OOC: My internet was down all day yesterday. My understanding is that some construction in Georgia severed fiber and put most of FL, GA, and AL offline. Why it took them all day to get it fixed, I don't know, but it did.

You drive the car up to one of the smaller ships and get out. Smaller is only relative as you judge this hulk to be about 400 dtons all told. The larger ship across the road is at least three times larger.

Looking around, you don't see any security cameras mounted anywhere, nor is there evidence of any drones or other security measures. It could be that the entire security is the badges you were issued. Of course, there really isn't all that much in here worth stealing and it couldn't be sneaked out if you are checked on exit from the Yard.

There are weeds growing all around the hunk and several shrubs and small trees dot the landscape. Beyond the smaller ship you spy a pond of water with oily scum shimmering on its surface. Almost the only sounds you hear are bird calls and the wind whispering through the nearby trees. Off in the distance, you do hear what sounds like cutting metal and revving motors. So, you aren't alone in here, there is some work going on, but it isn't in this area.

What do you do now?

Edwardo and Pedro (and Carlos?) walk up to the smaller ship. As they draw near it looms over their heads. There is a red box on the side of the ship next to a hatch. The red box looks out of place and when they get there they discover it contains plastisheets with information about the ship.
  • The ship is named Head Band it left the Glisten shipyards in 1012 (it is 1085 now).

Zaki crosses the road and walks up a dirt path to the very large ship. The area around the ship is overgrown with tall grasses and shrubs. Normally the ship would be held up on landing struts, but they have collasped. Zaki can see where the ship has settled on top of several small trees, crushing them. It appears to be tilted to the side by a few degrees, not enough to be a problem, but certainly not level.

A red box is on the side of the ship next to a gaping hole where a hatch should be. The red box has writing on it..."Entrance Forbidden without special permission!". The box itself is empty.

Looking into the gaping hole in the side of the ship, Zaki can see there is no inner hatch either and that anyone can walk right into the lower deck of the ship. Looking down she sees that dirt and sand has blown up into the airlock. She can see animal tracks in the dry dirt. She has no idea what sort of animals they represent, but one set of tracks is pretty big, about 3 inches across and 3 inches long with four toe imprints and a pad imprint behind them.

It looks dark inside. Zaki is going to need a torch or light of some kind.

Zaki keys up the low light camera feature on her hand comp, and shunts the feed to her holo display. She also activates the inertial tracking system, so she can tell how far she's moved inside the ship. Carefully, she makes her way through the airlock, and into the ship. Once aboard, she compares the ship's layout to the schematic to determine which way she needs to go. She keeps her sidearm holstered for the moment.

Zaki moves inside the ship. She is in what would have been an air lock, but is not just a short corridor with two holes where hatches would have been. Once through to the inner corridor she scans both directions. Looking at the the schematic she has, she turns to the right and goes down the corridor. Her footsteps echo hollowly in the empty ship. She takes a left and then another right where she reaches the lifts that will take her up to the second deck where her target is located.

The door will only open manually as the power seems to be off. Opening a small door on the hatch Edwardo finds a metal wheel. Turning the wheel should unseal the hatch and allow it to be opened.

And it does...

Looking through the now open hatch Edwardo and Pedro see another door about 2 meters in. This door is already open. However, little more can be seen as the lights are off and it is as dark as a tomb inside the ship.

Zaki considers the ladder, and then sees that she cannot control her camera with one hand, and climb the ladder with the other. She'd be working blind, and she was no engineer. There should be manual hatches and ladders between decks, she thinks. She studies the schematic to see if there is another way to go up to the second deck.

There are other ways, but as Zaki goes to each she discovers none of the lifts are in operation. She is going to have to climb a ladder to get to the second deck. During her tour around the lower deck looking for ways to get up to the next deck she has a nagging feeling that she is being watched, or followed, but she neither sees nor hears anything. It's just a feeling.

She remembers the pawprints at the airlock, and she reaches her concealed pistol to be sure that her blouse is loose enough to pull it up and draw from the IWB holster. She studies the ladder and the overhead hatch from below to see if she can figure out how to open it. She will have to do it blind, since she isn't about to risk dropping the handcomp down the lift shaft.

Edwardo activates the flashlight feature on his comm before moving forward, slowly. The plastisheet has most of the information they need, just killing time at this point. "Seems to be in OK condition, given it's age." he comments.

There is a hand crank attached to the wall just below the overhead hatch. It looks like it can be turned. The hatch appears to be an iris type hatch, so the hand crank should only turn one way to wind it open and the other way to wind it closed. It should be workable with one hand and the other holding onto the rungs of the ladder. There is enough room between the rungs of the ladder and the wall for you to get your entire arm through to secure yourself if you want to.

Edwardo disappears into the ship. The corridor is dark, but there is a very dimly lighted panel just inside the air lock. Edwardo can make out flat panel buttons on it, one labeled "Lights".

Zaki has a bad moment as her foot slips on one of the rungs, but she regains her footing after an unpleasant second. Feeling around for the crank, she takes hold and turns. Somewhat to her surprise it turns easily and the iris above her head begins to open. A beam of light comes down through the slowly opening hatch. The light is from a missing section of hull on the deck above her and somewhere off to her left. It is enough to make it much easier to move around.

She climbs the remaining rungs and looks over the ledge at the middle deck. The light is really fairly dim now that her eyes have adjusted, but it is bright enough to let her see without needing a torch. Looking left she can see where the corridor turns to the right 30 feet away. The light is coming from that area. To her right the corridor continues 30 or 40 feet ending at a closed hatch.

The schematic she has indicates she need to go right on this deck, past the closed hatch in this corridor. The room she wants is just beyond that hatch and to the right.
