Thanks, Nordbo!

That makes sense. I don't think it's a coincidence that the OSR happened after the advent of online playing.

Sorry Shaede, for the hijack. As you can see, we're old but passionate. :)

Hijack away! Ha. It’s great to see the discussion. For me, 5e was the only option because I sold ALL my 2e stuff 20 years ago. It’s sad because I had every book and many campaigns. So, when trying to pick it back up, I think it’s natural to start with the latest rule set. Online live and F2F just aren’t conducive to the family time. There just seem to be a lot more options and tools available for 5e. I wouldn’t even know where to start trying to get back into 2e. I skipped 3&3.5 entirely.

In that case.... ;)

The Purple Worm website is a great 2e resource. You can also pick up the official PDFs online for relatively little money on DriveThurRPG or one of its partner sites:
As a side note, I actually got my first taste with 2e almost five years ago now on this site, with this game: Tavern Tales.
I really miss Castien Larenthalryl, my mage with a 4 constitution. :(

Welcome aboard! I've mentioned before that I have played far more AD&D 1E than any other system, but I LOVE 5E. I think it is really well put together, and the advantage/ disadvantage is a slick mechanic. For my home game, I have picked up a bunch of unofficial classes and races online and added them to the potential mix. Some are somewhat uninteresting, but there are some really cool ideas out there.
Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

It'll probably make sense to see how much work needs to go into running them before I get too excited, but these look like they could be fun.

Only option??

I suppose if you don't like using free retro-clones like Delving Deeper (OD&D Rules), Labyrinth Lords (D&D Basic/Expert Moldvay/Cook Rules), or OSRIC (AD&D 1e Rules).

But who wants to play any of those, amiright?

Ugh.

Dave, I think you're going to really struggle with the Grand Canyon-like gap of power between 1e and 5e. I've listened to quite a few live play pod casts and almost all of them played lower levels where all players basically advanced after every adventure. It was consistent enough that I wondered if it was something discussed in the rules.

Anyway, Shaede, if you ever decide to go OSR, you can find plenty of games here in the original or clone rules and you'd always be welcome.

Otherwise, you boys have fun with your 5e!

Fixed that for you, Inferno.

(To be clear, I pretty much exclusively play retro clones. OSR FTW.)

I have no doubt you're right. I'm preparing myself for it.

Interestingly enough, I just read the first few pages of 'Hoard of the Dragon Queen' and, in the 'Character Advancement' section, a "milestone experience rule" is mentioned:

So, yes, apparently advancing after every adventure is a thing. I'm not sure if it's a thing I'm going to follow, but maybe?

I'm looking forward to it!

Ah, yes, that sounds about right. I mean, it sounds completely wrong to me; but that sounds like what they were doing. To each their own!

I have no doubt you will have fun, regardless! But Imma get back to my OSR now. ;)

Cheers,

Al

I am pretty confident that there is a choice to utilize experience milestones or just typical XP progression. From what I have seen, most people prefer the old way of doing things, and that is available in 5e.

Welcome, brother. I also play 5e on fantasy grounds...I love the mechanics too, plus playing a caster is more survivable too...lol. There you will find him: "His illustrious magus extraordinaire "Sebastian, Quill Bermitious the III"
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers"
