where I might find this 'teamster'? If the caravan is not too far away, a trail, however bloody could be found. Littered with strips of cloth and cast aside jetsam. These guys I know from crossing the river are all stout of heart and blade. What is your assesment of the chances?"

Littbarsky indicate several of the group as they mingle in the tavern. He doesn't know them too well, perhaps passing acquaintances from tavern revelrys, local hunts and skirmishes. Making a little posse to go check the raided caravan out could be a good testing ground before we choose to go to the caves of Chaos?

Lardo gives Henry a nudge and nods toward the massive Lamoran as he takes his chagrining for last night's misbehavior. "Aye, now, Henry," he whispers, "I'm no judge of character, but that's the exact sort of brute we need to cast in with. Big, strong as an ogre, and dumb as a bag of hammers, more'n likely. That's your 'smiter of perfidy,' friend" He motions to the dark-eyed barmaid. "See here, my lovely," he says, "we'll stand that man his first tankard of ale." Then, taking in Cormac's full stature, he remarks, "Make that his first four. Tell him he drinks at the pleasure of the two gentlemen from Dunador." It's not Lardo's money after all; he can spend it freely as he pleases.
Failure is always an option.

Brother Henry - Cleric

Henry smiles at Lardo and nods in agreement as he speaks of the capable looking big man. "Yes, he does look quite imposing, for sure." He winces as Lardo offers up four rounds of ale and says quietly to his friend "Uh, let's not get him too sauced, shall we? He makes a gesture toward the other people who stick out at the tavern. "There are quite a few other serviceable looking adventuring types here from the look of it. I think we may be in luck! Oh, Cybele shines on us tonight good Lardo."

OOC: Henry will sit by cheerfully and keep an eye on Lardo to make sure he doesn't fall afoul of any of these patrons. If Lardo engages anyone in conversation (about adventure) Henry will make his way over to introduce himself.

Dame Joanna's reaction to Littbarsky's speech is a mixture of irritation and curiosity. "You presume overmuch if you think to know aught of my heart, Master Littbarsky. Even aside from my duties to the keep, to rush recklessly after one's foes out of misguided emotion is foolhardy. I would do no different than I am doing; pray for their souls, and lay plans to destroy their killers at a more opportune time. Caution, foresight, and strategy; these are the hallmarks of civilization."

She empties her glass...which the dwarf noticed held plain water. "If you wish to pursue these raiders, you are welcome to do so. There would be no need to follow the trail. I have no doubt they are among the vile tribes who lair in the Caves of Chaos, a plague on all decent folk. As for your chances..." she looks about the tavern at your motley band. "I could not say, for I know little of your skill at arms or various other talents. Trust in the gods, use your wits, and show no mercy to evildoers. Do this, and you may return safely. I bid you good evening." With that, she stands and departs, placing a few coins on the bar on her way out.

Not trying to kaibosh your plan, just saving time; the teamster has already left town, and could tell you little in any case, as he survived by playing dead. If you seek for the despoilers, the Caves are your destination. I didn't plan to run Keep on the Borderlands so you could wander around the woods now, did I? :)

And with that...let's get this party started, shall we?

After 1st Expedition...

Eglistrum Paharis

Having arrived back at the keep, the mage is looking forward to getting a room, but first there are details to be hashed out before the group splits up temporarily. How long are we planning on staying here before heading out again? If we stay two days, tomorrow I can detect for magic on the items we acquired and be able to memorize my one and only combat spell the next day, in preparation for our return to the caves. If we are only staying one day, I am not going to do that as it would leave me spell-less for the return trip.
Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Looking to recruit a new member, the party locates Sham Haddock at the tavern. He is an old gray-bearded dwarf, known around these parts as local rumor mill, mercenary, and jack of all trades. Tales of a group returning from the Caves of Chaos with gold has piqued his interest, and he is easily convinced to join the group on their next foray.

Brother Henry - Human Cleric

Henry will get a private room for Lardo and himself if they are available. He'll also use his daily allotment of healing to get the party up to full strength.

He'll also introduce himself to Sham and ask him (and the innkeep) if they know of any possible torchbearers or porters and where I might be able to find some at.

OOC: As for the spoils, Henry isn't concerned with what he gets other than a fair share. He trusts Lardo to look out for him in this respect.

With Henry off looking for hirelings, Lardo will make inquiries into how he might gain an audience with the castellan. Should anyone question why, he'll pat his backpack (which should be getting pretty ripe by now) and say, "I have something here I think he'll want to see."
