Eris wrote: John Lee finds a hole in the canopy and lowers the grav craft straight down then to the left into open space between the large trees that rise up from the forest floor. He has to maneuver through 3 successively thin canopies before he reaches the dark forest floor. It is twilight, you don't quite need to turn on your lights.

The trunks rise like columns supporting the dark green roof over your heads. They are spaced a good 6 to 10 meters apart. There are mounds and pits on the forest floor as well as a few splintered stumps rising as much as 20 meters high. At first there seems to be almost no undergrowth down here, but as you eyes adjust you see faintly glowing patches of light: green, dark orange and a rusty red where various fungi and molds are decaying the plentiful organic matter.

The wind screen of the grav craft is getting wet from the constant drips coming from the thick leaves overhead that have trapped much of the torrential rains that must sweep over this forest.

There are no radar signatures or visible sightings of large animals. However, you can see insects as large as a big bird fluttering among the trees. Occasionally, you see an actual bird like creature swoop from the canopy and snap up one of the insects.

You can move ahead, but only at what would be a walking pace as you weave around and up and down through this strange world. You note that the tree trunks spread at ground level so you couldn't put down to the surface if you wanted to.

John Lee sees movement along one of the trunks near the surface. It comes into focus as he passes near that trunk. It's a serpent of some type, 30 cm in diameter and probably 6 meters long as it wraps around the huge tree trunk. It seems unaware of you as it is intent what looks like a meter diameter ball down on the surface. The ball unfolds and six legs emerge as the creature scuttles off and around a nearby tree trunk.

John Lee is concentrating on flying and only vaguely hears Sigrun talking beside him. Sigrun is keeping an eye out for that radar signal, but down here it is completely blocked. Of course, that means there is no way it could pick up you down here. There is no radio reception down here either, but comparing the craft's inertial location against the map on her screen Sigrun thinks they are about 4 klicks from where that radar was located. There should be a swampy area just ahead and to the left, and then the map shows the forest ends in a sandy beach fronting the bay to the south.

The light is getting better as the forest thins and John Lee moves the craft out and under an overhanging canopy of trees. There are wet lands of grasses ahead of him and what looks like solid land to his left, beyond the swamp. The radar signal is further to the left...south west...about 1 klick away.
John Lee shuts the engines down and locks the controls. "Now we hike, " he says with a sigh. He unlocked his gun cases and checks and loads his weapons. He digs googles and a boonie hat out of his backpack before putting it on.

Sigrun shoulders her knapsack and shrugs into a bandolier stuffed with rifle magazines. Hefting her rifle she looks at the terrain ahead and says “The grassland looks a bit too open. We can get to where we want to be by using the edge of the swamp both as a guide and for cover”.

John Lee grounded the craft under the shade of palm trees overhanging a sandy patch. There is a dune south of the craft hiding it from spying eyes in that direction. I should be safe enough here unless someone happens across it on the ground.

The lay of the land will allow you to skirt along the edge of the forest keeping out of the swamp and off the grassland. There are low rolling dunes running mostly east and west here at the edge of the forest. The dunes are covered with grass, bushes and low wind tortured trees. They should provide a good bit of cover, both for you, but also for any patrols that might be about...

Image
A few hundred meters brings you to that road you had seen going through the forest. There is a locked gate across the road and a four meter tall chain link fence running from both sides of the gate.
Image
The fence runs between the dunes with the top just above the top of the dune you are behind. You don't see anyone at the gate, but from the road and area around the gate it is being actively used.

If you climb up the side of the dune you should be able to see over the fence into the area behind it...

“This road’s no good for us but since we are here I’m going to get a look inside”. Sigrun will grab up some of the local grass to use as improvised camouflage for her helmet and shoulders and will then crawl up the side of the dune furthest away from the gate and, whilst still lying prone, will take look over the fence. While she works she will be listening hard for any sign of approaching vehicle traffic or foot patrol.

Sigrun and John Lee peek over the top of the dune. In the distance they can see the glittering water of the bay. Nearer they can see what looks like an abandoned airbase.

Through binoculars you can see two large tent like structures covering what appear to be a pair of space ships. One appears to be about 200 dtons and the other about twice that. The tenting probably provides a good camouflage from the air. As you watch you see three armed men escorting a man and a woman from the smaller ship to the larger one. The two unarmed people are wearing gray coveralls with large POW printed in bright yellow on their backs.

“Ja!” Sigrun’s exclamation is no less emphatic for being whispered. “Well, here are the Luzan and their prisoners” her gaze remains fixed through the scope of her rifle as a smile plays about her lips “Mr Petamore, I can barely see your 200 ton prize vessel for the bulk of mine - I’ll see if I can make out any ID codes or markings".

