Brother Henry - Priest

Henry thanks Mother Camilla and takes his leave. Once he meets up with the others he shares the specifics of his meeting, especially how she was concerned about the cult. "Seems we've stirred up a real hornets nest. But I'm committed to bringing this cult down."

Henry hears of Saeros' quest to find some armor and he taps his pouch "I don't have too much, but I'm happy to share some of my coin toward your armor if you wish. As long as I have enough to give our help a bonus and to make a tithe to the church, I'm happy to share my bounty with you."

At the sight of the invite to the castellan, Henry gets wide eyed and looks himself up and down, smoothing his worn robes. "Oh my. What an honor. I'm afraid I may be ill dressed for such revelry." He nurses his ale, looking somewhat worried at his disheveled state...

In the tavern, most of the other drinkers and townsfolk are glad to listen to Sham's tales of adventure and danger. He can't help but notice Oliver scowling at him periodically, though...especially any time Roy seems to be listening to the dwarf's tales with particular attention.
Deciding that it wouldn't do to have the barkeep mad at him, Sham will tip a little extra. It seems obvious that he doesn't want his boy running off with dreams of adventure, and who can blame him.

Unless...unless there is something more nefarious to this keep. Maybe the hand of Thanatos has reached its icy grip further than they had thought. No, he's imagining things. That cult has just got him scared, and Oliver has been here too long to be up to no good. Besides, he's the only good barkeep in town, where else was he going to go? You must stop worrying so much Old Sham.

Sham will not let his wandering mind sour his revelry, but he makes an conscious effort to share a few more drinks than usual.
40 sp deducted for multiple rounds of beers and little extra for the barkeep.

At word of the invitation, Sham finds himself surprisingly honored. It's rare to get even a good look at the Castellian, much less a written invite. Of course he will be attending.

"We'll be dining with the Castellan tonight, Henry!" Lardo teases his friend. "That means no belching or farting at table as you're wont to do."

He'll make sure the ogre head is well packed in salt and secured in his chambers, then await the evenfell bell.
Failure is always an option.

Saeros Silversword

Saeros counts out the coins that comprise his share of the treasure, then sighs.

79 gp
12 ep
45 sp

He mutters to himself.
I would have thought adventuring would be more profitable. Perhaps next time....

The surely Elf cleans off his armor and sharpens his sword.
I need better armor, if I am to face Ogres and now the Undead.

======================

He counts off 50 gold coins and heads back, to put the 50gp as a deposit for a suit of plate.

Cormac will merely maintain his own equipment sharpening and oiling weapons and making sure his armor is well repaired and maintained. Then he joins the others in food and drink.

Henry blushes at Lardo's joke and says "Oh my... I'm not as accustomed to mingling with society as you are, my friend. I'd better clean up somewhat. I'll catch up with you before you depart."

Henry will inquire with the innkeep about getting some bathwater and some laundering for his garb. He'll also quickly visit Kal and Kyle and give each of them 15GP and tells them to be careful and rest up. He'll give Saeros 25GP toward his armor deposit, and he'll give his 45 SP to the innkeep to pay for his and Lardo's food and drink for a bit. He'll put the remaining coin in his stash for the moment.

Henry will take any time he has left to pray for a bit, get cleaned up and ready to dine with the Castellan.

Saeros Silversword

Saeros shakes his head slowly.
Ah, good Priest, you have a kind and generous soul. Im afraid I cannot take your coins. Please give it to the Church or if you must aid our journey- acquire some holy water to use against the evil we will face.

The Elf seems genuinely touched.

You are escorted into the Castellan's dining hall, brightly lit by many candles and flambeaux. Though it is cheered by tapestries and a few paintings, they do little to disguise the fact that this is still a place of war, a stronghold at the heart of the keep.

So it is with their host, who comes to greet the party. Sir Stephen Treynor is a tall man, nearly as tall as Cormac, and age has not bowed his back or slumped his shoulders. His face is craggy and well-lined, and what little hair remains to him is grey, but his eyes are keen and shrewd and he shakes the hand of each party member with a grip of iron. He wears a long robe of grey and gold brocade trimmed with silver fur, and his badge of office--a large red square-cut gem set in silver--hangs about his neck. At his side is a long broadsword in a filigreed scabbard; the hilt is almost plain, save for the huge topaz set in the pommel. He ushers you to the long table, where many other guests are already seated.

You recognize your youthful aides, Kal and Kyle, each sitting with their families. Ralf and Susan are dressed in bright finery and beam with pride; Kent the smith clearly looks uncomfortable, in his clothes of clean but plain homespun, but Kal's mother Lois seems cheerful and pleased to be here.

