Ok, Str 8 Dex 7 End 11 Int 10 Edu 4 Soc 7
Enlist Navy (8+1) Survive (9+2) Commission (9 no) Two rolls on the Advanced Education Table - Engineering-2
Re-enlist (9) Survive (7+1) Commission (11) Promotion (11 Lieutenant) 1 roll of Service Skills Dagger-1, 2 rolls on Advanced Education Mechanic-1, Gunnery-1
Re-enlist (5)
Lieutenant Chandra Gupta Age 26 Navy 2 Terms 87BA47 Engineering-2, Dagger-1, Mechanic-1, Gunnery-1
I wasn't clear what you meant about mustering out, he gets 3 rolls...
10 kcr, High Passage, +1 Intel
Not quite what I was hoping for, hoped for at least one more term and get Vacc Suit and Electronics and maybe luck out with J-o-T, but a solid character.
Final stats:
Lieutenant Chandra Gupta Age 26 Navy 2 Terms 87BB47 Engineering-2, Dagger-1, Mechanic-1, Gunnery-1, Electronic-0, Gravitics-0, Vacc-Suit-0, Zero-G-Combat-0, 10 kcr, High Passage

Three rolls for benefits are fine. I just didn't want anyone to have more than 4 terms at the start for this game. You have Vacc Suit and Electronics at 0...as well as Gravitics and Zero G, due to Chandra's other skills and career, not super, but gets you past the -DM's.

Should I purchase equipment? Any restrictions on such? What sorts of stuff is available beyond Book 1 and Book 3 (or The Traveller Book)?

All Book 1-3 and/or The Traveller Book equipment is available. From Book 4 personal weaponry exists, but is hard/impossible to acquire.
You can refer to
http://juliahwest.com/Traveller/Peter_V ... p_list.pdf, but items there must be run past me before you can buy them. All these items are subject to me deciding how they work and what they cost. Items from TL's higher than the world you're on will be very, very, rare and much more expensive.

There will be vacc suits aboard the yacht, so you don't need to buy one now. You might want to buy one later, though.
At the moment, armor, weapons and personal gear...maybe a hand computer and comm unit...is all you really need to buy.

Ok, then he shouldn't have to sell that High Passage right away...

Rolled up with the Cepheus engine:
Joe Whistler (286997), Scout (Streetwise 0, Computer 0, Life Sciences 0, Space Sciences 0, Comms 0, Electronics 0, Gun Combat 0, Gunnery 0, Recon 0, Piloting 1, JOAT 0, Advocate 0. Possessions: 5000 ImpCr

Based on what I'm seeing in the other thread, you could really use someone with more engineering or gun skills than Joe; I'm happy to re-roll if you like. Frankly I will happily sit down and make a few characters just to play the creation mini-game so it's no problem
Edit: Or I could just swap my background Life Sciences for Engineering 0 and my term-2 rolled Advocate 0 for Engineering 1?

I'm pretty sure Frank's character has Engineering covered. Since we're in the same time zone please feel free to PM me I'm happy to help.

Okay, I'm going to re-roll him using the roller, which I *think* I've got the basics of, and hope for something more gun-ny.
One question: Can we assign rolls to characteristics freely, or do we just take them as they come?
Edit: roller doesn't work. "Microsoft Cursor Engine error '80004005'
Data provider or other service returned an E_FAIL status.
/default.asp, line 474". FFS.
Edit 2: Apparently it chokes on doing a bunch of rolls at once. Can't say I'm impressed, but anyway:
STR [2d6] = 7. DEX [2d6] = 11. END [2d6] = 8.
INT [2d6] = 3. EDU [2d6] = 7. SOC [2d6] = 8.
Definitely a Jayne! Background skills Survival 0, Mechanics 0.
Joining the army, +1 from high DEX [2d6+1] = 7+1 = 8

Okay, so Army. Are we using CT, or Mongoose 1e/Cepheus? The Service skills (for Basic Training) are very different; don't like the look of the CT ones much at all (ATV and Air/Raft as separate skills), and Gun Combat is in their twice - so would he pick it up at level 0 or 1?

A fine set of rolls! Go Team Gun Bunny!
I'm cheering you on from the sidelines here (but have been plagued with login/out issues all morning and had trouble seeing your posts ...)
I believe the choice is yours either the black books or Cepheus. If you are after a military skill set I think the very handy Book 4 (Mercenary) was offered too ...
I may have misunderstood but if you are looking at the Book 1 Service skills table (p.11) a skill roll on that table of 5 or 6 gets you Gun Cbt 1.

I'm guessing that means you only get 5 skills at 0 from basic training, though?

Ah with you now!
So I'd say yes just five at 0 - but if you use Cepheus "Surface Defense" career (plantetary army) you'd get Mechanic, Gun Cbt, Gunnery, Melee, Recon and Battle Dress Service skills in Basic training.
Edit/Stop Press: You'd also get Gun Cbt 1 on entry (skills with rank) as a private.

Skills start at 1 with CT, not 0. In CT you get *every* standard weapon skill at a default of 0, so every Gun Combat skill moves the PC up to 1, then 2, and so on. Thing is, if you get Gun Combat, you need to pick a specific weapon each time: so Pistol-2 or Rifle-1, etc.
In fact, if you're not really into playing the mini-game of PC creation, just use
http://devilghost.com/software/travellercharacter/ and keep hitting F5 until you get a PC you like. I've been know to hit that F5 a hundred times or more just to look at the characters that come up.
Kieran, I don't have a problem if you want to do an Engineering type, but we *could* use a Marine or another Army combat guy. Even more, the party could probably really use someone with the Gunnery skill...not right now, but eventually when they get a ship of their own.

Surface Defence looks great actually - I managed to miss that entirely! - so I'll stick with Cepheus.
So, basic training + Private rank: Mechanic-0, Gun Combat-1, Gunnery-0, Melee Combat-0, Recon-0, Battle Dress-0.
As I know I'm going that route, I'll be cheeky and change my background skills to Streetwise-0 (have randomly picked Tahaver as homeworld) and Carousing-0.
Survival term 1: [2d6] = 8
Commission - [2d6] = 5 - nope!
Term 2 re-enlistment [2d6] = 5
Term 2 skill (Service Skills) [1d6] = 6, survival [2d6] = 5
Gain Battle Dress 1, just survive the term...
Term 2 commission? [2d6] = 9 Re-enlistment for term 3 [2d6] = 11
Make Lieutenant.
Term 3 skill (personal development) [1d6] = 3, survival [2d6] = 8
+1 END
term 3 advancement [2d6] = 9, re-enlistment for term 4 [2d6] = 3
Make Captain, fail to re-enlist which I forgot we weren't doing anyway.