Sigrun will carefully observe the scene before her. Her first instinct is to try to get a look at the male prisoner’s features to see if he is Lord William. Thereafter she studies the guards noting their weapons and any visible body armour worn but more importantly their demeanour and discipline. Taking a more general view of the airbase she will attempt to spot any sentry posts, guard accommodation or weapon emplacements as well as trying to determine the numbers of troops present and the scale of the operation.

She will pool her commerce raider's knowledge of Imperial starships with that of John Lee and attempt to determine the make and type of the two vessels.

She glances across at John Lee and calmly asks “How far should we push our luck?”

Sigrun carefully sets her rifle down and examines the space ships using her helmet’s IR vision. She will use her knowledge of ship operation to check vents and ports on both ships’ hulls for heat blooms that would indicate the vessels are internally “active”. Whilst so doing she also looks for other external clues that may indicate the ships' level of preparedness: the presence of fuel lines, "Remove before Flight" tags, signs of replenishment activity, etc.

If any of her scanning equipment is capable of data capture she will store images of what she and John Lee observe.

I'm hoping to hear from John Lee, too!
Sigrun can tell that both ship's power plants are active and generating power.

There is a hole in the hull of the smaller ship where a turret would go. The turret is sitting on the tarmac next to the ship. There is what looks like the guts to a laser next to the turret. You'd say the laser was being installed in the turret and then the turret would be installed into the ship's hard point.

The larger ship actually looks nearly ready to fly. There are three tanker trucks parked next to it. One is actively pumping fuel aboard. You can tell that by the wisps of condensation rising up from around the intake port on the ship.

You would look longer, but you see a jeep with 4 armed guards driving along the tarmac coming across about halfway between your position and the camouflaged ships.

John Lee hears the sounds of internal combustion engines from behind him, somewhere up the road. Where you are you are shielded from the road, but can peek up over the dune and see a small convey of vehicles coming down the road. There is a jeep with 3 armed men and a driver followed by a pair of delivery vans. Behind the delivery vans are a pair of pickup trucks with what look like 50 caliber machine guns mounted in their beds. The guns are manned, but the gunners are mostly looking skyward and not down among the dunes.

If Sigrun stays with her head exposed above the dune, she runs the risk of being seen by the men in the convey. Probably not a big risk as they don't appear to be looking for trouble, but still a risk.

Sigrun warns John Lee “We’ve used up our luck. Get ready to move out!”

She recognises a pirate base when she sees one and also knows that they are vulnerable through whoever is providing logistical support to their operation. Relying on her improvised camo and fieldcraft skills to remain undetected she continues to observe the convoy attempting to record any identifying features (index plates/tag nos, company livery/contact details) on the civilian service vehicles apparently facilitating the Luzan operation.

(OOC: Well, I really hope John Lee pitches in too! However, you are entirely right to move us along lest the campaign wither on the vine. FWIW I am happy to post at a much quicker rate than currently).

Edward strolls over toward where Joxe and Carlos are looking at magazines.

Seeing the open magazine with the picture of that politician the librarian says, "Luzon Stooge! And the government is no better, letting those terrorists run wild south of here, doing nothing about it."

He then clamps his mouth shut and then quickly adds, "But I didn't say that."

It is somewhat surprising, but the men in the jeep are wearing what appear to be military uniforms. You'll have to check, but you'd bet they were actual government issue. The rest are in civilian clothing and the vans and pickup truck are civilian.

The convoy stops at the gate and one of the jeep riders jumps down to open it. It wasn't locked or guarded. He waits to close the gate as the convoy drives through then jogs forward to rejoin the jeep. The convoy continues out of site through some trees only to reappear on the tarmac driving up to the ships.

It's time to go...

Carefully, John Lee and Sigrun retreat back to their vehicle. They get there without incident and are soon winding their way back through the trees away from the base and back toward the border of the hunting preserve.

Sigrun voices her thoughts on the route back “Let’s check back out through the ranger station and then get back to the yacht. I thought that was a pirate base with slack security but I was wrong - they are privateers!” She explains what she believes to be a vital difference “State sponsored pirates - kept covertly so they are deniable. Their security is lax because they believe that the entire Ruian army will protect them!” Then, deftly unloading rifle magazines as her mind weighs military risk and reward, she goes quiet for a while.

She breaks her silence with a predatory smile and adds “At this point in the mission, as professional mercenaries, we ensure our contract includes retaining the rights to those prize vessels. Let’s get back to the ship”.

"Yes, please do." Edwardo adds.
The librarian leans in and says quietly, "The Luzon were terrorists before the recent war. They still are, but during the war the government, most of the governments on Ruie, pardoned any of them that pledged to support the war effort. They all did and several of their more acceptable leaders actually got into political positions. Now that the war is over they are back to their old ways in some areas and subverting governments in others...like here, say some people."

He adds grimly, "It wouldn't do for a employee of the government to say the government has been suborned, and so I'm *not* going to say that. All I'll say is don't expect any help from the police or the army if you tangle with Luzon. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, Imperials probably need to stay away from Ruie entirely until we sort all of our local problems out."