Sir Stephen introduces you to some of his officers, who are present as well. Lieutenant Corbeau is a well-built, shavepated man with the deep brown skin of one who comes from far to the south. Captain Caitlyn is a woman of medium height but broad shoulders, and shockingly beautiful, with a luxurious mane of black hair and full lips. Both are clad in fine garb tonight rather than their usual armor, though they do wear their swords, Captain Caitlyn managing it gracefully despite her long-skirted dress. Sergeant Kaesar, a lanky man with an easy smile, still wears his uniform, though it is clean and and his boots polished to a high gloss. Dame Joanna, the bailiff, is in attendance as well. She does not wear her engraved plate, but eschews womanly dress for tunic, jerkin, trousers and boots. Finally, seated near the Castellan's right hand is a petite elvish woman with honey blonde hair, dressed simply in a long tunic and leggings of lincoln green. Sir Stephen introduces her as Robyn, his advisor.

At the far end of the table sit a few other people of note, some of whom you have met before. Mother Camilla is there, in much more formal robes than usual, seated with two of her acolytes. Jasper is a slightly built blond man, who looks even younger than his twenty summers. Valentina is a tall slender woman, with aristocratic features and a white streak in her dark hair, who gives you all a cool smile. Another guest you recognize is Hal Groening, the town's banker, dressed in well-cut clothes of finest Dunadan wool, accompanied by a pretty woman in a silk gown whom he introduces as his paramour, Jasmin. One guest who appears new to you is a lean, dark man of somber mein who is introduced as Wayne Greyson, the Guildmaster of the local merchant's guild. He is accompanied by his wife, Victoria.

The adventurers are all seated near the head of the table, on either side, interspersed with the Castellan's officers. The dinner is hearty fare, a roast boar with apples and carrots, joints of venison, fresh trout, bowls of summer greens, fragrant brown bread and crocks of rich butter. Strong summer ale and red wine are both served, as well as strong cider. The conversation is primarily about light subjects, such as horses, hunting, and social activity about the keep; occasionally subjects like trade or politics crop up.

When the meal is done, custard tarts and apple pies are brought out, and the guests all mingle for a bit. Mother Camilla finds Henry and introduces him to Sister Valentina. "I have spoken with my assistants, and I feel that she would be best suited to aid you in your fight against the evildoers. I would ask that you do your best to watch over her, but she is adequate with weapons and versed in holy spells. Say when you venture forth next, and she shall go with you."
(Valentina will be a retainer to Henry; she will earn a half-share of treasure and XP.)

As the night winds down a bit, Sir Stephen asks if he can speak with you privily for a few moments, and leads you out onto the battlements to enjoy the cool night air. Once outside, you see another person will apparently be part of this conversation; Wayne Greyson is here, smoking a pipe, his brow creased with worry.

"Our esteemed guildmaster prevailed upon me to speak with you. He has a dilemma he would like aid with, and your recent deeds have led me to believe you may be able to assist," the old knight tells you. He motions for Master Greyson to explain, and the man puffs a few more times and begins.

"You are no doubt aware that perhaps a week or so ago, a merchant caravan was raided, by what we believe was either goblins or hobgoblins, or both acting in concert. It was thoroughly pillaged, and most who were present were slain...but one teamster did escape, and he said that prisoners were taken.
"Two of those prisoners were a master merchant named Gregor and his wife. While it is quite possible they have already met with a grisly end, I heard you have recently battled with these humanoids. If you were to continue your assaults, I would ask you to please look for them and if possible, rescue them. You would have the Guild's gratitude, which is no small thing."

Sir Stephen speaks up, adding "For such a task, I would be willing to provide some material aid; speak with my Captain and Dame Joanna, and they will see that your needs are seen to. In exchange, I would want some assurance from you that you will be doing your best to affect this rescue, or at least find out the fates of the prisoners."

Please feel free to write your own post describing the feast from your character's viewpoint, including anyone you want to converse with either during or after dinner. If any PC chose not to attend, please say so.
You need not give Sir Stephen your answer now, if you wanted to discuss it amongst yourselves, but he would want your answer by the morrow. If you were to feel him out as to the extent of this support, it would be to the tune of 100 gp for each party member...though you could pool that, if you agreed upon a big purchase. This is in terms of arms, supplies, goods, beasts, etc, not just cash...but he would agree that up to 200 gp could be in coin, for bribery purposes.

Saeros Silversword

Not used to such feasts in lofty company, Saeros is polite and respectful to all at the banquet, eating little , and drinking less. The Elf is quiet, listening rather than talking, but when the festivities are at a lull he rises from his seat.

He bows before the Castellan.
Thank you for the honor of your invitation. I swear to try and destroy what evil dwells in the Caves. I will do my part in trying to help this bastion of good flourish. The Ogre was a mighty foe, but there is greater evil alive still. I thank you for any aid you see fit to give us. What skill I have with sword and spell is at your service.

