Ramona nods as she continues to eat, "I was born on a hab with a billion people and have lived out of a rucksack and a sewer pipe for the last nine years, any place with a matress and no one shooting at me is a step up."

She finishes placing her order for the dress on her tablet and puts it down.

"That's a nice ship," she says looking at the spinning schematic, "not sure about the name." Ramona takes another bit of her noodles, "I usually find that the simplest name is the correct one."

If you decide to stay with OP, you'll be eligible for the company housing, of course."
"Thanks GoGo, I'll take you up on the room." Jimi nods adding seriously and looking into his Captain's eyes, "Listen, is there anything we can do for you right now?"
She smiles sadly. "I'll be okay, Jimi. But it's nice to have family close."

I know that Ivan is an uplifted ape, but Jimi doesn't. He's heard of the Ursa (uplifted bears) and dolphins that were uplifted, but he's never heard of an uplifted ape. In fact, he may not even know what an ape is, and if he does he probably has a picture of a monkey in his mind, not a chimp, orangutan or gorilla. Hence Jimi is questioning whether Ivan is a human sub-specie like the Genoe...maybe...or with the fur and size maybe some strange variant of Vargr.

This rates a bit of a chuckle...

None taken, Jimi. I'm an Uplift. Back during the Interstellar Wars against the Vilani, the Terrans started several uplift projects, the logic being that they simply needed more bodies to fight an empire of thousands of worlds. The dolphins and Ursa are the most famous of them. And yes, they even tried an intelligent dog project, but that was quietly shut down after they met the Vargr. At any rate, the Uplifted Ape project turned out to be more complicated than they thought it would be. It wasn't until the Long Night that they finally completed it to their satisfaction. What you pronounced as 'upape' is actually Up-Ape, as in Uplifted Apes.
We were bred for heavy labor, so they changed our hips to enable us to walk upright and trans-genetically mixed some genes to make us able to speak but they kept the simian shoulder girdle and foot construct. That's why we have to have modified rifles... we can't put cheek to stock on human models. And obviously clothing is an issue.
As for our treatment, the Solomani don't treat ANY uplifted species as equal citizens. On most Solomani worlds, and certainly on all the high-tech ones, they have mandatory genetic testing to determine if any human has any Vilani genes. Those that do are considered subcitizens and are not given the rights of a 'pure' Solomani. With that kind of nonsense going on, you can imagine how badly they treat an uplifted race that they geneered themselves. UpApes and Ursa especially have it difficult because they believe that we retain an 'animal nature'. The humans have a subconscious fear that we might go berserk. Should an incident happen and the police are called the human is always right. And if we object, well, let's just say that very few Solomani police are investigated for shooting an Ape or Ursa. The Sollies feel that we should be grateful for the gift of intelligence and that we should 'know our place'... 'our place' being literally below any human of whatever ancestry. I'm not kidding when I say that the Solomani really do like their dogs better than their Uplifted furry so-called 'citizens', no matter what the Ministry of Genetics propagandists say.
And those attitudes have shown up even out here in the Deep every now and again. Among some people, when I'm not feared as a freak of nature, I'm perceived as only one step away from a pissed off Aslan male. I don't get offended at the ignorance, but I've learned to walk softly over the years.

"Wow!" Jimi raises his eyebrows, "I knew the Sollies did that with Ursa and Dolphins. I've met both, although only met an Ursa one time. The Ursa told me that he was an uplifted bear, didn't mean much to me, seeing as I'd never heard of a bear before. He seemed like a nice guy."

"So, they did this with other species, too?"
Jimi asks "Ape? I thought they were small, had tails and swung around in trees...no?"

"Oh, well, never mind! You look fine to me and so far I haven't seen any reason to treat you different from anyone else."
Jimi grins,"So, I won't. Fair enough?"

"Peacekeepers tried to change a lot of things about me, didn't work out so well in the end, reinforced a lot of bad habits and character traits." Ramona grins, "Try as they might they couldn't force a regulation hair cut on me once I got into the AO, it's shit under a helmet but it's me. Drove my CO bat crap crazy."

"I'm not the kid you used to babysit Gogo, if I was bad to be around then, I'm worse now. Nine years in the AO changes a person and never in a good way." She sighs and pushes her chair back, "I appreciate the offer, not sure I make the best company."

Go-Go smiles a bit. "You're still 'family', Ramona. And you weren't that bad as a kid. Even though you rigged my closet door to spray itching powder on me that one time. And yes, I do remember that. You just marched to a different drummer. Had the Peacekeepers paid attention to that, they might have come up with a way for both of you to prosper. But the military mindset... Now you know why I signed on with Carrillines."

"I'll take a suite too, and a conference room if you have one available.." Aadam said as the Occam's Razor model began to form up better, close to what the actual ship was like..

He glanced over at Ivan, taking it in stride. "I shipped on two scouts that had uplift apes, Mr. Ivan, they were great crew, they really busted ass. Gunter was a good friend of mine. Ive been all over. Shipped with all kinds of people." Aadam put a fist up showing his support.

continuing to eat and work, and saying to no one in particular, but kind of to gogo and Ramona..

"I'm all for special handling, all kinds of jobs... this thing with all these peds, hot racking and booting up on fast drug... we should make them flip for some med robots to monitor this. we're going to be up to our armpits in crotch crickets, Dallan knows what. Life support is going to be taxed, but as it stands we got no way to screen the peds before they get in our life support envelope. Im all for playin it fast and loose, but we're takin a big gamble. I dont say we go at the peds all hard with santizer and scrub brushes, but well need a boarding protocol in place, sooner than later."

"We should also make them flip for extra rations, sundries, since its people. Why not? keep em fat on grub and movies and pillows and out from under foot..."
