As Carlos appears he sees Sigrun snatch up a dataslate and use it to check her appearance - odd. Whatever her concern she appears satisfied by a quick glance and smiles at him as he comes in – which might be either reassuring or not.

Unusually she doesn’t appear to be armed, her eyes are slightly red and she’s wearing her blond hair loose and … “girly”. She seems to have softened her look so now looks “pretty” rather than “striking” and seems a lot less edgy than usual.

She says “Daibei is a long haul. You either need to get a bigger ship or to make enough money here to go back cold”.

She looks suspiciously at her coffee when Carlos mentions its Imperial Navy flavour.

She glances across at Zaki until she catches her eye and then, deadpan, turns to Carlos and asks innocently “Are you rated for combat operations in zero gravity?”

With a wicked glint in her eye she watches Zaki for any reaction and then casually continues “I’d like to do some EVA as we come into dock – an old tradition”.

(OOC: I stand corrected. You are absolutely right - there is indeed an almost direct J4 route via Chandler Station, Usher! I just took the published route through the Hierate as the answer. Doh! :) ).

Carlos says, "That's the plan. A Jump 3 boat with drop tanks would work. There's a route across the Rift through the Islands Subsectors that looks doable, but the boat would need to be in milspec condition on the start. Gets us back to Daibei in a year or so, and keeps us out of the Hierate. I could probably survive the Hierate route solo, I've a bit of experience in their space, but I wouldn't want to take somebody from the Core Worlds through it. WAY too easy for humans to get into deep drakh there. The 'cold' route? No thanks, I spent a year and a half in the freezer, it'd take at least three to get back. I just don't trust civvie freezers that much. You interested in coming with when we get ready to try it? It'll be awhile..."

Carlos stirs some sweetener into the kaff to try to do something with the flavor. He then turns back and says, "Um, I was Imperial Scouts. We're not supposed to be seen. Just in, peek about, and get the zark out, toot sweet, on the bounce, one piece. You dust up, you did it wrong. Do it wrong, you don't come back."

I looked at the 'hardcore' route, through the Islands subsectors.
Sigrun thinks for a moment and adds “I was heading to Fulacin in Rhylanor - so I’ll go that far!” She smiles then ponders more “The ship you really need is native to the Marches – an Imperial Gazelle Class close escort, four hundred tons including one hundred ton drop tanks. Jump four, five if you drop the tanks, small crew, next to no cargo. Now, the Imperial Navy don’t share - but I’m sure we could work something out ... If we get one of those I’ll ride it with you to Daibei and buy your shares off you on arrival. However, first we’ll need to “liberate” a few more ships like this one as finance. We did leave those two contacts behind on Ruie".

She further muses “I’ve not dealt with Aslan but I know a little about Vargr … and Zhodani. Why can I never bring them to mind?” She looks momentarily distracted and then smiles “More crazy Out World folk with strange traditions like running around the outside of the ship after a successful raid. It’s bad luck not to do it. It’s … ungrateful”.

Even forewarned Sigrun has trouble suppressing her delighted laughter at Zaki’s reaction and barely avoids inhaling her own drink. After a careful breath she replies “I’ve never had any issue with the Scout Service” but then furrows her brow “Apart from that they still owe me beer – I plan to hold you and Mr. Petamore liable for that debt on Regina”.

Chandlers Station is the one of the way points for the Islands route.

Sigrun returns a warm smile “I look forward to it!”

She continues “I do plan to "run the ship" as we come in. Anyone crazy enough is welcome to join me!”

She breaks into a bright joyful grin “It will be fun!”

She will ensure her EVA gear is ready for when the trader drops out of jump. If the ship is granted access to docking facilities she does indeed plan to parkour her way around the perimeter of the ship as it docks. She recommends that anyone joining her has the relevant skills (vacc suit and zero g cbt – Sigrun has both). She will be suitably impressed by any who volunteer to have a go without these skills!

[NB Sigrun’s personal reasons for wanting to do perform this stunt go beyond ancient custom. This is a uniquely Sword World tradition and any Sword Worlder seeing it will recognise it for what it is - both a proud victory celebration and also, when performed in the dock of the seat of Imperial power in the Marches, a bright spark of Out World defiance.

Regardless of the above Sigrun’s amazonian physique sheathed in the tailoring of her high tech vacc suit will no doubt also give the display a certain appeal on a more basic level well beyond political considerations! ;) :) ]

Carlos looks a bit lost. Obviously, something is going on here, but he hasn't a clue. "Er, yes. Many beers."

So, ref, can we FINALLY get to Regina? Or wherever the dice REALLY take us to?

With a full week in jump space, unless something goes wrong, no one is rushing, but eventually you get around to dealing with the ship's Transponder.

Turning it on from the controls on the bridge does nothing. Running a diagnostic returns a host of errors, but the root of them is that the Transponder isn't hooked into the ship's system's at all.

There's nothing for it but to go in the Avionic's crawlspaces and try to get down to the physical location of the Transponder and try to find out what's wrong. Transponders on civilian ships are almost always buried deep inside and behind other controls just to make it very hard to mess with them. To get to the physical Transponder you'll have to disable and remove the inertial damper controls (which shouldn't be a problem while in jump space) and disconnect the buss suppying electricity to cargo hold and half of the living area (the crew quarters).

Once you get to it you'll find an empty hole where a Transponder should be located!

Sigrun lets out an exultant whoop “Salvage!” she grins “Now, even in the Imperium, surely this prize hull can only belong to us?”

After a little further thought she adds “Well, perhaps that explains why the rest of the “Luzon Navy” weren’t “squawking” their transponders as they chased us out of the Ruie system. I wonder where these ships’ transponders are really being used”.

As her thoughts run on she continues “We will, of course, want to explain this situation very carefully at Regina”. Struck by a moment of realisation she quickly adds “In fact, I believe we will need to put out an immediate distress call on arrival” she looks at Edwardo “and please be very convincing”.

She paces, muttering to herself in Old Norse, and then shakes her head before frustratedly raking her fingers back through her blond locks with an exasperated sigh. She turns to her crewmates and explains her concern. “Regina is the sector capital and a fleet HQ - they will receive and review Naval Intel from all along the border. Coasting into weapons range of a port with wild tales of transponder failure might just be the sort of thing they might now be very sensitive to … ah ... probably. Actually ... very probably“.

Sigrun listens carefully to her comrades’ input and adds “I agree. Provided the Imperial Navy aren’t too twitchy we should be alright. When we exit jump let’s decelerate and not vector directly for the port. Not hiding - just not threatening. Meanwhile on comms, as well as every other emergency in the book, we declare "no transponder" to Regina control and give them active scanners or radio transmission to lock onto instead. We give them no cause to engage us before we can get our story verified by the Old Dream".

"Demanding to be boarded and declaring that we have wounded Imperial POWs on board should surely stay their hand. Once they have boarded us we can hand the seized gas over into their custody. From memory 1st Fleet at Regina are fairly straight up - it’s the 213th out of Lunion that are all saurigr skítkarlnir”.

The last appears to be Sigrun's personal opinion.

As the ship is proceeding through jump space an alarm on the bridge goes off!

When you rush to the controls you see a strange image on the screen... It looks like a snow sleigh pulled by eight tiny animals each with four legs and branching horns on their heads.

As the image slowly disappears a message comes in over the radio,"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!"

Was it real or did you dream it? You'll never know...

ps.
Merry Christmas from me and the game will get going again in a day or two.