He then turns to the Guildmaster.
I pledge to do what I can to search for your missing friends. I shall bring them back if I can.

Saeros then nods respectfully and takes his seat.

Brother Henry - Priest

Henry does his best to be polite and quiet, and bows politely when introduced to those present, especially the ladies. He'll remain mostly quiet during the meal unless spoken to directly. He will take the opportunity to praise Kal and Kyle in front of the assemblage.

When Mother Camilla introduces him to Valentina, he smiles warmly and offers his hand. "It's my pleasure to meet you! We can sure use your assistance, for sure. I am at your service, and I'll come for you when we depart, which will hopefully be soon. Much evil to be cleansed, and all that."
Then with a flourish and his characteristic smile Henry says "Oh, where are my manners? Let me introduce you to our hearty band!" He'll introduce her to everyone saving Lardo for last. Pulling Lardo aside he motions toward our new priest and says "Lardo! This is Valentina! She will be aiding us in our quest!" He nods excitedly and says "This is my friend Lardo. He has been quite an aid in my quest to assist the downtrodden and be the bane of evil. And don't let his modest demeanor fool you, he's as capable an adventurer as you'll find, and most importantly, he's my best friend." Henry gives Lardo a bro hug and smiles like a yokel.

Henry will try to get just a quick handshake with the Castellan and his entourage, politely introducing himself and telling them what an honor it is to be of service to the Keep, and to assist those in need. He'll tell the Castellan that it's his goal to help rid the area of evil and assist those within the locale of his fair settlement.

When he hears of the missing people, Henry leaps to his feat (in his annoying boy scout fashion) and says "Of course we'll locate and bring these good folk home! We'll stop at nothing to see your colleagues returned!"

OOC: Henry will move that we leave at sunrise, once equipped. He reminds everyone of his sturdy donkey to help bear extra weight. We'll need some spikes, oil, and some holy water....

One last thing, during the course of his mingling, Henry will attempt to find the best person to ask about some enhanced armor for our party, even if it's just on loan.

Lardo is truly in his element at Sir Stephen's table — this sort of sumptuary excess is what he aspires to every night. He washes down heaping trenchers of venison, trout, and bread with the Castellan's wine, complimenting his patron effusively on each vintage.

When Henry introduces Valentina, he lazily wipes the grease from his mouth with his forearm, stands and bows deeply. "Charmed, milady." Then he emits a soft belch and returns to the feast. He keeps a discreet eye on Groening and his mistress, and wonders if the couple would be so foolish as to carry much wealth on their persons, and what might be the best method to relieve them of it. It's a train of thought that is interrupted by Sir Stephen's invitation to join him on the battlements.

He listens to the guildmaster's tale with a degree of circumspection. "We have it on good authority that the goblin clans feud constantly," he says, "so forgive me if I'm dubious of tales of them working in tandem. I mean no disrespect — we will return your man if he yet lives — but may I question this teamster myself?"
Failure is always an option.

Quick answer, from Master Greyson:

"Alas, the teamster has already left for a more southerly clime. His close brush with death made him reluctant to stay in these harsh borderlands. As to the possible alliance of goblins and hobgoblins, while you doubtless no more of their internecine habits, I can only say that war makes for strange bedfellows, and this goes for brigandry as well. It is not unknown for villains to put aside their petty feuds in the name of profit...and sometimes, an opportunity to betray a temporary ally."

Cormac the stoic at anyone's table that will allow him a seat quietly eats and drinks plenty of dark ale. Says not much at all unless specifically addressed which most don't talk to the "barbarian" as they've labelled him. Once finished with his dining goes outside for air enjoying less being inside castles, keeps and cities and more in the country as it is. Once summoned for the private conversation among himself and the other adventurers the proud warrior says very little other than "We shall rescue the captives such cowardly foes to attack and slaughter innocents on the road. Trust in me I will make the smelly creatures pay for it."

After saying that the man will remain almost statue like stoicly staring off into the distance while listening to what the others say in the conversation. Feeling ready to head off and kill some goblins and hobgoblins. The man says in a low stern tone "Violence begets violence. It's all the beasts understand."

Sham is out of place, much more comfortable in a tavern than a dining hall.
He'll chat and tell stories to any who will listen, but he will also keep his ears open for rumors involving these caves or the cult.

The guildmaster himself seems to be a resourceful man, and getting on good terms with the local merchants could have its benefits. "We would be glad to help. If your merchants are still alive, we'll find them and bring them back. Were there any clues about what valuables were taken? We might better identify their whereabouts if we come across items from the same caravan."

Eglistrum Paharis

The Mage accompanies the group to dinner, but he does his best to avoid speaking with anyone more than necessary. Uncomfortable in such an environment, Eglistrum actually turns in for the night early, completely missing the meeting with the Castellan.
